What Are the Muscles in Your Arm? Anatomy & Function

Your arm contains more than 20 muscles that work together to move your shoulder, bend your elbow, rotate your wrist, and control your fingers. These muscles are split between two main regions: the upper arm (shoulder to elbow) and the forearm (elbow to wrist). Understanding how they’re organized makes it easier to grasp how your arm works as a whole.

Upper Arm: Four Muscles in Two Groups

The upper arm has four muscles divided into a front compartment and a back compartment. The front (anterior) compartment handles bending motions, while the back (posterior) compartment handles straightening.

The three front muscles are:

  • Biceps brachii: The most recognizable arm muscle. It powerfully bends your elbow and rotates your forearm so your palm faces up (think turning a doorknob or a screwdriver). The long head of the biceps also helps stabilize your shoulder joint.
  • Brachialis: Sits underneath the biceps and is actually the primary muscle responsible for bending your elbow. Because it only crosses one joint, it generates a strong, direct pull every time you curl your forearm upward.
  • Coracobrachialis: A smaller muscle that runs from your shoulder blade to the middle of your upper arm bone. Its main job is pulling your arm inward toward your body.

The back compartment has one large muscle:

  • Triceps brachii: This three-headed muscle covers the entire back of your upper arm. It straightens your elbow and, through its long head, also helps pull your arm backward and toward your body. Every pushing motion, from a push-up to closing a car door, relies heavily on the triceps.

Forearm: Where the Complexity Lives

The forearm packs roughly 20 muscles into a much smaller space, arranged in layers from superficial (near the skin) to deep (close to the bones). These muscles split into a front group (flexors and pronators) and a back group (extensors and supinators).

Front of the Forearm

The front compartment bends your wrist and fingers and rotates your forearm so your palm faces down. Its muscles are stacked in three layers:

  • Superficial layer: Flexor carpi ulnaris, palmaris longus, flexor carpi radialis, and pronator teres. These bend the wrist and help rotate the forearm.
  • Intermediate layer: Flexor digitorum superficialis. This single muscle bends the middle joints of your four fingers.
  • Deep layer: Flexor digitorum profundus, flexor pollicis longus, and pronator quadratus. The profundus bends your fingertips, the pollicis longus bends your thumb, and the pronator quadratus rotates your forearm palm-down.

Back of the Forearm

The back compartment straightens your wrist and fingers and rotates your forearm so your palm faces up. It has two layers:

  • Superficial layer (seven muscles): Brachioradialis, extensor carpi radialis longus, extensor carpi radialis brevis, extensor digitorum, extensor digiti minimi, extensor carpi ulnaris, and anconeus. The extensor digitorum straightens all four fingers, while the carpi muscles extend and stabilize the wrist. The anconeus is a small muscle that assists the triceps in straightening the elbow.
  • Deep layer (five muscles): Supinator, abductor pollicis longus, extensor pollicis brevis, extensor pollicis longus, and extensor indicis. Three of these are dedicated to thumb movement, one isolates the index finger, and the supinator rotates your forearm palm-up.

The Brachioradialis: An Unusual Muscle

The brachioradialis deserves special mention because it breaks the usual rules. It sits on the back (extensor) side of the forearm, yet it bends the elbow like a flexor. It’s the bulge you can see on the outer edge of your forearm when you bend your elbow with your thumb pointing up. In that neutral thumb-up position, the brachioradialis does its best work, compensating for the biceps, which loses mechanical advantage when the forearm is rotated palm-down. Electromyography studies show the brachioradialis is actually more active during palm-down rotation than palm-up, functioning more like a pronator in practice.

How Forearm Muscles Control Your Fingers

One surprising detail: the muscles that move your fingers mostly live in your forearm, not in your hand. These are called extrinsic hand muscles. The flexor digitorum superficialis and flexor digitorum profundus bend fingers two through five, while the flexor pollicis longus bends the thumb. On the back side, the extensor digitorum and extensor pollicis longus straighten the fingers and thumb through long tendons that run across the wrist and down each digit.

This is why a forearm strain can make your grip feel weak, and why people with tennis elbow (which affects the outer forearm) often have trouble gripping objects. The muscles doing the gripping are located well above the hand itself.

Four Nerves That Run the Show

All these muscles are controlled by four major nerves, and knowing which nerve powers which group explains why a single injury can knock out multiple movements at once.

  • Musculocutaneous nerve: Powers the three front upper arm muscles (biceps, brachialis, coracobrachialis). Damage here makes it difficult to bend the elbow.
  • Radial nerve: Controls the triceps, anconeus, and nearly every muscle on the back of the forearm. This is the nerve most often injured by a broken upper arm bone. When it stops working, you lose the ability to straighten your wrist and fingers, a condition called wrist drop.
  • Median nerve: Runs down the center of the forearm and powers most of the front-compartment flexors, including the muscles that bend your fingers and thumb and rotate your forearm palm-down. Compression of this nerve at the wrist is what causes carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • Ulnar nerve: Controls the flexor carpi ulnaris and part of the deep finger flexor, plus many of the small muscles inside the hand. This is the nerve you hit when you bang your “funny bone” at the elbow.

Common Arm Muscle Injuries

Arm muscles are built for heavy, repetitive use, but they have limits. Overuse can irritate tendons (the cords connecting muscle to bone), causing pain and inflammation. Forceful movements, like lifting something heavy out of a truck bed or using incorrect form with weights, can partially or fully tear a tendon. These injuries are most common in men between 30 and 50 but affect women as well.

A full tendon rupture is hard to miss. You may feel a tearing sensation and hear a pop, typically near the elbow or shoulder. The detached muscle can bunch up into a visible bulge, sometimes called a “Popeye” deformity, that doesn’t go away on its own. Swelling, bruising, cramping, and significant loss of strength usually follow. Biceps tendon tears are the most well-known version of this, but the rotator cuff (at the shoulder) and the forearm extensor tendons (at the elbow, as in tennis elbow) are also frequent sites of trouble.

Milder strains in the forearm flexors and extensors are common among people who type, use tools, or play racquet sports. Pain on the inner elbow typically points to the flexor group, while pain on the outer elbow usually involves the extensor group. Rest, gradual strengthening, and addressing the repetitive motion that caused the problem are the standard path to recovery.
