For non-reproductive issues, synthetic oxytocin is sometimes administered via nasal spray in research settings to explore its potential for improving social behaviors and anxiety.
The medical utility of synthetic oxytocin for social or mood disorders is still under investigation, and its use outside of labor and delivery is not yet approved by regulatory bodies. Diagnosis and medical intervention require consultation with a healthcare professional, as simple blood tests are not widely standardized for clinical use.
Many natural strategies are effective in stimulating the body’s own oxytocin release. Engaging in positive social interaction and physical touch, such as cuddling, massage, or hugging, is a direct pathway to increasing levels. Other pleasurable activities, including listening to music or exercising, also promote the natural release of the hormone. Practicing mindfulness and reducing general stress can indirectly support the oxytocin system by lowering the influence of cortisol.
