Post-nasal drip happens when excess or thickened mucus builds up in the back of your throat, causing that persistent need to swallow or clear your throat. Your nose and throat glands normally produce one to two quarts of mucus every day to moisturize your airways, trap inhaled particles, and fight infections. You rarely notice this process. Post-nasal drip is what happens when something disrupts that system, either by increasing mucus production or changing its consistency.
The causes range from common allergies and colds to less obvious triggers like acid reflux and certain medications. Understanding what’s behind yours is the first step toward getting relief.
Allergies
Allergic rhinitis is one of the most frequent causes of post-nasal drip. When your immune system overreacts to something harmless like pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mold, it triggers inflammation in the nasal lining. That inflammation ramps up mucus production well beyond what your throat can comfortably handle.
Seasonal allergies tend to cause watery, thin mucus that drips steadily, especially during spring and fall when pollen counts spike. Year-round allergens like dust mites and pet dander can keep post-nasal drip going for months. If your symptoms follow a predictable pattern (worse outdoors, worse in certain rooms, worse during specific seasons), allergies are a likely culprit. Reducing exposure helps: dust mite covers on pillows and mattresses, keeping windows closed during high pollen days, and showering after time outdoors can all make a noticeable difference.
Colds and Sinus Infections
Viral infections are the most common infectious cause. A standard cold inflames the nasal lining and floods it with mucus, producing that familiar post-nasal drip that lasts about seven to ten days. Viruses also cause most sinus infections, which can extend symptoms further.
Bacterial sinus infections are less common but tend to be more persistent. The CDC recommends seeing a healthcare provider if your symptoms last more than 10 days without improving, if they get worse after initially getting better, if you develop a fever lasting longer than three to four days, or if you experience severe headache or facial pain. Multiple sinus infections in a single year also warrant a closer look, since recurring infections can point to an underlying structural or immune issue.
Acid Reflux (Especially LPR)
This is one of the most overlooked causes. Laryngopharyngeal reflux, or LPR, is a form of acid reflux where stomach acid travels all the way up into the throat. Unlike typical heartburn, most people with LPR don’t feel a burning sensation in their chest. Instead, they notice post-nasal drip, frequent throat clearing, a hoarse voice, or a feeling of something stuck in the throat. Many assume they have allergies or a cold that won’t go away.
Even a small amount of stomach acid reaching the throat can interfere with the normal mechanisms that clear mucus and infections from your sinuses and throat. Mucus that would normally trap and flush out irritants gets stuck, creating a cycle of buildup and irritation. If your post-nasal drip doesn’t respond to allergy treatments and isn’t tied to cold symptoms, LPR is worth considering.
Structural Problems in the Nose
Physical obstructions inside the nasal passages can prevent mucus from draining the way it should. A deviated septum, where the wall between your nostrils is off-center, can impair normal sinus drainage. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, this can lead to recurring sinus infections, each one bringing another round of post-nasal drip.
Nasal polyps, which are soft, painless growths on the lining of the sinuses, can block drainage pathways in a similar way. Both conditions create a situation where mucus pools instead of flowing freely, and you feel it collecting in the back of your throat. These structural issues tend to cause chronic, year-round symptoms rather than seasonal ones.
Medications That Trigger Nasal Symptoms
Several types of medication can cause nasal congestion and increased mucus as a side effect, a condition broadly called drug-induced rhinitis. Blood pressure medications like ACE inhibitors and beta blockers are common offenders. Medications used to treat an enlarged prostate (alpha blockers) and certain erectile dysfunction drugs can also trigger nasal symptoms.
Overusing nasal decongestant sprays creates its own problem. Using these sprays for more than three to five consecutive days can cause rebound congestion, where your nasal passages swell worse than before you started. This leads to a cycle of increased spray use and worsening symptoms, including persistent post-nasal drip. If you suspect a medication is behind your symptoms, talk to your prescriber about alternatives rather than stopping on your own.
Spicy Foods and Temperature Changes
If your nose starts running the moment you eat something spicy or step outside on a cold day, you’re experiencing gustatory or vasomotor rhinitis. Spicy foods and heat activate a nerve called the trigeminal nerve in the mucous membranes of your nose. This triggers a burst of mucus production and dilates blood vessels in the nasal lining, causing both a runny nose and congestion.
This type of rhinitis isn’t driven by allergies or infection. It’s a nerve-mediated reflex, and it tends to be short-lived, resolving once the trigger is removed. Cold, dry air can provoke a similar response. For some people, strong odors, cigarette smoke, or changes in humidity are enough to set it off.
Aging and Changes in Mucus Quality
Post-nasal drip becomes more common with age, and the reason has to do with physical changes in the nasal lining. As you get older, the blood flow to the structures inside your nose decreases, which can cause dryness and crusting. At the same time, the balance of mucus-producing cells shifts. The glands responsible for thin, watery mucus become less active, while cells that produce thick, sticky mucus become more numerous.
The result is mucus that’s harder for your body to clear. Many older adults develop daily thick post-nasal drainage, nasal congestion, and frequent throat clearing, often describing it as “sinus trouble.” This isn’t necessarily caused by infection or allergies. It’s the natural consequence of an aging nasal lining producing mucus with a different consistency than it used to. Staying hydrated, using saline nasal rinses, and keeping indoor humidity at a comfortable level can help thin the mucus and make it easier to manage.
Dry Air and Dehydration
Sometimes the issue isn’t too much mucus but mucus that’s too thick to flow normally. Low indoor humidity, especially during winter when heating systems dry out the air, can thicken nasal secretions enough that they collect in the throat instead of passing through unnoticed. Dehydration has the same effect. When your body doesn’t have enough fluid to keep mucus thin, it becomes sticky and noticeable.
This is often the easiest cause to fix. A humidifier in the bedroom, adequate water intake throughout the day, and regular saline nasal rinses can thin out mucus and reduce that dripping sensation within days.
