Strawberries are packed with vitamin C, folate, and smaller amounts of several other vitamins that make them one of the more nutrient-dense fruits you can eat. A single cup of sliced strawberries (about 166 grams) delivers roughly 97 mg of vitamin C, which already exceeds what most adults need in a day. But vitamin C is just the headline act.
Vitamin C: The Standout Nutrient
Vitamin C is the vitamin strawberries are best known for, and the numbers back that up. Cup for cup, strawberries actually deliver more vitamin C than oranges. One cup of sliced strawberries provides 97 mg, while a medium orange provides 83 mg. That single cup covers well over 100% of the daily recommended intake for adults.
Vitamin C serves as a powerful antioxidant, neutralizing unstable molecules that damage cells over time. It’s also essential for building collagen (the protein that holds skin, joints, and blood vessels together) and for helping your immune system function properly. Your body can’t store large amounts of it, so getting a regular supply from food matters.
Research on people who ate strawberries daily for one month found a 41% increase in plasma vitamin C levels and a significant boost in overall antioxidant capacity. At the same time, several markers of oxidative stress dropped by roughly 28 to 31%, suggesting the vitamin C and other antioxidants in strawberries work together effectively.
Folate (Vitamin B9)
Strawberries are a surprisingly good source of folate, a B vitamin that many people associate only with leafy greens. Fresh strawberries contain between 30 and 69 micrograms of folate per 100 grams, depending on the variety. That means a generous 250-gram serving (roughly a large bowl) supplies around 125 micrograms of folate, which covers about 30% of the U.S. daily recommendation of 400 micrograms.
Folate is critical for cell division and DNA synthesis, which is why adequate intake is so important during pregnancy. It plays a well-established role in preventing neural tube defects during early fetal development. Beyond pregnancy, good folate status is linked to heart health and may support cognitive function as you age. For a fruit that most people eat purely for the taste, that’s a meaningful nutritional contribution.
Other Vitamins in Strawberries
Beyond the two big players, strawberries contain modest but useful amounts of several other vitamins:
- Vitamin K: Important for blood clotting and bone health. Strawberries aren’t a top source, but they contribute a small amount alongside other foods in your diet.
- Vitamin B6: Helps your body metabolize protein and supports neurotransmitter production. Strawberries provide a small dose per serving.
- Thiamin (B1) and riboflavin (B2): Both play roles in converting food into energy. The amounts in strawberries are minor on their own but add up as part of a varied diet.

In the same month-long strawberry consumption study mentioned above, markers of cardiovascular risk and platelet activation improved alongside the antioxidant gains, suggesting anthocyanins and vitamin C reinforce each other.
On the mineral side, strawberries provide manganese, a trace mineral that supports bone mineral density and helps your body metabolize protein and carbohydrates. Manganese often flies under the radar, but it activates many of the enzymes involved in everyday metabolism.
How Storage Affects Vitamin Content
How you store strawberries matters more than most people realize, especially for vitamin C. Freezing is a common way to preserve them, but temperature makes a big difference. Strawberries frozen at standard home freezer temperatures (around minus 18°C or 0°F) lost only about 11% of their vitamin C over 15 days. Drop the temperature to minus 24°C and losses shrink to under 9%. But warmer freezer conditions, around minus 12°C (about 10°F), led to a 64.5% loss in vitamin C content over the same period.
The practical takeaway: if you’re freezing strawberries, make sure your freezer is set to 0°F or colder. At that temperature, frozen strawberries retain the vast majority of their vitamin C and remain nutritionally comparable to fresh. Avoid storing them in a freezer that runs warm, like the small compartment inside some older refrigerators.
Does Ripeness Change the Vitamin Content?
The deep red color of a fully ripe strawberry isn’t just an indicator of sweetness. Anthocyanin levels increase steadily as strawberries ripen, which means the reddest berries carry the highest concentration of those protective pigments. Vitamin C content also generally increases with ripening, though the exact pattern varies somewhat between cultivars.
Interestingly, some other beneficial compounds move in the opposite direction. Certain flavonols and tannin-related compounds decrease as the fruit matures. So a fully ripe strawberry has a different antioxidant profile than an underripe one, not necessarily a better or worse one. For most people, choosing the ripest, reddest berries gives you the best combination of flavor, vitamin C, and anthocyanins.
