Bruising becomes more common with age primarily because the skin thins, blood vessels grow fragile, and the protective fat layer beneath the skin shrinks. These changes mean that even a minor bump, or sometimes no noticeable injury at all, can break tiny blood vessels and leave a visible bruise. Around 12 percent of people develop age-related bruising after 50, and that number climbs to 30 percent after age 75.
How Aging Skin Leads to Easier Bruising
The biggest driver is structural change in the skin itself. Over the decades, the connective tissue that gives skin its strength and elasticity breaks down. Collagen, the protein that acts as scaffolding for your skin and blood vessels, decreases steadily. At the same time, you lose subcutaneous fat, the cushioning layer that absorbs impact and protects the blood vessels underneath.
With less collagen supporting them, the small blood vessels in the deeper layer of skin (the dermis) become fragile. They rupture more easily, and the thinner skin above them offers less resistance to force. A bump against a table edge that would barely register in a 30-year-old can produce a dark, spreading bruise in a 70-year-old. In many cases, people don’t remember any injury at all because the force needed to cause a bruise has become so small.
The Role of Sun Damage
Years of sun exposure compound the problem. Ultraviolet light breaks down collagen and elastin fibers in the skin, weakening the walls of blood vessels even further. This is why age-related bruising tends to appear most often on the backs of the hands and the outer surfaces of the forearms, areas that have received the most cumulative sun exposure over a lifetime. The combination of natural aging and decades of UV damage makes these areas especially vulnerable.
Medications That Increase Bruising
Many older adults take medications that make bruising worse, and sometimes this is the primary reason bruises seem to appear out of nowhere. The most common culprits fall into a few categories:
- Blood thinners (anticoagulants): Warfarin, apixaban, rivaroxaban, and heparin all reduce the blood’s ability to clot, so any small vessel break bleeds more freely under the skin.
- Antiplatelet drugs: Aspirin and clopidogrel prevent blood cells from clumping together to form clots, producing a similar effect.
- Over-the-counter pain relievers: Ibuprofen and naproxen also interfere with clotting. Many people take these regularly without realizing they contribute to bruising.
- Corticosteroids: Oral or topical steroids thin the skin over time, removing another layer of protection for blood vessels.
- Certain antidepressants and antibiotics: Some can interfere with normal blood clotting as a side effect.
- Supplements: Ginkgo biloba and some other herbal supplements have a blood-thinning effect that raises bruising risk.
If you’re taking one or more of these medications, the combination of drug effects and age-related skin changes can make bruising significantly more noticeable. This doesn’t necessarily mean the medication needs to change, since many of these drugs serve critical purposes like preventing strokes or heart attacks, but it’s worth discussing with a doctor if bruising becomes excessive.
What Senile Purpura Looks Like
The most common form of age-related bruising has a clinical name: senile purpura (also called Bateman’s purpura). These are flat, dark purple patches that appear on the hands and forearms, often without any obvious injury. They look different from a typical bruise. The skin around them usually appears thin and somewhat translucent, and you may be able to see veins more clearly than in other areas.
New patches appear seemingly at random, then fade over several days. As they heal, they often leave behind a brownish discoloration from iron deposits in the skin. This staining can take weeks or months to clear, and in some cases it becomes permanent. Over time, the forearms and hands of someone with senile purpura can develop a mottled, discolored appearance even between active bruises.
Senile purpura is not dangerous. It’s a cosmetic issue driven by the same structural skin changes described above, combined with chronic sun exposure. But its appearance can be alarming if you don’t know what it is.
Nutritional Deficiencies
Vitamin deficiencies are a less common but real cause of easy bruising. Vitamin C is essential for collagen production, and a severe deficiency (scurvy) causes widespread bruising because the body can’t maintain its blood vessel walls. While full-blown scurvy is rare, mild vitamin C insufficiency is more common in older adults, particularly those with limited diets or reduced appetite. Vitamin K, which plays a key role in blood clotting, can also contribute to bruising when levels are low.
How Long Bruises Take to Heal
Most bruises in older adults fade within about two weeks. The typical progression moves from dark purple or red to blue, then green and yellow as the body reabsorbs the trapped blood. Because the skin is thinner and circulation may be slower, this process generally takes longer than it would in a younger person. Bruises that persist beyond two weeks, or that seem to be getting larger rather than fading, are worth bringing to a doctor’s attention, as they can signal a clotting problem or other underlying condition.
Reducing Bruises in Daily Life
You can’t reverse the aging process in your skin, but a few practical steps reduce the frequency and severity of bruising. Keeping skin well moisturized with a thick cream helps maintain its integrity. Long sleeves and long pants provide a physical barrier, and wearing two layers on the forearms during activities like gardening or yard work adds extra protection in the area most prone to bruising.
Sun protection matters too. Broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and a wide-brimmed hat slow further UV damage to the skin’s connective tissue. This won’t undo decades of past exposure, but it prevents the problem from accelerating. Padding sharp furniture edges, keeping walkways clear, and ensuring good lighting at home also help by reducing the minor bumps and collisions that cause bruises in the first place.
