The five components of physical fitness are cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition. These five elements, often called “health-related fitness components,” give you a complete picture of how well your body performs and how resilient it is against disease. Unlike skill-related fitness traits (speed, agility, coordination), these five apply to everyone, not just athletes.
Cardiovascular Endurance
Cardiovascular endurance is how well your heart and lungs supply oxygen to your muscles during sustained, medium- to high-intensity activity. When this system works efficiently, your blood moves oxygen to cells faster, giving your tissues a steady fuel source. It’s the reason a fit person can jog for 30 minutes comfortably while someone less conditioned is winded after five.
You build cardiovascular endurance through aerobic activity: brisk walking, jogging, swimming, cycling, dancing, even water aerobics. The current Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week (roughly 30 minutes a day, five days a week) or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity like running. A combination of both works too. These aren’t arbitrary numbers. They reflect the threshold at which cardiovascular benefits, from lower blood pressure to reduced heart disease risk, become measurable.
If you’re starting from zero, even 10-minute walks count. Cardiovascular endurance improves relatively quickly compared to other components. Most people notice meaningful changes within four to six weeks of consistent aerobic exercise.
Muscular Strength
Muscular strength is the ability of your muscles to overcome resistance in a single, maximal effort. Think of the heaviest box you can lift off the floor or the most weight you can press overhead one time. In a gym setting, this is measured by the one-repetition maximum (1RM), the heaviest load you can move through a full range of motion with correct form, once.
Building strength involves lifting relatively heavy weights for a low number of repetitions, typically one to five reps per set, at 60 to 80 percent of your 1RM. Rest periods between sets are longer here, usually one to three minutes, because your muscles need time to recover before generating that much force again. You don’t need a barbell to train strength. Pushups, pullups, squats, and even homemade weights like a water-filled bottle all work when the resistance is challenging enough.
Strength matters far beyond the gym. It protects your joints, keeps your bones dense as you age, and determines whether everyday tasks like carrying groceries or climbing stairs feel easy or exhausting. The CDC recommends muscle-strengthening activities on at least two days per week, targeting all major muscle groups: legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms.
Muscular Endurance
Where muscular strength is about one maximum effort, muscular endurance is your muscles’ ability to resist fatigue over repeated contractions. It’s what keeps you going during a long set of pushups, a full day of gardening, or carrying a toddler around a theme park. Both components involve your muscles working against resistance, but the training looks quite different.
To improve endurance, you use lighter loads (around 50 percent of your 1RM) for higher repetitions, typically 15 to 25 per set, with shorter rest periods between sets. Common assessments include the pushup test and the curl-up test, both of which count how many correct repetitions you can complete without breaking form. The YMCA bench press test measures how many reps you can sustain at a fixed cadence of 30 repetitions per minute. Grip strength tests, where you squeeze a handheld device as hard as possible, also serve as a simple estimate of overall muscle function.
In practice, most people benefit from training both strength and endurance. A well-rounded routine might alternate heavier, lower-rep sessions with lighter, higher-rep days.
Flexibility
Flexibility is the ability of a joint, or a series of joints, to move through an unrestricted and pain-free range of motion. It varies from person to person and from joint to joint. You might have flexible hamstrings but tight shoulders, so overall flexibility is really a composite of how mobile each area of your body is.
Clinically, range of motion is measured in degrees using tools like a goniometer, then compared to accepted normal values. For everyday purposes, functional tests are more practical. The sit-and-reach test, for example, measures how far you can extend your hands past your toes while seated, giving a quick snapshot of lower back and hamstring flexibility.
Stretching after exercise, when your muscles are warm and more responsive, is the most effective time to work on flexibility. Static stretches (holding a position for 15 to 30 seconds) and dynamic stretches (controlled movements through a range of motion) both help. Activities like yoga and tai chi build flexibility alongside balance and body awareness. Losing flexibility increases your risk of muscle strains, joint pain, and poor posture, so it’s worth maintaining even if it feels less urgent than cardio or strength work.
Body Composition
Body composition refers to the ratio of fat mass to lean mass (muscle, bone, water, organs) in your body. It’s a more informative measure than weight alone because two people at the same weight can have very different proportions of fat and muscle, with very different health profiles.
There is no single agreed-upon “normal” range for body fat. However, a 2025 study using data from a large U.S. national survey defined overweight as a body fat percentage of at least 25% for men and 36% for women. Obesity was defined as at least 30% for men and 42% for women. These cutoffs offer a rough reference point, though individual context matters.
Several methods exist for measuring body composition. Skinfold assessments use calipers to measure skin thickness at sites where fat typically accumulates, such as the abdomen, hip, arm, back, and thigh. Those measurements feed into an equation that estimates body fat percentage, generally with a margin of error around plus or minus 3%. Skinfold testing is popular outside clinical settings because it’s inexpensive, straightforward, and tracks changes at specific sites over time. An abdominal skinfold dropping from 35mm to 24mm, for instance, shows real progress at that site even if overall body fat percentage shifts only slightly. Bioelectrical impedance devices (common in smart scales) send a small electrical current through your body to estimate fat and lean mass. Hydrostatic weighing, which involves being submerged in water, and DXA scans, a quick and painless X-ray-based method, are more precise but less accessible.
How the Five Components Work Together
No single component tells the full story. Someone with excellent cardiovascular endurance but poor flexibility is still at risk for injury. A person with low body fat but minimal muscular strength may struggle with functional tasks as they age. The value of the five-component framework is that it highlights gaps you might not notice if you only focus on one type of exercise.
A balanced weekly routine covers all five. The CDC’s baseline recommendation of 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity plus two days of strength training addresses three components directly (cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and muscular endurance) and indirectly influences body composition. Adding stretching after workouts and including activities like yoga, tai chi, or simple single-leg balance exercises rounds out the picture. You don’t need five separate programs. A single workout can train multiple components: a circuit that combines bodyweight squats, brisk walking intervals, and a stretching cooldown touches four of the five in under 45 minutes.
Body composition, the fifth component, responds to all four others. Building muscle raises your resting metabolic rate, aerobic exercise burns fuel, and the consistency that flexibility and injury prevention provide keeps you training long enough for those changes to take hold.
