What Causes Under-Eye Bags: Aging, Sleep, and More

Eye bags form when fat, fluid, or both push forward beneath the lower eyelid, creating a puffy or swollen appearance. The skin under your eyes is some of the thinnest on your body, so even small changes in the tissue underneath become visible quickly. Several factors drive this process, from normal aging to everyday habits you can change.

How Eye Bags Physically Form

Your eyeball sits in a bony socket cushioned by pads of fat. A thin membrane called the orbital septum holds that fat in place, acting like a retaining wall. When the septum weakens, fat herniates forward and presses against the skin of your lower eyelid, creating a visible bulge. This is the structural basis of permanent or semi-permanent eye bags, and it’s distinct from temporary puffiness caused by fluid.

The second mechanism is fluid accumulation. The under-eye area has very little structural support compared to the rest of your face, so excess fluid gravitates there easily. When you lie flat overnight, fluid distributes toward your head and settles in that loosely supported tissue, which is why eye bags often look worse in the morning and improve as the day goes on and gravity pulls fluid downward.

Why Aging Is the Biggest Factor

Your body produces less collagen each year starting in your mid-twenties. Collagen is the protein that keeps skin firm and elastic, and when production slows, the skin under your eyes gradually thins and loses its ability to hold underlying structures in place. At the same time, the connective tissue that forms the orbital septum weakens with age, allowing the fat pads behind it to push forward. The combination of thinner skin on top and bulging fat underneath is what makes eye bags progressively more noticeable in your 40s, 50s, and beyond.

Elastin, the fiber that lets skin snap back after being stretched, also degrades over time. Once these fibers break down, the skin sags and can’t recover its shape. This is a one-way process: your body doesn’t efficiently replace damaged elastin, so the changes accumulate year after year.

Sleep, Stress, and Fluid Pooling

Poor sleep triggers a chain reaction that shows up under your eyes. Sleep deprivation raises your body’s stress hormones and increases levels of inflammatory compounds that make capillary walls more permeable. When capillaries leak more fluid than usual, that fluid collects in the loose tissue beneath your lower lids. At the same time, your lymphatic system, which normally drains excess fluid from tissues, works less efficiently when you’re sleep-deprived. The result is a self-reinforcing cycle: worse sleep leads to more inflammation, more fluid leakage, and puffier under-eye bags each morning.

Lying flat for several hours compounds the problem. Gravity pulls fluid toward your face all night, and the under-eye area absorbs more of it than surrounding tissues because there’s less structural resistance. Sleeping with your head slightly elevated can reduce the amount of fluid that pools there overnight.

Salt, Alcohol, and Crying

Eating a high-sodium meal in the evening is one of the most reliable triggers for morning puffiness. When you consume excess salt, your body retains water to keep sodium concentrations balanced. That extra water gets pulled into cells and surrounding tissues, and the thin-skinned under-eye area shows it first. Reducing sodium intake, particularly in the hours before bed, noticeably reduces puffiness for many people.

Alcohol works through a similar but slightly different path. It dehydrates you overall while simultaneously causing blood vessels to dilate, which increases fluid leakage into tissues. Crying also causes under-eye swelling because tears contain salt, and the physical act of rubbing your eyes triggers local inflammation. In all three cases, the puffiness is temporary and typically resolves within several hours.

Sun Damage and Smoking

Ultraviolet radiation directly damages the elastin fibers in your skin. Over time, this causes the skin to sag, stretch, and lose its ability to bounce back. Because the under-eye skin is already the thinnest on your face, it’s especially vulnerable to UV-related breakdown. Years of unprotected sun exposure accelerate the same structural weakening that aging causes naturally, making eye bags appear earlier and look more pronounced.

Smoking compounds this damage through multiple pathways. The reactive oxygen species in tobacco smoke degrade collagen and elastin in the skin’s structural matrix while simultaneously reducing your body’s ability to produce new collagen. Smokers show reduced collagen synthesis and accelerated breakdown of the extracellular molecules that keep skin firm. The effect isn’t limited to the face, but it’s most visible there because facial skin is thin and constantly exposed. Studies have identified characteristic patterns of wrinkling and sagging around the eyes in long-term smokers.

Allergies and Sinus Congestion

Allergic reactions cause the blood vessels beneath your eyes to dilate and leak fluid into surrounding tissue. If you notice your eye bags worsen during allergy season or after exposure to pet dander, dust, or pollen, histamine-driven inflammation is likely the cause. Nasal congestion from allergies or sinus infections can also restrict drainage from the veins around your eyes, causing blood to pool and the area to appear swollen and darker. Treating the underlying allergy often reduces the puffiness significantly.

Genetics and Family Patterns

Some people develop noticeable eye bags in their 20s or 30s despite good sleep, low sodium intake, and no smoking history. Genetics determines the baseline thickness of your under-eye skin, the size and position of your orbital fat pads, and how quickly your connective tissue loses strength. If your parents had prominent eye bags, you’re more likely to develop them earlier. In these cases, the bags are structural rather than fluid-based, meaning lifestyle changes can reduce puffiness on top of the bags but won’t eliminate the underlying bulge.

Temporary Puffiness vs. Permanent Bags

The distinction matters because the causes and solutions differ. Temporary puffiness from salt, alcohol, crying, poor sleep, or allergies involves fluid retention. It fluctuates day to day, looks worse in the morning, and improves when the underlying trigger is removed. Applying a cold compress for 10 to 15 minutes constricts blood vessels and speeds fluid drainage, which is why cold spoons and chilled eye masks provide short-term relief.

Permanent eye bags involve structural changes: fat prolapse through a weakened septum, loss of skin elasticity, or both. These don’t respond to cold compresses or dietary changes because the problem isn’t fluid. They tend to worsen gradually over years and remain consistent throughout the day. Cosmetic procedures that remove or reposition the herniated fat are the only way to eliminate truly structural bags, though skincare ingredients that support collagen production can slow the progression of skin thinning.

Most people dealing with noticeable eye bags have some combination of both. The structural component creates a baseline, and fluid retention, sleep quality, and other daily variables determine how much worse the bags look on any given morning.
