What Causes Allergies in Dogs: Food, Fleas, and More

Dog allergies are caused by an overreaction of the immune system to substances that are normally harmless. Up to 15% of dogs worldwide are affected by atopic dermatitis alone, and the triggers fall into four main categories: environmental allergens, food proteins, flea saliva, and contact irritants. Understanding which type your dog is dealing with is the first step toward getting their symptoms under control.

How a Dog’s Immune System Creates an Allergic Reaction

In a healthy dog, the immune system ignores everyday substances like pollen, dust, and common food proteins. In an allergic dog, the immune system treats these harmless substances as threats. The process starts with a specific type of antibody called IgE, which attaches to immune cells throughout the body. When the dog encounters the allergen again, IgE triggers those cells to release inflammatory compounds, including histamine. That flood of histamine is what causes the itching, redness, and swelling you see.

The underlying problem is a shift in how the immune system is wired. Allergic dogs have an immune response that skews heavily toward producing IgE antibodies, a pathway that evolved to fight parasites. Instead of targeting worms, though, this misdirected response targets pollens, mold spores, food proteins, or flea saliva. Multiple genes control how much IgE a dog produces and how the immune system regulates itself, which is why allergies tend to run in certain breeds and family lines.

Environmental Allergens

Environmental allergies, also called atopic dermatitis, are the most common type. The triggers are substances your dog breathes in or absorbs through the skin during normal daily life. The major culprits include pollens (from grasses, trees, and weeds), mold spores, dust mites, and plant or animal fibers. Some of these are seasonal. Tree pollen peaks in spring, grass pollen in summer, and weed pollen in fall. Others, like dust mites and indoor mold, cause problems year-round.

Dogs with environmental allergies typically show signs on their paws, belly, ears, and face. You’ll notice them licking their feet, scratching their ears, or rubbing their face on furniture. These symptoms often start between ages one and three and tend to get worse over time as the dog becomes sensitized to more allergens. If your dog’s itching comes and goes with the seasons, environmental allergens are the most likely cause.

Food Allergies

True food allergies in dogs are less common than environmental ones, but they cause significant discomfort. The immune system reacts to specific proteins in the diet, and the most frequent offenders are beef, chicken, eggs, and dairy. Grains and gluten are rarely the problem, despite widespread belief. Gluten sensitivity has only been documented in Irish Setters and Border Terriers. Any protein source can theoretically trigger a reaction, but animal proteins are by far the most common culprits.

Food allergies can cause skin symptoms that look identical to environmental allergies: itching, redness, and recurring ear infections. Some dogs also develop digestive symptoms like vomiting or diarrhea. One key difference is that food allergy symptoms don’t change with the seasons. If your dog is itchy year-round with no seasonal pattern, food could be part of the picture.

The only reliable way to diagnose a food allergy is an elimination diet trial. This means feeding your dog a single veterinary diet designed specifically for this purpose, with no other food, treats, flavored medications, dental chews, or table scraps for 8 to 12 weeks (or 3 to 4 weeks if the main symptoms are digestive). According to Tufts University’s veterinary nutrition team, failing to control every single thing that goes into your dog’s mouth can completely invalidate the trial. If symptoms improve on the restricted diet and return when the original food is reintroduced, you have your answer.

Flea Allergy Dermatitis

Flea allergy dermatitis is one of the most common skin conditions in dogs, and it doesn’t take a heavy flea infestation to trigger it. A single flea bite can set off intense itching in a sensitized dog. The allergen isn’t the flea itself but its saliva, which contains a complex mix of enzymes, proteins, and histamine-like compounds that get injected into the skin during a bite.

The reaction is a Type I hypersensitivity, the same rapid-onset mechanism behind other allergic responses. In dogs with flea allergy dermatitis, the damage concentrates in what veterinarians call the “flea triangle,” the area over the lower back, base of the tail, and back of the thighs. You’ll see redness first, followed by hair loss, scabs, and crusty bumps from the dog scratching and chewing at itself. Dogs who live in warm, humid climates are especially vulnerable because fleas thrive year-round in those conditions.

Contact Allergens in the Home

Contact allergies are the least common type but worth knowing about, especially if your dog’s irritation seems concentrated on areas that touch floors or bedding. Household cleaning products are a frequent trigger, as are scented laundry detergents and fabric softeners that linger on blankets and dog beds. Synthetic materials like nylon, vinyl, rubber, plastic (including memory foam), and synthetic dyes can also cause reactions. Even lanolin, the natural oil in wool, irritates some dogs.

Contact allergies typically cause redness and irritation on the belly, paws, chin, or any skin that directly touches the offending material. If you notice your dog reacting after you change cleaning products, switch to a new bed, or wash their bedding with a different detergent, a contact allergy is worth considering.

Breeds With Higher Risk

Any dog can develop allergies, but genetics load the dice. Breeds with a well-documented predisposition include Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, West Highland White Terriers, Boxers, Chinese Shar-Peis, Wirehaired Fox Terriers, Dalmatians, Boston Terriers, Lhasa Apsos, Scottish Terriers, and Shih Tzus. Certain coat color genetics also play a role. Blue-coated Dobermans, for example, are more allergy-prone than their standard-colored counterparts.

The genetic component involves multiple genes that regulate IgE production and immune system balance. Purebred dogs tend to be more affected because selective breeding concentrates these genetic tendencies. If you’re adopting or buying a puppy from a breed on this list, it’s worth budgeting for the possibility of allergy management down the road.

How Veterinarians Identify the Cause

Pinning down exactly what your dog is allergic to often takes time and a process of elimination. For environmental allergies, intradermal skin testing has long been the gold standard. Small amounts of allergens are injected just under the skin, and the vet looks for localized swelling at each injection site. Blood tests that measure allergen-specific IgE levels are also available and less invasive, but historically they’ve carried a higher rate of false positives. Newer blood tests using a specific receptor protein have improved accuracy, though results still vary significantly depending on the allergen being tested. In one comparative study, the sensitivity of blood testing ranged from as low as 19% for certain dust mites to 77% for others when compared against skin testing.

For food allergies, no blood test or skin test is reliable. The elimination diet trial remains the only trustworthy diagnostic method. And for flea allergy dermatitis, the diagnosis is usually made based on symptoms, the distribution of skin lesions, and whether the dog improves with strict flea control. In many cases, dogs have more than one type of allergy at the same time, which is part of what makes diagnosis challenging.
