Being drunk feels different at every stage, but the earliest and most universal sensation is a loosening: your inhibitions soften, your mood lifts, and social situations feel easier. As you keep drinking, that pleasant warmth gives way to clumsiness, slowed thinking, and eventually a loss of control over your body and judgment. The experience isn’t one single feeling. It’s a progression, and where you are on that curve determines whether alcohol feels like a mild buzz or a medical emergency.
Why Alcohol Changes How You Feel
Alcohol works on your brain through two main channels. First, it boosts the activity of your brain’s primary calming system. It causes more of your natural “slow down” signals to fire and makes the receiving cells more responsive to them. That’s what produces the initial relaxation, the sense that tension is melting away, and the feeling that you’re less worried about what people think of you.
At the same time, alcohol suppresses your brain’s main excitatory signaling, the system responsible for alertness and quick thinking. The combination of ramped-up calming signals and dampened alertness signals is why even a small amount of alcohol makes you feel noticeably different from sober. Your brain is literally running in a lower gear.
On top of that, alcohol triggers a burst of activity in your brain’s reward pathway, which is why those first drinks feel genuinely good. You’re not imagining the euphoria. Your brain is releasing the same feel-good chemicals it uses to reward eating, laughing, or having sex.
The Two-Phase Experience
One of the most important things to understand about being drunk is that it has two distinct phases. While your blood alcohol is still rising (the ascending limb), alcohol acts more like a stimulant. You feel energized, talkative, and confident. This is the phase people are chasing when they say they like to drink.
Once your blood alcohol peaks and starts to fall, the experience flips. The stimulant qualities fade and the depressant side takes over: drowsiness, sluggishness, sadness, or irritability. This is why someone can seem like the life of the party one hour and be slumped in a corner the next. The same substance is producing both experiences, just at different points on the curve.
What Each Level Feels Like
At a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) around 0.02%, which is roughly one drink for most people, you’ll notice a subtle mood shift. You feel slightly more relaxed, maybe a bit warmer. Your judgment is mildly affected, but you’re still very much yourself.
At 0.05%, the feeling is more pronounced. You feel uninhibited and socially loose. Your alertness drops and your judgment is noticeably impaired, though you may not realize it. This is the “buzzed” zone, and many people describe it as the sweet spot: pleasantly relaxed without feeling out of control.
At 0.08%, the legal driving limit in the U.S., muscle coordination declines and it becomes harder to detect danger. Your reasoning is impaired enough that you’ll make decisions you wouldn’t sober. You may feel fine, but reaction tests and coordination tasks tell a different story.
At 0.10%, things get unmistakable. Your speech slurs, your reaction time drops noticeably, and your thinking slows. You might repeat yourself, lose your train of thought, or take longer to process what someone just said to you.
At 0.15% and above, you’re in the territory of serious intoxication: mood swings, nausea, vomiting, and significant loss of balance and muscle control. Between 0.15% and 0.30%, confusion and drowsiness dominate. Above 0.30%, you risk losing consciousness, and between 0.30% and 0.40%, alcohol poisoning becomes a real possibility.
How Your Body Feels
The physical sensations of being drunk are largely driven by what alcohol does to the part of your brain responsible for coordination and balance. This is why one of the most recognizable signs of intoxication is a staggering walk. Your brain loses its ability to fine-tune muscle movements, so you sway, stumble, and misjudge distances.
Alcohol also disrupts the brain regions that regulate eye movements, especially when both your head and eyes are moving. This creates a kind of visual “slippage” where objects seem to shift position. It’s a major reason drunk people feel dizzy, misjudge distances, and struggle with tasks that require hand-eye coordination. Research has shown that alcohol specifically impairs your ability to judge how far away objects are when you or they are in motion, which helps explain why drunk driving is so dangerous even when someone “feels fine.”
Other common physical sensations include a warm or flushed feeling (especially in the face and chest), a tingling or heaviness in your limbs, dry mouth, and the need to urinate frequently. At higher levels of intoxication, nausea and the sensation of the room spinning become common.
How Your Thinking and Emotions Shift
One of the most well-studied effects of alcohol on the mind is something researchers call “alcohol myopia.” It’s not about your eyes. It’s about your attention. Alcohol shrinks your mental field of view so that you focus almost entirely on whatever is most immediately in front of you and lose the ability to consider less obvious or more distant consequences.
This plays out in surprisingly specific ways. If someone provokes you while you’re drunk and there’s nothing to distract you from it, you’ll react more aggressively than you would sober. But if something else grabs your attention, you may actually react less aggressively than a sober person would. The same pattern holds for anxiety: drunk people become more anxious than sober people when a stressor is front and center, but less anxious when they’re distracted from it. It’s not that alcohol makes you aggressive or relaxed by default. It amplifies whatever has your attention in the moment.
This narrowed focus also distorts decision-making in a particular way. When you’re drunk and thinking about a goal, you tend to fixate on how appealing the goal is while ignoring how realistic it is to achieve. That’s why drunk people make grand plans, send bold texts, or commit to things they’d never agree to sober. The desire feels huge and the obstacles feel invisible.
Risk assessment gets warped by the same mechanism. Studies have shown that intoxicated people are more willing to take sexual risks when cues suggesting safety are prominent, but can actually become more cautious than sober people when cues about danger are made impossible to ignore. The problem is that in real life, the risky, exciting option is usually the most salient one.
How Long It Lasts
Your liver processes alcohol at a fairly fixed rate: roughly one standard drink per hour for an average-sized person (about 70 kg or 154 pounds). A standard drink means one 12-ounce beer, one 5-ounce glass of wine, or one 1.5-ounce shot of liquor. If you drink faster than this rate, your BAC rises and you get progressively more drunk.
Nothing speeds up this process. Coffee, cold showers, food after drinking, and “sweating it out” are all myths when it comes to sobering up faster. Time is the only thing that works. If you stop drinking at a BAC of 0.08%, it will take roughly four to five hours for your body to fully clear the alcohol. If you reach 0.15%, you’re looking at closer to eight hours before you’re back to zero.
The Comedown and Hangover
As alcohol leaves your system, your brain doesn’t simply return to its normal state. While you were drinking, your brain was compensating for alcohol’s depressant effects by cranking up its excitatory systems. When the alcohol is gone, those compensatory changes are still active, leaving your nervous system in a state of overexcitement. This is the biological basis of a hangover and, in heavier drinkers, withdrawal.
That rebound overexcitement is why hangovers involve the opposite of what drinking felt like. Instead of relaxation, you get anxiety. Instead of drowsiness, you get fragmented, poor-quality sleep. Instead of euphoria, you get a flat, joyless feeling. Your body’s stress response is also elevated, producing a rapid heartbeat, sweating, nausea, and trembling. The anxiety that follows a night of drinking can persist even after the physical symptoms have cleared, which is one reason people are tempted to drink again to relieve it.
When Drunk Becomes Dangerous
The line between being very drunk and being in danger is thinner than most people realize. Alcohol at very high concentrations can suppress the brain regions that control breathing, heart rate, and body temperature. It can also shut down the gag reflex, meaning someone who vomits while passed out can choke and suffocate.
The critical signs that someone has crossed from drunk into a medical emergency include: mental confusion or stupor, inability to stay conscious or be woken up, vomiting (especially while unconscious), seizures, breathing that is slow (fewer than 8 breaths per minute) or irregular (gaps of 10 seconds or more between breaths), a slow heart rate, clammy skin, and bluish or extremely pale skin color. Any of these is a reason to call emergency services immediately. A person does not need to show all of these signs to be in danger.
