Your legs contain more than 15 major muscles in each limb, organized into distinct groups that work together to move your hips, knees, ankles, and feet. These range from the gluteus maximus, the biggest and strongest muscle in your entire body, to small deep rotators tucked behind your hip joint. Here’s a breakdown of every major group, what each muscle does, and how they coordinate during everyday movement.
Quadriceps: The Front of Your Thigh
The quadriceps are a group of four muscles running down the front of your thigh. Their primary job is straightening your knee. Every time you stand up from a chair, walk upstairs, or kick a ball, your quads are doing the heavy lifting.
The four muscles are:
- Vastus lateralis: the largest of the four, running along the outside of your thigh from your thigh bone to your kneecap.
- Vastus medialis: the smallest, running along the inner thigh. It’s especially important for stabilizing your kneecap during the last few degrees of straightening your knee.
- Vastus intermedius: sits in the middle of your thigh, hidden beneath the rectus femoris.
- Rectus femoris: the only quad muscle that crosses both your hip and knee joints. Because of this dual attachment, it helps with hip flexion (lifting your thigh forward) in addition to extending your knee.
During walking, your quadriceps activate early in each step to control how much your knee bends as your foot hits the ground. They then contract to push your knee back into extension as you move into midstance.
Hamstrings: The Back of Your Thigh
Three muscles make up the hamstrings, running from your sit bones down the back of your thigh to just below your knee. They bend your knee and extend your hip, making them essential for walking, running, and any movement that propels you forward.
- Biceps femoris: sits on the outer part of the back of your thigh. It flexes your knee, extends your hip, and rotates your lower leg side to side when your knee is bent.
- Semitendinosus: runs along the inner back of your thigh and helps with knee flexion and hip extension.
- Semimembranosus: lies beneath the semitendinosus, performing similar actions.
The hamstrings also play a protective role. During walking, the biceps femoris activates at the beginning of each step to control hip flexion and prevent your trunk from pitching forward.
Gluteal Muscles: Your Hip Powerhouse
Your three gluteal muscles sit at the back and side of your hip. They support your body weight, stabilize your pelvis, and generate the force you need to stand, walk, run, and climb.
The gluteus maximus is the biggest and strongest muscle in your body. It extends your hip and keeps your trunk upright. You use it most when you need force to move forward, like standing up from a seated position or pushing off during a sprint. It also helps keep your hips balanced when you sit.
The gluteus medius and gluteus minimus sit beneath the maximus on the outer hip. They pull your leg away from the midline of your body and rotate your thigh. During walking, these two muscles prevent your pelvis from dropping on the opposite side every time you lift a foot off the ground. Without them, you’d lurch side to side with every step.
Adductors: The Inner Thigh
Five muscles line the inner thigh, collectively called the adductor group. They pull your leg inward toward the midline of your body. The five muscles are the adductor longus, adductor brevis, adductor magnus, gracilis, and pectineus.
The adductor magnus is the largest of the group and one of the most powerful muscles in the thigh. It assists with both pulling your leg inward and extending your hip. The gracilis is notable because it’s one of the few adductors that crosses the knee joint, contributing to knee flexion as well. During walking, the adductor group also helps with internal rotation and forward extension of the hip during the loading phase of each step.
Calf Muscles: The Back of Your Lower Leg
Your calf is made up of three muscles that merge into the Achilles tendon above your heel. Together they help you walk, run, jump, stand on your toes, and push your toes toward the ground.
- Gastrocnemius: the large, visible muscle that forms the bulge of your calf. It sits close to the skin’s surface and provides explosive power for jumping and sprinting. It crosses both the knee and ankle joints.
- Soleus: a wide, flat muscle sitting deeper than the gastrocnemius. It starts just below your knee and is a workhorse during standing and walking, controlling the forward tilt of your shin over your foot with each step.
- Plantaris: a small, thin muscle running between the gastrocnemius and soleus. It plays a minor role and is sometimes absent entirely.
During the push-off phase of walking (roughly halfway through each stride), your calf muscles contract forcefully to propel you forward. This is one of the most energy-demanding moments of the entire gait cycle.
Shin and Front Lower Leg Muscles
Four muscles run down the front of your lower leg, primarily responsible for pulling your foot upward (dorsiflexion) and controlling its position as it meets the ground.
The tibialis anterior is the most prominent. It runs along the outer edge of your shinbone and lifts your foot with each step, preventing your toes from dragging the ground during the swing phase of walking. It also works as a brake right after your heel strikes, controlling how quickly your foot lowers to the ground. Without it, your foot would slap down uncontrollably.
The other three muscles in this compartment extend your toes and assist with dorsiflexion. The extensor digitorum longus controls the four smaller toes, the extensor hallucis longus controls the big toe, and the fibularis tertius helps with eversion, turning the sole of your foot outward.
Sartorius: The Longest Muscle
The sartorius is the longest muscle in the human body, averaging about 57.5 centimeters in length. It wraps in an S-shaped path from your outer hip, diagonally across the front of your thigh, to the inner side of your knee. It’s the only thigh muscle that bends both the hip and knee joints, and it can initiate flexion from a fully extended position, something other flexors can’t easily do. It also weakly rotates the hip outward and helps stabilize the pelvis.
Deep Hip Rotators
Six small muscles sit deep behind your hip joint, working primarily to rotate your thigh outward and stabilize the hip. They are the piriformis, quadratus femoris, obturator internus, obturator externus, superior gemellus, and inferior gemellus. You rarely hear about these unless something goes wrong. The piriformis is the most commonly discussed because it can irritate the sciatic nerve when it tightens or spasms.
How These Muscles Coordinate During Walking
Walking looks simple, but it involves precisely timed activation of nearly every muscle group in your leg. When your heel first hits the ground, your shin muscles control the descent of your foot, your quads absorb the impact by controlling knee bend, and your glutes and hamstrings stabilize your hip. Your hip abductors fire to keep your pelvis level.
As you roll over your planted foot during midstance, your calf muscles take over, eccentrically controlling your shin as it tilts forward over your foot. Your quads extend the knee, and your foot’s intrinsic muscles stiffen the arch to create a rigid lever for push-off.
During push-off, your calf muscles contract forcefully to propel you forward while the hip flexors begin pulling your leg into the next swing. The rectus femoris limits how much your knee bends during this transition. Then during the swing phase, your shin muscles lift your toes to clear the ground, and the cycle repeats. Each step involves a seamless relay of muscular effort that, when working well, you never consciously notice.
