Dry eyes can be managed with a combination of home care, over-the-counter drops, prescription treatments, and in some cases, in-office procedures. The right approach depends on what’s causing your dryness and how severe it is, but most people start with simple changes and work up from there.
Start With Warm Compresses
Many cases of dry eye stem from blocked oil glands along the eyelid margins. These glands produce an oily layer that sits on top of your tears and slows evaporation. When the oil thickens and clogs the glands, your tears evaporate too quickly, leaving your eyes dry and irritated.
A warm compress held over closed eyes can soften and loosen that oil. The key is getting the temperature right: research shows the ideal range is about 40 to 41.5°C (104 to 107°F), which is warm enough to melt the thickened oil to roughly 90% of its maximum fluidity. A clean washcloth soaked in warm water works, but it cools quickly. Microwavable eye masks hold heat longer and more evenly. Aim for 5 to 10 minutes per session, and gently massage your eyelids afterward to help express the softened oil.
Choosing the Right Eye Drops
Artificial tears are the most common first-line treatment. They work by stabilizing your tear film and reducing evaporation, which keeps moisture on the eye surface longer. You’ll find two main types on the shelf: preserved and preservative-free.
Preserved drops contain chemicals like benzalkonium chloride (BAK) that prevent bacterial growth in the bottle. They’re convenient and generally well tolerated if you use them four to six times a day or less. But BAK can damage surface cells on the eye, reduce protective mucus-producing cells, and worsen inflammation over time. If you need drops more than a few times daily, or if your eyes are already inflamed, preservative-free single-use vials are the better choice. They cost a bit more but eliminate the risk of preservative-related irritation entirely.
Thicker gel drops and ointments provide longer-lasting moisture but blur vision temporarily. Many people reserve these for bedtime.
Adjust Your Environment
Your surroundings play a bigger role in tear evaporation than most people realize. Indoor humidity of about 45% or higher is best for your eyes. In winter or in air-conditioned spaces, humidity often drops well below that. A room humidifier, especially near your desk or bed, can make a noticeable difference.
Screen time is another major contributor. When you stare at a screen, your blink rate drops significantly, which means your tear film breaks down faster. The 20-20-20 rule is a simple countermeasure: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Position your monitor slightly below eye level so your eyelids cover more of the eye surface, and angle air vents away from your face. If you wear contact lenses and your dryness is persistent, reducing lens wear can help considerably.
Prescription Options That Target Inflammation
When drops and lifestyle changes aren’t enough, prescription treatments go after the underlying problem. Chronic dry eye often involves a cycle of inflammation on the eye surface that suppresses tear production, which causes more dryness, which triggers more inflammation.
Cyclosporine eye drops (sold as Restasis and generics) work by dialing down the immune response that’s suppressing your tear glands. The catch is patience: it can take six weeks or longer before you notice improvement. Many people use artificial tears alongside cyclosporine during that ramp-up period.
Lifitegrast (Xiidra) takes a different approach, blocking a specific protein on immune cells that drives the inflammatory cascade. It tends to work a bit faster, with some relief starting around two weeks and full effects building over six to twelve weeks.
A newer option, varenicline nasal spray (Tyrvaya), works through an entirely different pathway. Instead of targeting inflammation, it stimulates the nerve pathway that triggers natural tear production. You spray it in your nose, and clinical trials showed significantly improved tear production and dryness scores within four weeks. Some people experience sneezing or a temporary taste change.
In-Office Procedures for Stubborn Cases
If your oil glands are severely blocked, a treatment called LipiFlow uses a device that applies controlled heat and gentle pressure directly to the inner eyelid. The entire session takes 12 minutes, and studies reviewed by NICE (the UK’s health technology authority) found that a single treatment can produce sustained improvement in gland function and dry eye symptoms lasting six months to a year.
Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, originally developed for skin conditions, has shown strong results for oil gland dysfunction. A meta-analysis found significant improvements in both symptom scores and tear stability after treatment. IPL works best when simpler measures like warm compresses and lubricating drops haven’t been enough, and patients in earlier stages of gland dysfunction tend to see greater benefit. The effects last several months, which makes it a good option if you struggle with the daily routine of compresses and drops.
Punctal plugs are tiny silicone or collagen inserts placed into the tear drainage channels at the inner corner of your eyelids. By slowing tear drainage, they keep your natural tears (and any artificial tears you use) on the eye surface longer. The procedure takes minutes, is painless, and the plugs can be removed if needed. They’re typically recommended for moderate dry eye that hasn’t responded well to drops alone.
Nighttime Dryness and Incomplete Eyelid Closure
Some people wake up with eyes that feel gritty, painful, or stuck shut. This often happens because their eyelids don’t fully close during sleep, a condition called nocturnal lagophthalmos that’s more common than most people realize.
Thick ointments applied at bedtime are the usual starting point, but they can blur morning vision and sometimes irritate rather than help. If ointments aren’t cutting it, moisture-chamber goggles or sealed sleep masks create a humid microenvironment around your eyes that dramatically reduces overnight evaporation. The goal is complete enclosure of the area around the eye to trap humidity. Some people get creative with plastic wrap under a fabric mask to achieve the same seal. Even surgical tape or adhesive nasal strips can be used to keep the lids gently closed. It sounds unusual, but these low-tech solutions can be surprisingly effective for stubborn morning dryness.
What About Omega-3 Supplements?
Omega-3 fatty acids have been widely recommended for dry eyes, but the largest clinical trial on the topic, the DREAM trial, produced disappointing results. Participants who took 3,000 mg of omega-3 daily for 12 months did not improve significantly more than those taking an olive oil placebo. The lead researchers concluded the study does not support omega-3 supplements for moderate to severe dry eye disease. A diet rich in fatty fish is still good for overall health, but supplements alone are unlikely to resolve your symptoms.
How Dry Eye Is Diagnosed
If you visit an eye doctor for dry eyes, they’ll likely run a couple of quick tests. The Schirmer test involves placing a small paper strip under your lower eyelid for five minutes to measure tear production. Less than 10 millimeters of wetting generally suggests some form of dry eye. The tear breakup time test uses a drop of dye to watch how quickly your tear film deteriorates between blinks. A breakup time under 8 to 10 seconds is considered abnormal. Together, these tests help distinguish between eyes that aren’t producing enough tears and eyes that are losing tears too fast through evaporation, which determines which treatments will work best for you.
