Research tracked by the University of Queensland’s Ageing Mind Initiative found that women with high berry intake, particularly blueberries and strawberries, delayed memory decline by up to 2.5 years compared to women who rarely ate them. This wasn’t a short-term boost in focus. It was a measurable slowing of the cognitive decline that typically comes with aging.

The anthocyanins in blueberries cross the blood-brain barrier, meaning they can act directly on brain tissue. They appear to reduce inflammation in brain cells and improve signaling between neurons. Clinical trials exploring this effect typically use around 150 grams of whole blueberries daily (roughly one cup), or 24 grams of freeze-dried powder, which concentrates the same active compounds into a smaller volume.

Better Blood Sugar Control

Blueberries can meaningfully improve how your body handles insulin, which is especially relevant if you carry extra weight or have been told your blood sugar is creeping up. A double-blind, placebo-controlled study at UC Davis gave obese, insulin-resistant adults a daily smoothie containing blueberry powder equivalent to about two cups of fresh berries. In one study, participants performed 300 maximal contractions on a single leg to deliberately create micro-tears in the muscle fibers (the kind of damage that causes soreness after a tough workout). Those who consumed blueberry smoothies before, during, and for two days after the exercise showed improved recovery of muscle performance within the first 36 hours.

Blood samples revealed that the blueberry group had higher levels of antioxidant defense despite the smoothies having a similar total antioxidant content to the control drink. Researchers attributed this to the anthocyanins working with the body’s own repair systems rather than simply replacing them.
