Burning eyes are most often caused by dryness, whether from environmental irritants, prolonged screen use, or an underlying condition affecting your tear film. The sensation can range from a mild sting to an intense, persistent burn, and the cause usually falls into one of a few common categories.
Dry Eyes and Tear Film Instability
Your eyes stay comfortable because a thin layer of tears keeps the surface lubricated and protected. When that tear film breaks down, either because you’re not producing enough tears or because they’re evaporating too quickly, the exposed nerve endings on the surface of your eye become irritated. That’s the burning you feel.
What makes chronic dry eye tricky is that the problem can feed itself. When the surface stays dry and irritated over time, the sensory nerves in the eye can become hypersensitive through a process similar to what happens with chronic pain elsewhere in the body. The nerves essentially learn to fire more easily, which means the burning can persist or worsen even when the original trigger improves. This is one reason some people with dry eye feel a constant burn despite using drops regularly.
Screen Time and Reduced Blinking
If your eyes burn most at the end of a workday, your screen is a likely culprit. When you focus on a computer, phone, or tablet, your blink rate drops by about 66%. Blinking is what spreads fresh tears across the eye’s surface, so fewer blinks means your tear film dries out faster. The result is that familiar end-of-day dryness, grittiness, and burning that disappears after you step away from the screen for a while.
The fix is straightforward but easy to forget: look away from your screen every 20 minutes or so, focus on something distant, and blink deliberately a few times. Positioning your monitor slightly below eye level also helps, because it narrows the opening between your eyelids and slows tear evaporation.
Smoke, Pollution, and Airborne Irritants
Your eyes are directly exposed to the air around you, which makes them vulnerable to whatever is floating in it. Wildfire smoke is one of the most common triggers for sudden eye burning, and it contains thousands of compounds: fine particulate matter, heavy metals, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ozone, and volatile organic compounds. Even when you can’t see visible smoke, fine particles (PM2.5 and PM10) in polluted air are small enough to irritate the eye’s surface and destabilize your tear film.
Other common airborne irritants include cigarette smoke, fumes from household cleaning products, biomass burning (like wood stoves or agricultural fires), and vehicle exhaust. If the burning starts suddenly in a new environment and goes away when you leave, the air quality is almost certainly the cause.
Allergic Conjunctivitis
Allergies can cause both itching and burning in the eyes, though itching tends to be the dominant symptom. When your immune system encounters an allergen like pollen, pet dander, or dust mites, it treats the substance as a threat and mounts an inflammatory response. That response releases histamine and other chemicals into the tissue around your eyes, causing redness, swelling, watering, and that itchy-burning combination.
A key clue that allergies are behind your burning eyes: both eyes are affected equally, and you also have watery discharge rather than thick or colored discharge. Seasonal patterns help too. If the burning shows up every spring or fall, or flares when you’re around a specific animal, an allergic trigger is likely.
Blepharitis
Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelids, and it’s one of the most underrecognized causes of burning eyes. The eyelid margins become swollen and irritated, often with crusty flakes at the base of the lashes. Because the oil glands in your eyelids play a critical role in stabilizing your tear film, inflammation there disrupts the entire system. The result is a gritty, burning, stinging sensation that tends to be worst in the morning.
Blepharitis is chronic for most people, meaning it doesn’t fully go away but can be managed. Warm compresses held over closed eyelids for five to ten minutes help soften clogged oil in the glands, and gently cleaning the lash line with diluted baby shampoo or a commercial lid scrub removes the debris that fuels the inflammation cycle.
UV Exposure and Photokeratitis
Intense ultraviolet light can literally sunburn the surface of your eye, a condition called photokeratitis. The burning, tearing, and light sensitivity typically hit six to 24 hours after exposure, which is why people don’t always connect the symptom to the cause. Most cases resolve within 48 hours.
Direct sunlight is the obvious source, but reflected UV is often more dangerous because it catches you off guard. Snow, ice, water, sand, and concrete all bounce UV rays upward into your eyes. Tanning beds, arc welding equipment, halogen lamps, and certain medical or disinfection lights can also cause photokeratitis. Welders know this as “arc eye” or “welder’s flash.” Wearing UV-blocking sunglasses or proper protective eyewear prevents it entirely.
Chemical and Irritant Exposure
Getting a cleaning product, pool chlorine, sunscreen, or any chemical near your eyes triggers an immediate burning response. This is your corneal nerves reacting to a substance that doesn’t belong there. For mild household irritants, flushing the eye with clean water for 15 to 20 minutes usually resolves the burning. For stronger chemicals, especially anything alkaline like oven cleaner, drain opener, or industrial solvents, the damage can progress rapidly and requires emergency care.
Relieving the Burn at Home
Artificial tears are the first line of relief for most causes of burning eyes. These over-the-counter drops work by supplementing your natural tear film with lubricating compounds like polyethylene glycol, carboxymethylcellulose, or glycerin. They come in dozens of brand-name formulations, but the basic function is the same: coat the eye surface, reduce friction, and calm irritated nerves.
One thing to watch for is the preservative in multi-dose bottles. If you’re using drops more than four times a day, switch to preservative-free single-use vials. The preservatives in standard bottles can themselves irritate sensitive eyes with frequent use, which creates the frustrating situation of your eye drops making the burning worse over time.
Cool compresses, staying hydrated, and using a humidifier in dry indoor environments all help as well. For allergy-related burning, antihistamine eye drops provide more targeted relief than plain artificial tears.
When Burning Eyes Signal Something Serious
Most burning eyes are uncomfortable but not dangerous. A few combinations of symptoms, however, need prompt attention. Burning accompanied by sudden vision loss, severe pain that radiates to your head, or extreme sensitivity to light can indicate conditions like acute glaucoma or internal eye inflammation that require treatment within hours to prevent permanent damage. Thick yellow or green discharge alongside burning suggests a bacterial infection that needs prescription treatment.
Redness and burning in only one eye is generally more concerning than both eyes being affected, since it often points to a localized problem rather than general dryness or allergies. And if burning eyes appear alongside neurological symptoms like confusion, double vision, facial drooping, or a stiff neck with fever, that combination can signal a systemic emergency unrelated to the eyes themselves.
