The three main parts of the circulatory system are the heart, blood vessels, and blood. Together, these components form a closed loop that delivers oxygen and nutrients to every cell in your body and carries waste products away. Your heart pumps roughly 2,000 gallons of blood through this network every single day.
The Heart: Your Central Pump
The heart sits near the center of your chest, close to your lungs, and works as a muscular pump with four hollow chambers. The two upper chambers, called atria, receive incoming blood. The two lower chambers, called ventricles, push blood back out. Valves between the chambers keep blood flowing in one direction, preventing backflow with each beat.
The right and left sides of the heart handle two different jobs. The right ventricle pumps oxygen-poor blood to the lungs, where it picks up fresh oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. This loop is called pulmonary circulation. Once that newly oxygenated blood returns to the left atrium, the left ventricle sends it out to the rest of your body through systemic circulation. These two circuits run simultaneously with every heartbeat.
Blood Vessels: The Delivery Network
Blood vessels are the tubing that carries blood between the heart and every tissue in your body. In an average adult, the total length of all blood vessels is estimated between 5,500 and 12,000 miles. They come in three main types, each built differently for a specific role.
Arteries
Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart. They have thick, muscular walls that can handle the high pressure generated by each heartbeat. The largest artery, the aorta, branches off from the left ventricle and distributes blood to progressively smaller arteries throughout the body.
Capillaries
Capillaries are the smallest blood vessels, thin enough that oxygen, nutrients, and waste can pass through their walls. They connect the arterial side to the venous side, forming dense beds in your tissues where the actual exchange happens. Oxygen and small molecules like glucose diffuse through capillary walls into surrounding cells, while carbon dioxide and other waste products move in the opposite direction. This diffusion process is the most common way materials cross capillary walls, though pressure differences between the inside and outside of capillaries also push fluid and dissolved substances into tissues.
Veins
Veins collect oxygen-depleted blood from capillaries and route it back toward the heart. Their walls are thinner and less muscular than arteries because the blood inside them flows under much lower pressure. Many veins, especially in your legs, contain small one-way valves that prevent blood from pooling or flowing backward against gravity.
Blood: What Flows Through It All
Blood is the fluid that actually carries gases, nutrients, immune cells, and waste. An average adult has about five liters of it, and its components break down into a few key parts.
Plasma makes up about 55% of blood. It’s a pale yellow liquid whose main job is transport. Plasma carries blood cells, proteins, salts, hormones, and nutrients throughout the body. It also shuttles waste products from cells to the kidneys and liver for removal, and it helps regulate body temperature.
Red blood cells account for about 44% of blood. They contain hemoglobin, a protein that binds to oxygen in the lungs and releases it in tissues where cells need it to produce energy. Red blood cells also pick up carbon dioxide, a waste product of energy production, and carry it back to the lungs so you can exhale it.
White blood cells and platelets make up the remaining 1%, but they punch well above their weight. White blood cells are your immune system’s front line, hunting down and destroying germs and abnormal cells. Platelets seal damaged blood vessels by forming clots, keeping blood in and pathogens out.
How the Three Parts Work Together
None of these three components functions in isolation. The heart creates the pressure that drives blood through the vessels. The vessels direct that blood to the right places and provide the surface area for exchange. The blood itself is the medium that carries everything cells need and everything they need to get rid of. Remove any one part and the other two become useless.
The circulatory system also works closely with the lymphatic system. Fluid that leaks out of capillaries into surrounding tissue gets collected by lymphatic vessels and returned to the bloodstream. This happens on a large scale: your body’s entire plasma volume, about three liters, seeps out of blood vessels roughly every nine hours, and the lymphatic system channels most of it back. Lymphatic vessels also transport immune cells and help move cholesterol out of tissues and into the blood for processing.
Keeping the System Healthy
Because the heart, blood vessels, and blood depend on each other, protecting one part generally protects all three. The 2025 guidelines from the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology emphasize lifestyle habits as the foundation: maintaining a healthy weight, following a heart-healthy eating pattern like the DASH diet, reducing sodium, increasing potassium from food, getting regular moderate physical activity, managing stress, and limiting alcohol.
Blood pressure is a particularly useful number to track because it reflects how hard your heart is working and how much strain your vessel walls are absorbing. Keeping systolic blood pressure below 130 mm Hg is now recommended not only for heart and kidney protection but also to help prevent cognitive decline and dementia over time.
