Moringa tea, made from the dried leaves of the Moringa oleifera tree, is rich in antioxidants, contains a notable amount of iron, and shows promising anti-inflammatory effects in lab studies. It’s one of the more nutrient-dense herbal teas you can brew, though some of its popularized benefits are better supported by evidence than others.
Antioxidant Content and How to Maximize It
Moringa leaves contain several well-studied antioxidant compounds, including a relative of quercetin called isoquercetin, astragalin, and crypto-chlorogenic acid. These compounds help neutralize free radicals, the unstable molecules that contribute to cell damage and chronic disease over time. Moringa won’t replace a diet full of fruits and vegetables, but as herbal teas go, it delivers a meaningful dose of plant-based protective compounds.
How you brew the tea matters. Moringa’s bioactive compounds are heat-sensitive, so there’s a sweet spot between extracting enough of them and destroying them with excessive heat or time. Research testing different temperatures and steeping durations found that brewing at 100°C (a full boil) for 6 minutes produced the highest antioxidant activity and phenolic content. Steeping longer than that didn’t help and likely started degrading the very compounds you’re trying to drink. If you’re using loose leaf or tea bags, six minutes in just-boiled water is your target.
Anti-Inflammatory Effects
Moringa leaves contain a unique group of compounds called isothiocyanates, which form when the plant’s cells are broken down during drying, crushing, or chewing. The most studied of these is a compound abbreviated MIC-1, found primarily in moringa seeds but also present in the leaves. In laboratory cell studies, MIC-1 reduced the production of nitric oxide, a key driver of inflammation, by up to 93%. It also suppressed the expression of two inflammatory signaling molecules: IL-1β dropped by up to 62%, and IL-6 dropped by up to 61%.
These are cell-culture results, not human trials, so the effect inside your body after drinking a cup of tea will be less dramatic. Still, the mechanisms are well-characterized and consistent with what researchers see in other plants from the same family (like broccoli and watercress, which contain related isothiocyanates). Regular consumption of moringa tea may contribute to lower baseline inflammation, particularly as part of a broader anti-inflammatory diet.
Iron Content for Anemia Prevention
Moringa leaves contain roughly 17.5 mg of iron per 100 grams of dry weight, which is higher than many other leafy greens including amaranth and kenaf. In animal studies, dietary iron from moringa leaves was actually more effective at reversing iron deficiency than ferric citrate, a standard supplemental form of iron. The iron-deficient animals in that study had experienced a 57% drop in serum iron and a 40% drop in ferritin, and moringa outperformed the conventional supplement in restoring those levels.
A cup of moringa tea won’t deliver as much iron as eating the leaves directly, since not all the mineral content dissolves into water. But for people who drink it daily, it can be a useful addition to their iron intake, especially vegetarians or those with mildly low iron stores. Pairing moringa tea with a source of vitamin C (a squeeze of lemon, for instance) can improve absorption of the plant-based iron.
Breast Milk Production
One of moringa’s most interesting and well-supported benefits is its potential as a galactagogue, a substance that increases breast milk supply. In a clinical trial with 50 breastfeeding mothers in Kenya, those who consumed 20 grams of moringa powder daily for three months produced roughly twice as much expressed milk as the control group: an average of 947 mL compared to 618 mL. That’s a substantial and statistically significant difference.
Twenty grams of powder is considerably more than what you’d get from a single cup of tea, so if you’re using moringa specifically for lactation support, tea alone may not deliver enough. Many breastfeeding mothers use moringa powder stirred into food or smoothies to reach a higher daily dose. It’s worth noting that while the leaves are considered safe during breastfeeding, the bark of the moringa tree has been associated with uterine contractions and should be avoided during pregnancy. Tea made from leaves doesn’t carry this concern.
What About Cholesterol?
You’ll find many claims online that moringa lowers cholesterol and protects heart health. The evidence doesn’t currently support this. A meta-analysis pooling data from multiple randomized controlled trials found no statistically significant effect of moringa supplementation on LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, total cholesterol, or HDL cholesterol compared to placebo. The studies showed high variability between individual trials, which suggests that if moringa does affect cholesterol, the effect is inconsistent and likely small. This doesn’t mean moringa has no cardiovascular value, as its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties could benefit blood vessels through other pathways, but it’s not a substitute for proven cholesterol-lowering strategies.
Nutritional Profile Beyond Iron
Moringa leaves are sometimes called a “superfood” because they contain a broad range of vitamins and minerals in relatively high concentrations. The dried leaves provide vitamin A (as beta-carotene), vitamin C, calcium, potassium, and protein. For an herbal tea, this is unusual. Most herbal teas are essentially flavored water with some antioxidants. Moringa tea delivers more actual nutrition, though again, not as much as eating the leaves in powdered form.
The typical recommended range for moringa leaf powder is 6 to 10 grams per day for adults. If you’re drinking moringa tea, one to two cups daily made from a couple teaspoons of dried leaves falls within this range. Higher doses have been used in clinical studies without reported safety issues, but there’s no strong evidence that more is better for general wellness purposes.
Safety Considerations
Moringa leaf tea is well-tolerated by most adults at typical doses. The main safety concern applies to pregnant women: moringa bark, root, and flowers have been linked to uterine contractions and should be avoided entirely during pregnancy. Leaf-based products carry a lower risk, but many health professionals recommend caution during pregnancy since quality control varies across moringa products, and contamination with bark or root material is possible.
Moringa may lower blood sugar, which is generally a mild effect in healthy people but could matter if you take diabetes medication. Similarly, its anti-inflammatory properties could theoretically interact with immunosuppressive drugs. If you’re on medication for blood sugar, blood pressure, or immune suppression, it’s worth discussing moringa with your prescriber before making it a daily habit.
