What Causes a Chicken to Be Egg Bound: Signs and Fixes

Egg binding happens when a hen’s reproductive tract cannot push a formed egg out of her body. The egg gets stuck, usually in the lower portion of the oviduct or near the vent, and the hen is unable to lay it on her own. This is a potentially fatal condition if not addressed within 24 to 48 hours. Several factors can cause it, ranging from nutritional deficiencies to inflammation to simply producing an egg that’s too large.

How Eggs Normally Move Through the Oviduct

A chicken’s oviduct is a long, muscular tube lined with tiny hair-like structures called cilia. When everything works properly, the muscles of the oviduct contract in waves (similar to how your intestines move food along), while the cilia help guide the egg from the ovary down through the oviduct and out through the vent. The whole process from ovulation to laying takes roughly 25 to 26 hours.

Egg binding occurs when something disrupts either the muscular contractions or the cilia’s ability to move the egg along. Research published in the National Library of Medicine identifies inflammation of the oviduct as the fundamental problem behind most cases. When the oviduct becomes inflamed, the cilia deteriorate and the muscles lose their ability to contract in the coordinated pattern needed to push the egg out. Without that coordination, the egg stalls in place or even moves backward.

Calcium Deficiency and Muscle Failure

Calcium plays a double role in egg production. It forms the eggshell, but it also fuels the muscle contractions that push the egg through the oviduct. When a hen doesn’t get enough calcium in her diet, her body prioritizes shell formation, leaving less calcium available for the muscles. The result is weak, uncoordinated contractions that can’t expel the egg.

This is especially common in older hens and heavy producers. A hen that has been laying consistently for years may have depleted her calcium reserves to the point where supplementation through feed alone isn’t enough. Oyster shell offered free-choice is one of the most effective ways to ensure hens can self-regulate their calcium intake, since different hens need different amounts depending on their laying rate and age.

Oversized and Double-Yolk Eggs

Sometimes the problem isn’t the hen’s body but the egg itself. Double-yolk eggs can be double or even triple the size of a standard egg, and that extra volume can physically overwhelm the oviduct. The muscles simply can’t stretch far enough or contract powerfully enough to move an abnormally large egg through.

Double-yolk eggs are most common at two points in a hen’s life: when young pullets first begin laying and their reproductive systems haven’t yet settled into a regular rhythm, and in older hens whose hormonal cycles become less precise. Young pullets that start laying earlier than normal are at particular risk because their oviducts may not be fully developed yet. Consistent production of extra-large eggs also raises the risk of vent prolapse, where part of the oviduct pushes out of the body along with (or instead of) the egg.

Oviduct Infection and Inflammation

Salpingitis, an infection of the oviduct, is one of the more serious causes of egg binding. Bacterial infections (often from E. coli or other organisms that enter through the vent) trigger an immune response that damages the oviduct lining. Research shows that immune cells flood the oviduct wall during infection, destroying the cilia that normally help move eggs along. Without functional cilia and with swollen, inflamed tissue narrowing the passage, eggs can become lodged.

If salpingitis goes untreated, it can progress to oviduct impaction (a physical blockage of built-up material), internal egg laying where eggs drop into the abdominal cavity instead of passing through the oviduct, and egg yolk peritonitis, a life-threatening infection of the abdomen. These complications make salpingitis one of the leading causes of reproductive death in laying hens.

Age and Breed

Egg binding is most common in older hens and in production breed strains that have been selectively bred for high egg output. As hens age, the muscles of the oviduct naturally lose tone and weaken. A hen that laid effortlessly at two years old may struggle at four or five because the contractions are no longer strong enough.

Production breeds like ISA Browns, Golden Comets, and other commercial hybrids lay at much higher rates than heritage breeds. That sustained output accelerates the wear on reproductive tissues and depletes calcium reserves faster. Heavier-bodied breeds can also face egg binding simply because excess body fat puts physical pressure on the oviduct, making it harder for eggs to pass.

Stress and Environmental Triggers

Stress disrupts a hen’s hormonal balance, and her reproductive system is one of the first things affected. Common stressors that can contribute to egg binding include sudden temperature drops, overcrowding, predator harassment, and changes to the flock hierarchy.

Artificial lighting is another factor worth watching. Many backyard keepers add supplemental light in winter to maintain egg production, but pushing hens beyond about 16 hours of total light per day causes measurable stress. Light-stressed birds become restless and agitated, and the hormonal disruption can interfere with normal egg formation and laying. If you use supplemental lighting, keeping bulbs at 30 to 40 watts and limiting total light exposure to 14 to 16 hours helps reduce the risk.

Dehydration can also play a role. Water is needed for the oviduct to produce the lubricating mucus that helps the egg slide through. A hen that isn’t drinking enough, whether because water sources are frozen, dirty, or too far from the coop, is more likely to have difficulty passing an egg.

Recognizing a Hen in Trouble

An egg-bound hen typically shows a cluster of signs rather than one single symptom. She may sit on the nest for hours without producing an egg, walk with a wide-legged or penguin-like stance, strain visibly, or stop eating and drinking. Her abdomen may feel swollen or hard, and you might be able to feel the egg near the vent if you gently palpate the area. Some hens become lethargic and fluffed up, sitting low on the ground with their eyes partially closed.

In severe cases, the stuck egg can press against internal organs and blood vessels, cutting off circulation and leading to shock. Small-bodied bantam breeds tend to decline faster than larger hens. The general window for intervention is 24 to 48 hours from when symptoms appear, though some hens deteriorate much faster than that.

Reducing the Risk

Most cases of egg binding trace back to one or more preventable factors. Providing adequate calcium through oyster shell (separate from the regular feed so hens can eat it as needed) is the single most impactful step. A balanced layer feed with 3.5% to 4% calcium content covers baseline needs, but free-choice oyster shell lets high producers and older hens top up.

Keeping hens at a healthy weight matters too. Obese hens have more difficulty laying because fat deposits compress the oviduct. Limiting treats and scratch grains to no more than 10% of total diet helps prevent excess weight gain. Clean, fresh water available at all times supports the lubrication and hydration the reproductive tract needs.

For flocks with supplemental lighting, staying within the 14- to 16-hour range and using low-wattage bulbs avoids pushing hens into reproductive overdrive. And for keepers who notice a hen repeatedly producing unusually large eggs, monitoring that bird more closely during laying can help catch problems early, before they become emergencies.
