Cataracts in dogs develop when proteins inside the lens clump together and block light from reaching the retina. The most common causes are genetics, diabetes, aging, eye trauma, and chronic inflammation. Some dogs are born with cataracts, while others develop them over months or years depending on the underlying trigger.
Inherited Cataracts
Genetics is the single most common reason dogs develop cataracts. Dozens of breeds carry hereditary risk, and affected dogs should not be bred. Some of the best-studied genetic links involve Boston Terriers, French Bulldogs, and Staffordshire Bull Terriers, all of which can carry a recessive mutation for juvenile hereditary cataracts. A dog needs two copies of this mutation for cataracts to develop. In these breeds, lens clouding typically starts before age 1 and progresses to full blindness by age 2 to 3.
Other breeds with elevated cataract risk include Cocker Spaniels, Miniature Schnauzers, Labrador Retrievers, Siberian Huskies, and Australian Shepherds. The age of onset varies widely by breed and the specific gene involved. Some hereditary cataracts appear in puppyhood, others not until middle age. Genetic testing through labs like UC Davis can identify carriers in certain breeds before breeding decisions are made.
Diabetes
Diabetes is the second most significant cause of cataracts in dogs, and the timeline is fast. Most diabetic dogs will develop cataracts, and the lens can go from clear to completely opaque in a matter of weeks.
The mechanism is straightforward. When blood sugar stays high, excess glucose floods the lens. An enzyme inside the lens converts that glucose into a sugar alcohol called sorbitol, which the lens cannot easily flush out. Sorbitol draws water into the lens by osmosis, swelling the lens fibers and disrupting their precise, transparent structure. The result is a dense, white cataract that blocks vision entirely. This process affects both eyes and progresses rapidly once it starts, which is why early and consistent blood sugar management matters so much for diabetic dogs.
Age-Related Changes
Older dogs commonly develop a bluish-gray haze in their eyes that owners mistake for cataracts. In most cases, this is actually nuclear sclerosis, a normal aging change that typically appears after age 8 to 10. The lens grows new fiber layers throughout life, and over time the center of the lens becomes compressed and denser. This creates a cloudy appearance but does not significantly impair vision.
True age-related cataracts do occur in senior dogs, but they’re less common than nuclear sclerosis. The difference matters: nuclear sclerosis rarely needs treatment, while a mature cataract blocks 100% of the lens and causes significant vision loss. A veterinarian can distinguish between the two by dilating the pupil and examining the lens with specialized lighting. If you can still see the back of the eye through the cloudiness, it’s more likely nuclear sclerosis.
Trauma to the Eye
A puncture wound, a scratch from a cat’s claw, a collision with a sharp object, or blunt force to the head can all rupture the lens capsule, the thin membrane that holds the lens together. When this membrane breaks, lens proteins spill into the interior of the eye. The immune system treats those proteins as foreign material and launches an inflammatory response, a condition called phacoclastic uveitis. The inflammation itself causes further damage to the lens, and the disrupted lens fibers lose their transparency.
Traumatic cataracts typically affect only the injured eye. They can develop within days of the injury and often come with other signs of eye damage, including redness, squinting, and swelling.
Chronic Eye Inflammation
Uveitis, which is inflammation of the vascular tissue deep inside the eye, can trigger cataract formation even without a traumatic injury. Infections, immune-mediated diseases, and tick-borne illnesses can all cause chronic uveitis. The inflammatory chemicals circulating inside the eye gradually damage lens proteins and alter the fluid environment the lens depends on to stay clear.
The relationship between cataracts and inflammation also runs in the other direction. As cataracts mature, they leak small amounts of protein that provoke further inflammation. Every mature and hypermature cataract causes some degree of lens-induced uveitis, which means the longer a cataract sits untreated, the more inflammation builds inside the eye.
Congenital Cataracts
Some puppies are born with cataracts due to problems that occurred during fetal development. One well-documented cause is a condition where the temporary blood vessel network that nourishes the developing lens fails to dissolve before birth. This leftover tissue, mainly reported in dogs, disrupts normal lens formation and can cause cataracts that range from small and stable to progressive and vision-threatening. The severity varies: mild cases may only cloud a small area of the lens, while severe cases can lead to complications like glaucoma or retinal detachment.
Nutritional imbalances in newborn puppies can also cause cataracts. Orphaned puppies raised on certain milk replacers have developed lens opacities, likely due to differences in amino acid or antioxidant content compared to the mother’s milk.
Radiation Exposure
Dogs undergoing radiation therapy for tumors in the nasal, oral, or brain regions can develop cataracts as a side effect. The lens is particularly sensitive to radiation damage. Cataracts from radiation typically appear 6 to 12 months after treatment and can lead to blindness in the affected eye. Veterinary oncologists try to shield the eyes during treatment, but complete avoidance isn’t always possible when the tumor is close to the eye socket.
How Cataracts Progress
Regardless of the cause, cataracts are classified by how much of the lens they cover. An incipient cataract affects less than 15% of the lens and often causes no noticeable vision problems. Your dog may navigate the house, catch treats, and seem perfectly normal. An immature cataract covers 16% to 99% of the lens and starts to interfere with sight, particularly in dim lighting.
A mature cataract clouds the entire lens and causes significant vision loss. At this stage, the lens leaks enough protein to trigger inflammation inside the eye in every case. A hypermature cataract is one that has begun to shrink and break down, sometimes partially restoring some light passage but also increasing the risk of complications like glaucoma.
The speed of progression depends entirely on the cause. Diabetic cataracts can go from invisible to mature in weeks. Hereditary cataracts in predisposed breeds may take one to two years. Age-related cataracts often progress slowly over many months. Recognizing the early signs, such as a whitish spot in the pupil, bumping into furniture in unfamiliar settings, or reluctance to jump, gives you more options for managing the condition before complications set in.
