What Are the 8 Types of Learning Disabilities?

There is no single official medical list of exactly eight learning disabilities. However, educators and disability organizations commonly reference eight distinct types that affect how people read, write, do math, process information, and coordinate movement. These are: dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, auditory processing disorder, language processing disorder, nonverbal learning disability, visual perceptual/visual motor deficit, and ADHD (which is technically a separate condition but frequently grouped with learning disabilities because of its direct impact on learning).

Each of these affects a different aspect of how the brain takes in, organizes, or expresses information. Understanding which type is at play matters because the strategies that help one type can be useless, or even frustrating, for another.

How Learning Disabilities Are Defined

Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), a specific learning disability is “a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, that may manifest itself in the imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or to do mathematical calculations.” That definition is broad on purpose: it covers a range of conditions rather than naming a fixed number.

The DSM-5-TR, the diagnostic manual used by psychologists and psychiatrists, takes a slightly different approach. It uses a single diagnosis called “specific learning disorder” and adds specifiers for reading, writing, or math. The eight types you see listed on educational websites are a practical way of breaking that broad umbrella into more specific, recognizable patterns. These are neurodevelopmental conditions, meaning they stem from differences in how the brain is wired, not from laziness, low intelligence, or poor teaching.

To qualify for a diagnosis, a person needs to show difficulties that persist for at least six months despite targeted help, and their academic skills must fall substantially below what is expected for their age. The difficulties also cannot be better explained by vision or hearing problems, intellectual disability, or lack of access to instruction.

1. Dyslexia (Reading)

Dyslexia is the most widely recognized learning disability. It affects how the brain connects written letters to the sounds they represent, making reading slow, effortful, and error-prone. Children with dyslexia often struggle to break spoken words into syllables, recognize rhyming patterns, or decode unfamiliar words. Because reading never becomes automatic, comprehension suffers too: so much mental energy goes into figuring out individual words that the meaning of the sentence gets lost.

Dyslexia also affects spelling and written accuracy. Adolescents and adults with dyslexia tend to avoid reading whenever they can, skipping instructions, avoiding reading for pleasure, and finding workarounds that mask the difficulty. Assistive technology helps significantly here. Software that reads text aloud, audiobooks, and optical character recognition programs that convert printed pages into speech output allow people with dyslexia to access the same content without relying entirely on decoding skills.

2. Dysgraphia (Writing)

Dysgraphia affects the physical act of writing, whether by hand or on a keyboard. It can stem from motor coordination problems, spatial awareness difficulties, or the effects of dyslexia spilling over into written expression. Children with dysgraphia focus so much mental energy on the mechanics of forming letters and words that their ability to think about and convey ideas takes a hit. Their writing may look messy or inconsistent, but the core issue is not carelessness. Their brains are working overtime just to get words onto the page.

Word processing software with spell-check, grammar tools, and word prediction can make a substantial difference. So can allowing students to demonstrate knowledge through oral presentations or recorded responses instead of written exams.

3. Dyscalculia (Math)

Dyscalculia is a learning disability specific to math. It affects the ability to understand quantities, compare sizes (bigger vs. smaller), grasp math symbols, and apply concepts to solve problems. A student with dyscalculia might understand a math rule when it is explained but be unable to use it in a new context. The difficulty is not about effort; it is about how the brain processes numerical relationships.

Dyscalculia often shows up as trouble with everyday tasks too, like estimating time, handling money, or reading analog clocks. Visual aids, manipulatives (physical objects used to represent numbers), and breaking problems into smaller steps are common strategies.

4. Auditory Processing Disorder

Auditory processing disorder (APD) affects how the brain interprets sounds, not how the ears detect them. A child with APD passes a hearing test but struggles to distinguish between similar-sounding words, follow spoken directions in a noisy room, or keep up with fast-paced verbal instructions. The sounds arrive fine; the brain just has trouble sorting and making sense of them quickly enough.

