What Causes Mange in Foxes? Mites, Signs & Risks

Mange in foxes is caused by a tiny parasitic mite called Sarcoptes scabiei that burrows into the outer layer of the skin, triggering intense itching, hair loss, and thick crusty sores. The fox-specific variant, Sarcoptes scabiei var. vulpes, spreads primarily through direct contact between foxes and can devastate local populations, sometimes cutting numbers in half during severe outbreaks.

The Mite Behind the Disease

Sarcoptes scabiei is a microscopic, eight-legged parasite invisible to the naked eye. After landing on a fox, a fertilized female mite burrows into the outermost skin layer and begins tunneling in a serpentine pattern, laying two to three eggs per day as she goes. She stays in that burrow for the rest of her life, which lasts one to two months, continuously extending her tunnel and depositing eggs.

The eggs hatch in three to four days. The larvae that emerge have only six legs at first and dig their own tiny pockets in the skin to molt. Over the next several days they progress through two nymph stages before becoming adults with eight legs. A single mating event leaves a female fertile for life, and the cycle repeats. This means a fox that picks up even a small number of mites can become heavily infested within weeks.

How Foxes Catch Mange

Direct contact between foxes is the primary route of transmission. Mating, play fighting, grooming, and raising pups in close quarters all create opportunities for mites to move from one animal to another. Research tracking GPS-collared red foxes found that diseased foxes were detected more frequently near other diseased foxes, reinforcing that movement and social contact drive the spread.

Shared dens play a supporting role. Mites can survive off a host for multiple days in den soil, so a fox using a burrow recently occupied by a mangy animal can pick up mites without ever encountering the infected fox directly. Temperature matters: mites survive longest at cool temperatures around 4°C (39°F), persisting up to 13 days. At freezing temperatures they die within about four hours, and at warmer temperatures (18–30°C) they last no more than six to eight days. This means dens in cool, sheltered conditions pose a higher contamination risk.

Urban and suburban fox populations face particular danger. Higher densities, more shared resting sites, and frequent territorial encounters all increase the odds of transmission. A mange epidemic among endangered San Joaquin kit foxes in Bakersfield, California reduced the population by roughly 50% between 2013 and 2020. Family groups sharing dens meant that once one member contracted mange, the rest of the household typically followed.

What Happens Inside the Fox’s Body

The damage from mange is not just the mites digging through skin. It’s the fox’s own immune system overreacting to them. As mites burrow, they leave behind eggs, feces, and saliva that trigger allergic responses. About 94% of red foxes with mange show signs of an immediate allergic reaction in the skin, a much higher rate than some other species like coyotes (40%). This intense immune response causes the severe inflammation and itching that define the disease.

The itching drives foxes to scratch and bite at their skin relentlessly, which damages the skin barrier and opens the door to bacterial and yeast infections. Scabietic animals are significantly more likely to develop secondary bacterial colonization compared to healthy ones. When yeast also takes hold, the disease escalates further: animals with detectable yeast infections score significantly worse for hair loss, skin condition, and overall body condition.

How Mange Progresses

The incubation period ranges from 10 days to 8 weeks, depending on how many mites the fox picked up and its overall health. Early signs include small raised bumps on the skin, often starting on the ears, face, elbows, and belly where fur is thinner. Within weeks, the constant scratching transforms these bumps into thick, crusted sores.

As the infestation worsens, foxes lose large patches of fur. The exposed skin becomes thickened, wrinkled, and covered in a buildup of oily, flaky crust. Oozing sores develop where secondary infections take hold. A fox in the advanced stages of mange is often emaciated, nearly bald, and visibly suffering. Without treatment, severe mange is frequently lethal. Foxes die from a combination of exposure (having lost their insulating fur), dehydration, starvation from being too debilitated to hunt, and overwhelming secondary infections.

Risk to Humans and Pets

Sarcoptic mange is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can pass from animals to people. If you handle an infected fox or even touch contaminated bedding, the mites can burrow into your skin and cause itchy, irritated bumps, typically on the forearms, chest, abdomen, and thighs. The good news: fox mites strongly prefer fox hosts. In humans the infestation is self-limiting because the mites cannot complete their life cycle on human skin. Symptoms are usually temporary and resolve on their own, though the itching can be intense and scratching can lead to secondary bacterial skin infections.

Dogs are more vulnerable. Sarcoptes scabiei readily infects domestic dogs, causing papular lesions, intense itching, scaling, crusting, hair loss, and weight loss. A dog that investigates a fox den or has contact with a mangy fox can develop a full-blown infestation that requires veterinary treatment. Keeping dogs away from fox dens and known fox resting spots reduces this risk.

How Mange Is Treated in Foxes

Wild foxes obviously can’t walk into a vet clinic, so treatment depends on whether the animal is in captivity or free-ranging. In wildlife rehabilitation settings, the most common and effective approach is an anti-parasitic medication delivered by injection, typically given two to three times at 14-day intervals. The repeat doses are necessary because the medication kills live mites and larvae but not eggs, so treatment must continue long enough to catch newly hatched mites before they can reproduce.

For free-ranging foxes, delivery gets creative. Wildlife managers have used remote dart guns to inject medication, placed medicated bait near dens, and even rigged burrow entrances with small containers of topical medication that foxes absorb as they squeeze past. One method involves attaching a plastic flap with a small cup of medication directly outside a burrow entrance so the fox contacts the drug every time it enters or exits. These approaches have had mixed success. Treating free-ranging foxes consistently enough to complete a full course remains one of the biggest challenges in managing wildlife mange outbreaks.

Foxes that receive adequate treatment and supportive care can recover fully, regrowing fur and regaining body condition over several weeks to months. Without intervention, particularly in winter when fur loss is most dangerous, the prognosis for severely affected wild foxes is poor.
