The work demands strong communication skills and attention to detail, since you’re constantly liaising with colleagues from different scientific backgrounds and with government reviewers.

Government and Regulatory Agencies

Pharmacists at the FDA review drug proposals submitted by private industry, monitor marketed drugs for safety and effectiveness, advise on significant new drugs, and conduct research to develop new compounding techniques. You compound radioactive drugs, then deliver them to a hospital’s nuclear medicine department. The work requires extensive training in radiation safety, and you handle materials behind leaded glass shielding using lead-lined syringe shields and containers. Board certification in nuclear pharmacy is available through the Board of Pharmacy Specialties.

The specialty appeals to people who want hands-on compounding work in a high-stakes, technically demanding environment. Hours often start very early in the morning, since radioactive materials decay quickly and need to be prepared fresh for the day’s procedures.

Pharmacy Informatics

If you’re more interested in technology than patient-facing care, pharmacy informatics sits at the intersection of pharmacy practice and information systems. Informatics specialists implement and maintain the software that powers medication dispensing, electronic prescribing, barcode-assisted medication administration, and pharmacy databases. You might work on deploying robotic dispensing systems, improving electronic health record workflows, or analyzing data from automated IV compounding technology.

The role requires both clinical knowledge (understanding what pharmacists need from a system) and technical skills (being able to design, test, and implement new processes). PGY2 residencies in informatics exist for those who want formal training, though many pharmacists transition into informatics roles through on-the-job experience.

Academia and Research

Pharmacy faculty positions at universities typically blend teaching, clinical practice, and research in varying proportions. A common model for clinical faculty is roughly 60 percent clinical practice and 40 percent academic work, though this varies widely. Some faculty members spend four days a week at a practice site and one day fulfilling academic responsibilities.
