What Are Wisdom Teeth Used For?

Wisdom teeth don’t serve a meaningful function in most modern humans. They’re evolutionary leftovers from a time when our ancestors needed extra grinding power to process a much tougher diet. Today, human jaws are typically too small to accommodate them, which is why these third molars so often become a problem rather than an asset.

What Wisdom Teeth Were Originally For

Early human ancestors survived on a diet that demanded serious chewing power. Their meals included hard, brittle foods like raw nuts and fibrous plant material such as stems, seed pods, and coarse roots. These foods required repetitive, forceful grinding to break down, and a full set of 32 teeth, including three molars on each side of both jaws, made that possible. The broad, flat surfaces of third molars added extra crushing area at the back of the mouth where bite force is greatest.

Those ancestors also had much larger, thicker jawbones built to withstand the extreme mechanical stress of chewing raw, unprocessed food. Their tooth enamel was thicker too, an adaptation that resisted breakage during hard-object feeding and prolonged the life of teeth that wore down quickly on an abrasive diet. In that context, wisdom teeth weren’t just useful. They were essential for survival. Losing a molar to wear or fracture was common, and having a third set erupt in late adolescence effectively gave the jaw a replacement.

Why Your Jaw Is Too Small for Them Now

The shift from raw, tough foods to cooked, processed ones reshaped the human skull. Cooking softens food, reduces particle size, and cuts down on both the force per chew and the number of chewing cycles needed. Over thousands of years, this meant less mechanical strain on the jaw during growth, which led to smaller faces and shorter dental arches. The most dramatic decreases in facial size happened after the Neolithic period, when agriculture replaced foraging as the primary food source.

The numbers are striking. Comparisons of Nubian populations before and after the adoption of agriculture show a 22% reduction in jaw length and a 15% reduction in the thickness of the chin, even as brain size was increasing at the same time. Similar shrinkage has been documented in Australian Aboriginal populations and others who transitioned to modern processed diets within the last century. The jaw got smaller, but the number of teeth programmed into our DNA stayed the same. That mismatch is the root cause of nearly every wisdom tooth problem.

Animal studies confirm the mechanism: primates raised on softer food develop narrowed upper jaw arches, crowded teeth, and displaced molars, patterns that mirror the dental crowding seen in modern humans.

When Wisdom Teeth Become a Problem

Wisdom teeth typically erupt between ages 17 and 25, though they can appear much later. When there isn’t enough room, they become impacted, meaning they’re partially or fully trapped beneath the gum line or blocked by other teeth. Impaction is not a rare complication. It’s the norm for many people, precisely because modern jaws often lack the space these teeth need.

A partially erupted wisdom tooth creates a flap of gum tissue that traps bacteria and food debris, leading to a painful infection called pericoronitis. Symptoms include pain, swelling of the gum and face, a persistent bad taste, and difficulty opening the mouth. The infection can spread to nearby lymph nodes and cause fever and general illness. In rare cases, the swelling can become severe enough to compromise the airway.

Impacted wisdom teeth can also cause deeper damage over time. They may push against neighboring molars, destroying adjacent teeth and bone. Cavities can develop on wisdom teeth that are difficult to reach with a toothbrush, eventually killing the tooth and forming an abscess. In some cases, cysts or tumors develop around an impacted tooth within the jawbone.

Some People Never Get Them at All

Not everyone develops a full set of four wisdom teeth, and a significant portion of the population never develops any. The worldwide rate of being born without at least one wisdom tooth is about 22.6%. Asian populations have the highest rate, around 29.7%. This varies considerably across ethnic groups and geographic regions. The trend suggests that human evolution is gradually phasing out these teeth, since there’s no survival disadvantage to lacking them in a world of cooked and processed food.

Removal vs. Monitoring

If your wisdom teeth have fully erupted, are properly aligned, and you can keep them clean, they function like any other molar and don’t necessarily need to come out. Some people use them for chewing without any issues for their entire lives.

The more common scenario is that wisdom teeth are impacted or poorly positioned. The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons recommends extracting impacted third molars even when they aren’t currently causing symptoms, because complications tend to worsen with age and extraction becomes more difficult and carries higher risks in older patients. Younger patients recover faster, with less bone density around the tooth roots and a lower chance of nerve damage during surgery.

If your wisdom teeth are being monitored rather than removed, regular dental X-rays are important. Problems like cyst formation or damage to neighboring teeth can develop silently, without pain, long before they become obvious.
