The one useful timing clue is that COVID-19 tends to take longer to show up after exposure, typically two to five days and sometimes up to 14 days, compared to the flu’s one-to-four-day window. Loss of taste or smell, once a strong signal for COVID-19, has become less reliable with newer variants. If the distinction matters for your treatment or for protecting people around you, a rapid test is the only way to know for sure.
The Contagious Window Starts Before You Feel Sick
One important detail about early flu symptoms: you’re already contagious before they appear. People with the flu can spread the virus about one day before symptoms begin.
