Dark spots under the eyes usually come from one of three things: excess pigment in the skin, blood vessels showing through thin skin, or shadows cast by hollowing beneath the eye. Most people have a combination of these, which is why under-eye darkness can be stubborn and hard to pin down. Understanding which type you’re dealing with is the first step toward knowing what, if anything, will help.
Why Under-Eye Skin Is Different
The skin beneath your eyes is some of the thinnest on your entire body, with very little subcutaneous fat underneath it. That thinness means the structures below, including blood vessels, muscle, and bone, are far more visible here than almost anywhere else on your face. The orbicularis oculi muscle, which encircles each eye, sits right beneath this delicate skin. When blood pools in the tiny veins around that muscle, or when pigment accumulates in the skin itself, the effect is amplified in a way it simply wouldn’t be on thicker skin like your cheeks or forehead.
The Three Types of Dark Circles
Dermatologists generally classify under-eye darkness into three categories based on what’s actually causing the discoloration. Many people have features of more than one type.
Pigmented Dark Circles
These appear brown or black and result from excess melanin production in the eyelid skin. The pigment can sit in the upper layers of skin (epidermal) or deeper within the dermis, or both. Pigmented circles are especially common in people with darker skin tones because melanin-producing cells in darker skin contain roughly double the concentration of melanin compared to lighter skin. That extra melanin protects against sun damage and skin cancer, but it also makes the skin more reactive to triggers that increase pigmentation.
Vascular Dark Circles
These look blue, pink, or purple. They happen when blood vessels beneath the skin become dilated or congested, or when the skin is thin enough to let the underlying vascular network show through. Sometimes, tiny blood vessels leak and the breakdown products of hemoglobin, including bilirubin and biliverdin, leave a visible stain in the surrounding tissue. You can test for this type by gently pressing the skin: if the color fades temporarily, blood flow is a major contributor.
Structural (Shadow-Based) Dark Circles
These aren’t caused by pigment or blood at all. Instead, they’re shadows created by the contours of your face, particularly a groove that runs from the inner corner of the eye toward the cheek called the tear trough. If you stretch the skin gently and the darkness disappears, you’re likely seeing a shadow rather than true discoloration. This type becomes more pronounced with age as fat pads shift and bone resorbs, deepening the hollow beneath the eye.
Genetics and Skin Tone
Family history is one of the strongest predictors of under-eye darkness. If your parents had prominent dark circles, you’re more likely to as well. This can show up as early as childhood and has nothing to do with health or lifestyle.
Skin tone plays a significant role. In medium to dark skin types, inconsistent pigmentation is one of the most common signs of both aging and sun exposure. The melanin-producing cells in darker skin are larger, more evenly distributed, and packed with more pigment. This means any trigger that stimulates melanin production, whether it’s sun exposure, friction, or inflammation, tends to leave a more visible mark. People with lighter, more translucent skin, on the other hand, are more prone to the vascular type because their thinner skin reveals the blood vessels beneath.
How Aging Deepens Dark Circles
Several changes happen simultaneously as you age, and they all make under-eye darkness worse. The fat pads that normally cushion the area beneath your eyes shrink and shift downward. The ligaments holding those fat pads in place weaken. The bone of the eye socket gradually resorbs. Together, these changes deepen the tear trough, creating a hollow that casts a visible shadow.
At the same time, the skin itself loses collagen and becomes even thinner, making blood vessels and muscle more apparent. The orbital septum, a thin membrane that holds fat behind the eye socket, can also weaken, allowing fat to bulge forward in some spots while the surrounding area appears sunken. This combination of puffiness above the tear trough and hollowness below it creates a contrast that makes dark circles look worse than the pigment or vessels alone would suggest.
Allergies and Sinus Congestion
If your dark circles seem seasonal or come with a stuffy nose, allergies may be the driver. When your immune system reacts to an allergen, the lining inside your nose swells. That swelling compresses the small veins draining the sinus cavities, and since those veins run close to the surface of the skin under your eyes, the backed-up blood makes the area look darker and puffier. This effect is common enough that it has its own name: allergic shiners.
The cycle often gets worse because itchy, irritated eyes lead to rubbing, which introduces another problem entirely: friction-related pigmentation.
Inflammation, Rubbing, and Skin Irritation
Any inflammation in the under-eye area can trigger a process called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. When the skin is inflamed, whether from eczema, contact dermatitis, or simple repeated rubbing, melanin-producing cells kick into overdrive. They produce extra pigment and transfer it to surrounding skin cells. If the inflammation goes deep enough to damage the base layer of skin, melanin can leak into the deeper dermis, where it gets trapped by immune cells. Dermal pigment is harder to treat and takes much longer to fade than surface-level pigmentation.
This is why habitual eye rubbing, aggressive makeup removal, or chronic eczema around the eyes can gradually darken the skin over months and years, even after the original irritation is gone.
Sun Exposure
Ultraviolet radiation stimulates melanin production everywhere on the face, but the thin under-eye skin is particularly vulnerable. In people with medium to dark skin tones, sun-driven pigmentation changes (sometimes called chronic hyperpigmentary photodamage) are one of the most common visible signs of aging. Sunglasses and broad-spectrum sunscreen applied to the orbital area can slow this process, though many people skip sunscreen in this zone because it stings or migrates into the eyes.
Sleep, Stress, and Lifestyle Factors
Sleep deprivation is the cause most people assume first, but the evidence is surprisingly thin. One study that photographed participants after normal sleep and after sleep deprivation, then digitally measured periorbital darkness, found no significant difference in the actual darkness of the under-eye area between the two conditions. What poor sleep does reliably cause is paler skin overall, which increases the contrast between the rest of your face and the naturally darker under-eye zone. It can also cause fluid retention and puffiness, which creates shadows.
Smoking and heavy alcohol use are associated with under-eye darkness, likely through a combination of dehydration, impaired circulation, and accelerated collagen breakdown. Stress tends to worsen the appearance indirectly: it disrupts sleep, increases cortisol, and in many people triggers behaviors like eye rubbing that contribute to pigmentation.
What Helps, Based on the Cause
Because under-eye darkness has such different root causes, no single treatment works for everyone. Identifying your type matters.
- For pigmented circles: Topical treatments that reduce melanin production are the standard first-line approach. Ingredients like vitamin C, retinoids, and brightening agents applied consistently over weeks to months can gradually lighten surface-level pigment. For deeper or more stubborn pigmentation, dermatologists may recommend chemical peels or targeted laser treatments as a second step.
- For vascular circles: Improving circulation helps. Cold compresses temporarily constrict blood vessels. Managing underlying allergies or sinus congestion reduces venous pooling. Some people see improvement with topical products containing caffeine, which briefly tightens blood vessels.
- For structural circles: Topical products do very little for shadow-based darkness because the problem is volume loss, not pigment. Injectable fillers placed in the tear trough can restore lost volume and reduce the hollow. This is the most direct fix for the shadowing type, though it requires a skilled practitioner because the under-eye area is technically demanding.
Sun protection matters regardless of type. UV exposure worsens pigmentation, thins the skin further, and accelerates the collagen loss that deepens the tear trough. A broad-spectrum sunscreen and sunglasses are the simplest preventive measures available. Avoiding unnecessary friction, including aggressive rubbing when removing makeup or drying your face, helps prevent the slow accumulation of post-inflammatory pigment that makes all types of dark circles worse over time.
