However, from that same study, the effect from a single serving didn’t last a full 24 hours. That means consistency matters more than one-time doses. But the more interesting finding is what happened inside the blood vessels themselves. A measure called flow-mediated dilation, which reflects how well arteries expand when they need to, improved by about 2% within just two hours of drinking a blueberry beverage. That improvement held steady after a month of daily consumption.

Like hibiscus, the benefit traces back to anthocyanins. These compounds improve the function of the endothelial cells that line your blood vessels, essentially helping the inner walls of your arteries stay flexible and responsive. Frozen blueberries blended with water or low-fat yogurt give you the same compounds as fresh, often at a lower price.

Unsalted Tomato Juice Adds Potassium

A study of 94 Japanese adults with untreated prehypertension or hypertension found that regular consumption of unsalted tomato juice lowered systolic blood pressure from an average of 141 mmHg to 137 mmHg, with diastolic pressure dropping from 83 to 81 mmHg. Those are modest but statistically significant shifts.

If you’re not a milk drinker, unsweetened plant milks fortified with calcium and potassium offer a reasonable substitute, though the mineral profiles aren’t identical. What to Avoid Drinking
