What Can I Take for Joint Pain and Inflammation?

For most joint pain, over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen or naproxen are the most effective first-line option. They reduce both pain and the underlying inflammation driving it. But pills aren’t your only choice. Topical treatments, supplements, dietary changes, and specific foods can all play a role depending on where your pain is, how severe it is, and how long you’ve been dealing with it.

Anti-Inflammatory Pain Relievers

NSAIDs (ibuprofen, sold as Advil or Motrin, and naproxen, sold as Aleve) are generally more effective than acetaminophen (Tylenol) for joint pain because they target inflammation, not just the pain signal. If your joints are swollen, stiff, or warm to the touch, that’s inflammation at work, and acetaminophen won’t address it.

Acetaminophen still has a role if you can’t tolerate NSAIDs or have stomach issues. But stay well under the ceiling: while the technical maximum is 4,000 milligrams per day, liver problems can occur even at that dose. Aiming for 3,000 milligrams or less is safer, and you need to account for acetaminophen hiding in other products like cold medicine or combination painkillers.

NSAIDs come with their own tradeoffs. Long-term use can irritate the stomach lining, raise blood pressure, and stress the kidneys. If you find yourself reaching for ibuprofen daily for more than a week or two, that’s a sign to explore other options rather than just continuing.

Topical Treatments

When pain is limited to one or two joints, especially knees, hands, or other joints close to the skin’s surface, topical options let you deliver relief right where you need it. Topical NSAIDs like diclofenac gel (sold over the counter as Voltaren) reach similar concentrations in the muscle tissue beneath the skin as oral versions, but with far lower levels in your bloodstream. That means fewer stomach and kidney concerns. In clinical trials, topical diclofenac caused adverse effects in only about 2% of users, compared to 5% for oral ibuprofen.

The tradeoff is that topical NSAIDs work best for superficial joints. A deep joint like the hip is harder to reach through the skin, so oral medication is usually more effective there.

Capsaicin cream is another topical worth trying. It works by depleting a pain-signaling chemical in your nerve endings. The catch: it causes a burning sensation when you first start using it, and you need to apply it consistently (typically three to four times daily) before the burning fades and the pain relief kicks in. Many people give up too early. Stick with it for at least one to two weeks before judging whether it’s working.

Fish Oil and Omega-3s

Fish oil is one of the better-supported supplements for joint pain, particularly the inflammatory kind. The key is dose: studies showing real anti-inflammatory effects used more than 2.6 grams per day of combined EPA and DHA (the active omega-3 fatty acids). At those levels, fish oil measurably lowers inflammatory markers in the blood and reduces the activity of inflammatory immune cells.

Most drugstore fish oil capsules contain around 300 milligrams of combined EPA and DHA per capsule, so you’d need a concentrated formula or multiple capsules to reach effective levels. If you take a blood thinner or aspirin, keep your intake under 3 grams daily because fish oil has a mild blood-thinning effect of its own.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin

These are among the most popular joint supplements on the market, but the evidence is genuinely mixed. A large analysis of 29 studies with over 6,000 participants found that glucosamine or chondroitin taken separately reduced pain in knee osteoarthritis, but combining the two (which is how they’re most commonly sold) did not show a significant benefit. Individual study results varied widely, and when researchers looked only at the highest-quality trials, the benefits shrank or disappeared.

The major U.S. medical organizations, including the American College of Rheumatology and the Osteoarthritis Research Society International, recommend against using glucosamine and chondroitin for knee osteoarthritis, citing lack of consistent evidence. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons takes a softer position, noting the supplements may help mild-to-moderate knee pain while cautioning the data is inconsistent. Some European guidelines support a specific pharmaceutical-grade glucosamine sulfate formulation but discourage other forms.

If you want to try them, give it two to three months. They aren’t fast-acting. But don’t expect dramatic results, and don’t keep spending money on them if nothing changes.

Turmeric and Curcumin

Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has real anti-inflammatory properties. In one clinical trial, 500 milligrams of curcumin taken three times daily performed comparably to a standard prescription anti-inflammatory for arthritis pain over one month. The challenge is absorption: curcumin on its own passes through your digestive system without much getting into your bloodstream. Look for formulations designed for better absorption (often labeled as containing black pepper extract, or using lipid-based or nanoparticle delivery).

Cooking with turmeric is unlikely to deliver enough curcumin to affect joint pain. Supplemental doses in the range of 1,000 to 1,500 milligrams daily are what the clinical evidence supports.

Dietary Changes That Lower Inflammation

What you eat on a regular basis affects your baseline level of inflammation. Three dietary components have strong evidence for lowering C-reactive protein, a key inflammatory marker tied to joint pain.

  • Fatty fish: Salmon, mackerel, sardines, and other cold-water fish provide omega-3s that directly reduce inflammatory proteins. Two to three servings per week is a reasonable target.
  • Fiber: Getting fiber from whole foods (beans, whole grains, vegetables) lowers C-reactive protein more effectively than fiber supplements. Most adults fall well short of the recommended 25 to 30 grams per day.
  • Colorful fruits and vegetables: Carrots, bell peppers, sweet potatoes, and tomatoes contain carotenoids, antioxidants that measurably reduce C-reactive protein levels.

These changes won’t replace medication for severe pain, but over weeks and months they shift your inflammatory baseline in a direction that makes everything else work better.

When Joint Pain Needs More Than Self-Treatment

Most joint pain from overuse, mild arthritis, or aging responds to the options above. But certain patterns signal something more serious. A joint that’s red, swollen, warm, and tender, especially with a fever, could indicate an infection or a flare of inflammatory arthritis that needs prompt treatment. After an injury, a joint that looks deformed, can’t bear weight, or swelled up suddenly warrants immediate evaluation. Severe pain that comes on without explanation also falls into this category.

Joint pain that persists for more than a few weeks despite consistent self-treatment is worth getting evaluated. Imaging or bloodwork can distinguish between osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis, and other causes, and the right treatment depends heavily on which one you’re dealing with.
