Low blood pressure, defined as a reading below 90/60 mmHg, can often be managed with straightforward changes to your diet, hydration, and daily habits. Some people run naturally low without symptoms, but if you’re dealing with dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting, there are several effective strategies to bring your numbers up and keep them stable.
Increase Your Salt and Fluid Intake
Salt helps your body hold onto water, which increases blood volume and raises pressure. For people with orthostatic hypotension (the kind that makes you dizzy when you stand), medical guidelines recommend significantly more sodium than the general population gets. The American Society of Hypertension suggests 2,400 to 4,000 mg of sodium per day for these patients, while some specialists recommend even higher amounts of 4,000 to 8,000 mg daily, depending on the underlying condition. A practical approach is adding 1,000 to 2,000 mg of sodium to your diet three times per day through salted foods, broth, or salt tablets.
Fluid intake matters just as much. Aim for 2 to 3 liters of water per day. Research published in Circulation found that drinking just 500 mL (about 16 ounces) of water improved the ability to stand without symptoms by an average of 5 minutes. That’s a meaningful difference if you’re someone who gets lightheaded every time you get out of bed. Keeping a water bottle nearby and drinking consistently throughout the day is one of the simplest and most effective things you can do.
Adjust How and What You Eat
Blood pressure commonly drops after meals, a condition called postprandial hypotension. When your body diverts blood to your digestive system, less is available for the rest of your circulation. You can minimize this by eating six smaller meals throughout the day instead of three large ones, and by keeping those meals low in carbohydrates. Carb-heavy meals cause a bigger blood pressure drop than meals built around protein and fat.
Drinking 12 to 16 ounces of water before eating also helps buffer the post-meal dip. A caffeinated drink before breakfast or lunch can provide an additional short-term boost, since caffeine temporarily constricts blood vessels.
Use Physical Counter-Maneuvers
When you feel a dizzy spell coming on, specific muscle-tensing techniques can quickly push blood back toward your heart and brain. The American Heart Association recommends several of these:
- Leg crossing with muscle tensing: Cross your legs and squeeze your thigh, abdominal, and buttock muscles. You can do this lying down or standing.
- Squatting: Lower yourself into a squat, tense your lower body and abdomen, and stay there until symptoms pass before standing slowly.
- Hand gripping: Clasp your hands together with interlocked fingers and pull your arms in opposite directions as hard as you can.
- Fist clenching: Make a tight fist and hold the contraction at maximum effort, with or without something in your hand.
- Neck tensing: Tuck your chin to your chest and tighten the muscles in your neck.
These work by squeezing blood out of your muscles and veins and back into central circulation. They’re especially useful in the moment you feel symptoms starting, like when you’ve been standing in line or just gotten up from a chair.
Wear Compression Garments
Compression stockings prevent blood from pooling in your legs, which is one of the main reasons blood pressure drops when you stand. Most specialists recommend waist-high stockings rated at 20 to 30 mmHg or 30 to 40 mmHg of pressure. Knee-high stockings are easier to put on but less effective, since a large amount of blood pools in the thighs and abdomen. Abdominal binders can also help by compressing the large blood vessels in your core. Wearing compression garments during the day, particularly in the morning when orthostatic symptoms tend to be worst, can make a noticeable difference.
Change How You Move and Sleep
Small adjustments to your daily routine can prevent the sudden drops that cause symptoms. Sit on the edge of the bed for 30 seconds to a minute before standing in the morning. Avoid standing up quickly from any seated or lying position. If you’ve been lying down for a while, move to sitting first, then to standing in stages.
Sleeping with the head of your bed slightly elevated can also help. Even a modest tilt reduces the dramatic blood pressure shift that happens when you go from lying flat to upright in the morning. You can achieve this with a foam wedge under the mattress or by placing risers under the legs at the head of the bed.
Avoid prolonged standing when possible, and if you can’t avoid it, shift your weight, rock on your heels, or use the muscle-tensing techniques described above. Hot showers and baths dilate blood vessels and can worsen symptoms, so keeping water temperature moderate and sitting on a shower chair are practical precautions.
When Lifestyle Changes Aren’t Enough
If dietary and behavioral strategies don’t control your symptoms, medications are available. The two most commonly prescribed options work in different ways. One increases blood volume by helping your kidneys retain more sodium and water. The other directly tightens blood vessels to raise pressure. Both require monitoring, since the goal is raising your standing blood pressure without pushing it too high when you’re lying down.
Medication is typically reserved for people whose symptoms significantly affect daily life, such as those who faint regularly or can’t stand long enough to complete basic tasks. Your provider will also look for underlying causes, since low blood pressure can result from dehydration, heart conditions, endocrine disorders, or medications you’re already taking. Adjusting or stopping a blood pressure-lowering medication that’s overshooting its target is sometimes the simplest fix.
Symptoms That Need Urgent Attention
Occasional lightheadedness on standing is common and usually manageable. But certain symptoms alongside low blood pressure signal something more serious: confusion, cold or clammy skin, rapid shallow breathing, a weak and fast pulse, or bluish skin discoloration. These can indicate shock, where organs aren’t getting enough blood flow, and require emergency care. Fainting that happens without warning, especially during exercise or while sitting, also warrants prompt evaluation to rule out a cardiac cause.
