You can lower your cholesterol meaningfully through a combination of dietary changes, regular exercise, and a few targeted lifestyle shifts. Most people see results within weeks to months, and the specific strategies below have well-documented effects on LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, HDL (“good”) cholesterol, and triglycerides.
Eat More Soluble Fiber
Soluble fiber works by binding to cholesterol in your digestive system and pulling it out of your body before it reaches your bloodstream. Five to 10 grams of soluble fiber a day is enough to lower LDL cholesterol. That’s not a huge amount: a bowl of oatmeal gives you about 2 grams, a medium apple adds another 1 gram, and half a cup of cooked beans gets you 2 to 3 grams. Other good sources include barley, flaxseed, Brussels sprouts, and oranges.
The key word here is “soluble.” Whole wheat bread and brown rice are healthy, but their fiber is mostly insoluble, which helps digestion without doing much for cholesterol. Focus on oats, beans, lentils, and fruits to hit that 5 to 10 gram target.
Cut Back on Saturated Fat
Saturated fat raises LDL cholesterol more than almost anything else in your diet. The American Heart Association recommends keeping saturated fat to 5% to 6% of your total daily calories if your LDL is elevated. For someone eating 2,000 calories a day, that works out to roughly 11 to 13 grams of saturated fat, or about the amount in one and a half tablespoons of butter.
The biggest sources in most people’s diets are red meat, full-fat dairy (cheese, cream, whole milk), butter, and coconut oil. You don’t need to eliminate these entirely. Replacing them with unsaturated fats is what actually moves the needle. Cook with olive oil instead of butter. Swap a steak dinner for salmon or chicken once or twice a week. Choose nuts or avocado as a snack instead of cheese. These trades replace LDL-raising fats with fats that either lower LDL or leave it alone.
Add Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Try Plant Sterols and Stanols
Plant sterols and stanols are natural compounds found in small amounts in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains. They work by blocking your body’s absorption of cholesterol in the gut. At a dose of 2 grams per day, they lower LDL cholesterol by 8% to 10%, according to Cleveland Clinic data.
You won’t get 2 grams from normal food alone. Fortified products are the practical route: certain margarines, orange juices, and yogurt drinks are enriched with sterols and stanols and list the amount on the label. Two servings of a fortified spread per day typically gets you to the 2 gram mark. These products are widely available in grocery stores and work whether or not you’re on cholesterol medication.
Exercise Regularly
Aerobic exercise lowers triglycerides, reduces LDL, and raises HDL. Research consistently shows that exercising three or more times per week at moderate intensity produces measurable improvements in your lipid profile. You don’t need to train for a triathlon. Brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or jogging at a pace where you can carry on a conversation but feel slightly winded all count as moderate intensity.
Higher-intensity workouts appear to offer additional benefits. One study that compared different exercise intensities found that moderate-intensity exercise significantly decreased triglycerides, total cholesterol-carrying particles, and LDL concentrations while also shifting LDL particles toward a larger, less harmful size. Lose Weight If You Need To
Carrying extra weight, especially around the midsection, tends to raise LDL and triglycerides while lowering HDL. You don’t need a dramatic transformation to see results. Losing approximately 10% or less of your body weight has been shown to reduce cholesterol levels. More specifically, a weight loss of about 20 pounds has been associated with a 15% drop in LDL and a 30% reduction in triglycerides, along with increases in HDL.
That 30% triglyceride drop is especially notable because triglycerides are one of the lipid markers most responsive to weight changes. Limit Alcohol

The cardiovascular benefits of quitting extend well beyond cholesterol: within a year, your risk of heart disease drops to roughly half that of a current smoker.
Know Your Numbers
Understanding where you stand helps you gauge how aggressively to pursue lifestyle changes. For adults, an LDL level of 190 mg/dL or higher is considered severe hypercholesterolemia and typically calls for medication in addition to lifestyle changes. For LDL levels between 70 and 189 mg/dL, doctors now use risk calculators that factor in your age, blood pressure, diabetes status, and other variables to determine whether medication is warranted or whether lifestyle changes alone are a reasonable first step.
If your LDL is mildly to moderately elevated and you don’t have other major risk factors, the strategies above, pursued consistently for three to six months, can produce meaningful reductions. A follow-up blood test after that period gives you a clear picture of what’s working and whether further intervention is needed.
