True total color blindness, where you see only shades of gray, is extremely rare. It comes with symptoms well beyond color confusion. People with this condition typically have severe light sensitivity, making bright environments painful or overwhelming. They often have involuntary back-and-forth eye movements and significantly reduced visual sharpness. This isn’t something that goes unnoticed: it’s usually diagnosed in early childhood because the visual difficulties are so apparent.

Color blindness is usually inherited and present from birth, which means kids have never seen colors any other way. They don’t know what they’re missing, so they rarely complain.
