A racing heart happens when your body demands more from your cardiovascular system than usual, or when something disrupts the electrical signals that control your heartbeat. Clinically, a resting heart rate above 100 beats per minute is considered tachycardia. But plenty of people feel their heart racing even below that threshold, and the causes range from a cup of coffee to an underlying medical condition.
Your Nervous System Sets the Pace
Your heart rate is controlled by your autonomic nervous system, which operates without any conscious effort on your part. It has two branches that work like a gas pedal and a brake. The sympathetic branch speeds things up during stress or physical demand, triggering what’s commonly called the fight-or-flight response. The parasympathetic branch slows things down during rest and digestion. When these two systems are in balance, your heart rate stays steady. When something tips the balance toward the sympathetic side, your heart speeds up.
Almost every cause of a racing heart works through this system, either by activating the gas pedal, releasing the brake, or both at once.
Stress, Anxiety, and Panic
Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people notice their heart racing, and the mechanism is straightforward. When you feel threatened or uneasy, your autonomic nervous system kicks into fight-or-flight mode, flooding your body with adrenaline and increasing your heart rate. Your body can’t distinguish between a real physical danger and a stressful email from your boss. The response is the same.
During a panic attack, this response can be especially intense. Your heart may pound at 120 to 150 beats per minute, and because you’re sitting still when it happens, the sensation feels alarming. That alarm can feed back into more anxiety, which keeps the heart rate elevated. Many people who show up at an emergency room convinced they’re having a heart attack are actually experiencing a panic attack. The racing heart is real, but the cause is neurological, not cardiac.
Caffeine, Nicotine, and Alcohol
Caffeine is a stimulant that triggers adrenaline release and activates your nervous system, temporarily increasing both heart rate and blood pressure. Most people tolerate moderate amounts without issue, but sensitivity varies widely. If you’ve noticed your heart racing after coffee, energy drinks, or pre-workout supplements, caffeine is the likely culprit.
Nicotine works similarly, stimulating the sympathetic nervous system and raising heart rate with each dose. Alcohol is more complex. While small amounts may not noticeably affect heart rate, heavier drinking can trigger irregular rhythms. Binge drinking is a well-known trigger for atrial fibrillation, sometimes called “holiday heart” because it often shows up after weekends or celebrations involving heavy alcohol use.
Dehydration and Low Blood Volume
When you’re dehydrated, you have less fluid in your bloodstream. Less blood returning to the heart means each heartbeat pumps out a smaller volume. To compensate and keep enough blood flowing to your organs, your heart beats faster. This is why your pulse climbs noticeably during hot weather, after exercise without enough fluids, or during an illness with vomiting or diarrhea.
The compensation has limits. Your body can only increase heart rate so much before the system starts to fail. Mild dehydration might bump your resting heart rate by 10 to 20 beats per minute. Severe dehydration can push it much higher and cause lightheadedness, fainting, or worse.
Low Iron and Anemia
Iron is essential for building hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout your body. When you’re iron-deficient, your blood carries less oxygen per trip. Your heart compensates by pumping faster, trying to deliver the same amount of oxygen with fewer resources. This is why a fast heartbeat is one of the hallmark signs of iron-deficiency anemia, along with fatigue, pale skin, and feeling winded during mild activity.
If your heart seems to race more than it used to, especially with fatigue or exercise intolerance, low iron is worth investigating with a simple blood test.
Low Magnesium
Magnesium plays a specific role in your heart’s electrical system. It helps regulate the timing of signals passing through the atrioventricular node, which acts as a gateway between the upper and lower chambers of your heart. When magnesium levels are too low, that gateway opens and closes faster than it should, speeding up your heartbeat. Common causes of low magnesium include poor diet, heavy alcohol use, certain medications, and chronic digestive conditions that reduce absorption.
Thyroid Problems
An overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) is a classic medical cause of a racing heart. Excess thyroid hormone doesn’t just speed up your metabolism. It increases the number and sensitivity of receptors on your heart that respond to adrenaline. So even though your actual adrenaline levels may be normal, your heart reacts as though there’s far more of it circulating. The result is a state that mimics chronic adrenaline excess: a fast resting heart rate, tremor, weight loss, heat intolerance, and a general feeling of being “revved up.”
Hyperthyroidism is diagnosed with a blood test and is very treatable, but left unchecked it can strain the heart over time.
Electrical Problems in the Heart
Sometimes a racing heart isn’t a normal response to stress or illness. It’s caused by a glitch in the heart’s own electrical wiring. Two of the most common types are supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) and atrial fibrillation.
Supraventricular Tachycardia
SVT occurs when an abnormal electrical signal fires from above the ventricles, typically in or near the node between the upper and lower chambers. This signal overrides the heart’s normal pacemaker and drives the heart at a rapid, regular rhythm that can reach 200 beats per minute. Episodes often start and stop suddenly. You might feel completely fine one moment, then your heart is pounding out of your chest, then it abruptly returns to normal. SVT is usually not life-threatening, but the episodes can be frightening and debilitating.
Atrial Fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation is different. Instead of a single rogue signal, the upper chambers of the heart fire chaotically at rates exceeding 300 times per minute. The upper chambers quiver instead of contracting properly, and the lower chambers beat irregularly in response. The hallmark of atrial fibrillation is an irregular pulse. Rather than a steady fast beat, it feels erratic and unpredictable. Atrial fibrillation becomes more common with age and carries a higher risk of stroke, which is why it needs medical attention even if symptoms feel mild.
Other Common Triggers
Several everyday situations cause a racing heart that’s completely normal:
- Exercise: Your heart rate rises to meet increased oxygen demand. This is healthy and expected.
- Fever: Heart rate typically increases about 10 beats per minute for every degree (Fahrenheit) of body temperature elevation.
- Medications: Decongestants, asthma inhalers, and some ADHD medications stimulate the nervous system and can raise heart rate.
- Hormonal shifts: Pregnancy, menstruation, and menopause can all cause noticeable heart rate changes due to shifts in blood volume and hormone levels.
- Standing up quickly: A sudden drop in blood pressure when you stand forces your heart to speed up to maintain blood flow to your brain.
When a Racing Heart Needs Attention
A racing heart that happens during exercise, after caffeine, or during a stressful moment and then settles down is usually nothing to worry about. The pattern that deserves attention is a racing heart that comes on without an obvious trigger, happens repeatedly, or comes with other symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, or severe dizziness. Episodes lasting more than a few minutes, especially with an irregular rhythm, are worth getting evaluated.
If you can, check your pulse during an episode. Note whether it feels regular or irregular, roughly how fast it is, and how long it lasts. That information is genuinely useful for a clinician trying to figure out which type of rhythm problem you might have, since many of these episodes are over by the time you reach a doctor’s office.