Accommodations that help include recorded class sessions, written instructions to supplement verbal ones, preferential seating near the teacher, and quiet testing environments that reduce background noise.

5. Language Processing Disorder

Language processing disorder is a specific type of auditory processing difficulty that targets language. While APD affects the interpretation of all sounds, language processing disorder specifically disrupts the ability to attach meaning to words and sentences. A child with this condition may hear every word clearly but take longer to understand what was said, struggle to find the right words when speaking, or have difficulty organizing thoughts into coherent sentences.

This can look like shyness or disengagement in the classroom, when in reality the child’s brain is working hard to translate language in real time. Reinforcing verbal directions with printed instructions and giving extra time for responses are straightforward strategies that reduce the pressure.

6. Nonverbal Learning Disability

Nonverbal learning disability (NVLD) is one of the less well-known types, and it can be confusing because the name suggests a problem with speaking. It actually refers to difficulty processing nonverbal information: body language, facial expressions, spatial relationships, and visual patterns.

Children with NVLD often have strong vocabularies and verbal skills but struggle with tasks that require visual or spatial reasoning. The signs can be wide-ranging: trouble tying shoelaces, difficulty catching a ball, inability to follow a map, confusion with geometry or fractions, and challenges interpreting sarcasm or metaphorical language. They may also have difficulty breaking large projects into smaller steps or picturing what something looks like from a different angle. Social situations can be particularly hard because so much of human communication is nonverbal, and a child with NVLD may miss cues that peers pick up instinctively.

7. Visual Perceptual/Visual Motor Deficit

This type affects how the brain interprets what the eyes see. It is not a vision problem in the traditional sense; glasses will not fix it. A child with a visual perceptual deficit may reverse letters, lose their place while reading, struggle to distinguish between shapes that look similar, or have trouble judging distance and depth. The visual motor component shows up when the brain has difficulty coordinating what it sees with physical movement, making tasks like copying from a whiteboard, cutting along a line, or navigating between desks particularly challenging.

Enlarged print, high-contrast materials, and text-enlargement software can help with reading tasks. For writing, occupational therapy often targets the connection between visual input and hand movement.

8. ADHD and Its Overlap With Learning Disabilities

ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) is classified as a separate neurodevelopmental condition in the DSM-5-TR, not as a specific learning disorder. However, it appears on most “types of learning disabilities” lists because its symptoms, difficulty sustaining attention, staying organized, and controlling impulses, directly interfere with learning. Many educational frameworks treat it as a learning disability for the purpose of classroom accommodations and IEP eligibility.

The overlap between ADHD and specific learning disabilities is significant. Children with ADHD are far more likely than their peers to also have dyslexia, dyscalculia, or another learning disability. When both conditions are present, the combined effect on academic performance is greater than either one alone. Distinguishing between the two matters because the interventions are different: strategies that improve attention will not fix a reading decoding problem, and reading interventions will not address impulsivity.

Accommodations That Make a Difference

Regardless of the specific type, several accommodations benefit most students with learning disabilities. Extended time on tests and a quiet testing location reduce time pressure and distraction. Note-takers or recorded class sessions help students who struggle to listen and write simultaneously. Breaking large amounts of information into smaller segments makes content more manageable. Alternative evaluation methods, like oral presentations or portfolios, allow students to demonstrate knowledge without being limited by the specific skill their disability affects.

Technology plays an increasingly central role. Computers equipped with text-to-speech software, word prediction, electronic spell-checkers, and screen-enlargement tools give students with learning disabilities access to the same material as their peers. For students with reading disabilities specifically, scanners paired with optical character recognition software can convert printed text to speech, removing the decoding barrier entirely.

Learning disabilities are lifelong conditions, but they are not ceilings. With the right identification and support, people with learning disabilities routinely succeed in school, careers, and daily life. The key is matching the specific type of disability to the specific type of help, which is why understanding these eight categories matters in the first place.
