What Brings Your Blood Pressure Up: Common Causes

Many things can raise your blood pressure, from what you eat and drink to how you sleep, what medications you take, and even how you sit during a reading. Some triggers cause a temporary spike lasting minutes to hours, while others push your pressure up gradually over months and years. Understanding both kinds helps you figure out what’s actually going on with your numbers.

Salt and How It Affects Your Arteries

Salt is the most well-known dietary driver of high blood pressure, but the mechanism is more complex than “salt makes you retain water.” While the traditional explanation focuses on extra fluid volume in your bloodstream, newer research shows that high sodium levels in your body also signal your brain to ramp up nerve activity that tightens blood vessels. Sodium reaches the fluid surrounding your brain and triggers sensors that increase the firing rate of nerves controlling vascular tone. The result is sustained constriction of your arteries, which directly raises the pressure inside them.

At the same time, your adrenal glands release a hormone that further enhances this constriction through a separate signaling chain in your blood vessel walls. So salt raises blood pressure through at least two routes: expanding your blood volume and actively squeezing your arteries tighter. This is why some people are especially “salt-sensitive,” meaning their pressure responds dramatically to changes in sodium intake.

Added Sugar Works Differently Than You’d Expect

Sugar, particularly fructose from sweetened beverages and processed foods, raises blood pressure through a less obvious path. When your body breaks down fructose, it produces uric acid as a byproduct. Uric acid generates harmful reactive molecules inside the cells lining your blood vessels, which damage and deactivate nitric oxide, the compound your body uses to relax and widen arteries. In animal studies, fructose feeding cut the production of this relaxation signal by roughly 30 to 50 percent in the small arteries that regulate blood flow.

Without enough nitric oxide, your vessels stay constricted, and your pressure climbs. This effect builds over time with regular intake of added sugars, making it a chronic contributor that many people overlook while focusing only on salt.

Caffeine, Alcohol, and Nicotine

Caffeine causes a short-term blood pressure spike. In the first week of regular consumption, it raises pressure by about 5/2 mmHg on average. With continued use beyond a week, the body partially adapts, and the increase drops to around 3/3 mmHg. If you’re checking your blood pressure at home, drinking coffee within an hour or two beforehand can skew your reading noticeably.

Alcohol raises blood pressure in a straightforward, dose-dependent way with no safe threshold. Even a single standard drink per day (about 12 grams of alcohol) is associated with systolic pressure roughly 1.25 mmHg higher than nondrinkers. At four drinks per day, that gap widens to nearly 5 mmHg systolic and 3 mmHg diastolic. That may sound modest individually, but across a population, even small sustained increases translate to meaningfully higher rates of heart attack and stroke.

Nicotine, whether from cigarettes, vaping, or nicotine replacement products, raises mean blood pressure by about 5 mmHg and heart rate by about 7 beats per minute. It does this by directly stimulating the sympathetic nerves that constrict blood vessels. The effect kicks in within minutes and persists for at least 40 to 60 minutes after exposure, which means frequent smoking keeps pressure elevated for much of the day.

Stress and Your Nervous System

When you’re under stress, your sympathetic nervous system fires up, releasing chemical signals that tighten blood vessels and increase your heart rate. This is the classic “fight or flight” response, and it raises blood pressure quickly and measurably. A stressful meeting, an argument, or even rushing to an appointment can push your numbers up in the moment.

What makes stress especially relevant is the distinction between occasional spikes and chronic activation. In people with established high blood pressure, research shows that the sympathetic nervous system stays overactive in a pattern distinct from a simple anxiety response. It selectively targets the nerves controlling the heart, kidneys, and skeletal muscle blood vessels while leaving other circuits alone. This sustained overdrive keeps pressure elevated around the clock, not just during stressful moments. Chronic job stress, financial strain, or ongoing emotional tension can all keep this system running hotter than it should.

Sleep Apnea and Nighttime Oxygen Drops

Obstructive sleep apnea is one of the most common and underdiagnosed causes of persistently high blood pressure. When your airway collapses repeatedly during sleep, your blood oxygen drops and carbon dioxide rises. Each episode triggers a surge of sympathetic nerve activity and a flood of stress hormones. Over time, these repeated surges don’t just affect your nighttime pressure. They rewire your nervous system so that the elevated sympathetic tone and higher stress hormone levels persist into the daytime, raising your blood pressure 24 hours a day.

If your blood pressure is stubbornly high despite medication, or if you snore heavily and feel tired during the day, sleep apnea is worth investigating. Treating it often brings blood pressure down significantly.

Common Medications That Raise Blood Pressure

Several over-the-counter medications can push your blood pressure up, sometimes enough to interfere with prescription treatments you’re already taking. The two most common culprits are pain relievers and decongestants.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen raise blood pressure by blocking the production of compounds called prostaglandins that help keep your kidney blood vessels open. When those vessels constrict, your kidneys retain more sodium and fluid, and stronger constricting forces go unopposed. Studies have shown that regular ibuprofen use raises both systolic and diastolic pressure compared to acetaminophen, and it can blunt the effectiveness of blood pressure medications you may be taking.

Oral decongestants like pseudoephedrine work by constricting blood vessels in your nasal passages to reduce swelling, but that constriction isn’t limited to your nose. It affects vessels throughout your body, temporarily raising pressure. If you’re managing hypertension, these are worth avoiding during cold and allergy season.

Things That Skew Your Reading

Sometimes the issue isn’t that your blood pressure is truly elevated, but that the measurement itself is inflated by avoidable factors. One of the most dramatic: a full bladder can add up to 33 mmHg to your systolic reading. That’s enough to push a perfectly normal reading into Stage 2 hypertension range on paper.

Other common measurement errors include sitting with your legs crossed (which compresses blood vessels), having the cuff over clothing, resting the cuff below or above heart level, talking during the reading, or not sitting quietly for at least five minutes beforehand. If your numbers seem surprisingly high at a single visit, consider whether any of these factors were in play before assuming your blood pressure has genuinely changed.

Weight, Inactivity, and the Bigger Picture

Excess body weight raises blood pressure through multiple overlapping mechanisms: increased blood volume to supply more tissue, greater sympathetic nervous system activity, higher insulin levels that promote sodium retention, and physical compression of the kidneys by surrounding fat. Even modest weight loss of 5 to 10 pounds can produce measurable drops in pressure.

Physical inactivity compounds the problem. Regular exercise improves the flexibility of your blood vessels, helps your body process sodium more efficiently, and lowers resting sympathetic nerve activity. Without it, your vascular system gradually stiffens, and your baseline pressure drifts upward over years. The combination of excess weight, high sodium intake, regular alcohol use, poor sleep, and inactivity doesn’t just add up. These factors amplify each other, making the resulting blood pressure higher than any single cause would produce alone.
