What Causes a Yeast Infection? Triggers Explained

Yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of a fungus called Candida, most commonly Candida albicans. This fungus naturally lives on your skin and inside your body, including your mouth, throat, gut, and vagina. It only becomes a problem when something disrupts the balance that normally keeps it in check, allowing it to multiply faster than your body can control.

How Candida Grows Out of Control

Your body maintains a careful ecosystem of bacteria and fungi. In the vagina, beneficial bacteria called Lactobacillus dominate a healthy environment, keeping the pH acidic (typically between 3.8 and 4.5) and preventing other organisms from taking over. Candida is always present in small amounts, but this acidic environment and the competition from good bacteria keep it from causing symptoms.

When something disrupts that balance, Candida seizes the opportunity. The fungus thrives in warm, moist, sugar-rich environments. Once it starts multiplying unchecked, it triggers the familiar symptoms: itching, burning, thick white discharge, and irritation. While Candida albicans is the most frequent culprit, other species like Candida glabrata, Candida parapsilosis, and Candida tropicalis can also cause infections, and some of these are harder to treat with standard medications.

Antibiotics Are a Common Trigger

One of the most frequent causes of yeast infections is antibiotic use. Antibiotics kill the bacteria making you sick, but they also wipe out the beneficial bacteria that keep Candida in check. Broad-spectrum antibiotics, the kind prescribed for bronchitis or sinus infections, are especially disruptive because they target a wide range of bacteria rather than a specific type.

You may develop a yeast infection during or shortly after finishing a course of antibiotics. Without enough Lactobacillus to maintain that acidic vaginal environment, Candida grows rapidly. This doesn’t mean you should skip antibiotics when you need them, but it does explain why yeast infections often follow an illness that required antibiotic treatment.

Hormonal Changes and Estrogen

Estrogen plays a direct role in vaginal ecology. It increases glycogen (a form of stored sugar) in vaginal tissue, which feeds Lactobacillus and helps maintain a healthy pH. But when estrogen levels rise significantly, the extra glycogen can also fuel Candida growth, tipping the balance toward infection.

This is why yeast infections are more common during pregnancy, when estrogen levels surge. Hormonal contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy can produce a similar effect. Women in their sexually active years, when estrogen is naturally higher, are more susceptible than those who haven’t yet reached puberty or who are postmenopausal. The connection isn’t that estrogen is harmful; it’s that dramatic shifts or sustained elevations create conditions where Candida can thrive alongside the bacteria that normally keep it controlled.

High Blood Sugar Feeds the Fungus

Candida feeds on sugar, which makes blood sugar levels a significant factor. When blood sugar runs high, your body releases excess sugar through mucous membranes and urine, creating a richer food source for yeast. People with uncontrolled or poorly managed diabetes are particularly vulnerable to recurrent yeast infections for this reason.

You don’t need to have diabetes for this to matter. Blood sugar spikes from any cause can shift the environment in Candida’s favor, though the effect is most pronounced when elevated glucose is sustained over time. For people who get frequent yeast infections without an obvious explanation, checking blood sugar levels is a reasonable step.

A Weakened Immune System

Your immune system is constantly surveilling Candida levels and keeping the fungus from spreading. When that immune surveillance weakens, yeast infections become more likely and can be more severe. Conditions that suppress immunity, including HIV, autoimmune diseases, and cancer treatment like chemotherapy, all raise the risk substantially. Long-term use of corticosteroids, often prescribed for conditions like asthma or inflammatory diseases, can also lower your body’s ability to keep Candida in check.

For people with healthy immune systems, yeast infections are uncomfortable but generally straightforward to treat. For those with compromised immunity, infections can be more persistent, more difficult to resolve, and more likely to spread beyond the vagina or mouth to deeper tissues.

Moisture, Heat, and Clothing

Candida thrives in warm, dark, moist environments. Sitting in a wet bathing suit, exercising in non-breathable fabric, or wearing tight synthetic underwear all create exactly the conditions the fungus prefers. The combination of body heat, trapped sweat, and limited airflow around the genital area gives Candida a growth advantage.

Practical changes can reduce this risk. Cotton underwear allows more airflow than synthetic materials. Moisture-wicking fabrics in workout and swimwear help sweat evaporate faster. Changing out of wet clothes promptly, whether from swimming, exercising, or just sweating on a hot day, removes one of the key environmental factors that lets Candida multiply. Loose-fitting pants, skirts, or dresses are better choices than tight clothing during warmer months.

Recurrent Yeast Infections

Most people who get a yeast infection experience it as an isolated event tied to a clear trigger: a round of antibiotics, a hormonal shift, a stretch of hot weather. But fewer than 5% of women experience recurrent infections, defined as three or more episodes within a single year. Recurrent infections often involve a combination of factors working together, such as ongoing hormonal contraceptive use in someone who also has mildly elevated blood sugar and a preference for tight clothing.

Some recurrent cases involve non-albicans species like Candida glabrata, which is more often resistant to standard antifungal treatments. Around 5% of invasive Candida glabrata cases show resistance to one or more antifungal medications, and resistance patterns are increasing. If standard treatment isn’t resolving your infections, the specific species of Candida involved may need to be identified so a more targeted approach can be used.

Multiple Factors Usually Overlap

Yeast infections rarely have a single clean cause. More often, two or three risk factors converge. You take antibiotics for a sinus infection during the summer, wear tight jeans, and have slightly elevated blood sugar from stress. Individually, each factor might not be enough. Together, they create the perfect storm for Candida overgrowth. Understanding the full range of triggers helps you identify which ones you can control and which ones explain why an infection showed up when it did.
