What Causes Your Nose to Stop Up and How to Help

A stuffy nose is almost never caused by mucus alone. The primary cause is swollen tissue inside your nasal passages. Your nose contains an extensive network of blood vessels that can rapidly fill with blood when triggered by infection, allergies, irritants, or even changes in the weather. When those vessels engorge, the tissue lining your nose thickens, the airway shrinks, and breathing through your nose becomes difficult or impossible. Nearly 29 million adults in the U.S. deal with diagnosed sinus problems, and many more experience occasional congestion without a formal diagnosis.

How Congestion Actually Works Inside Your Nose

The inside of your nose is lined with a moist membrane packed with blood vessels. Deep within that lining sits a dense web of large, expandable veins called capacitance vessels. Think of them like tiny balloons embedded in the tissue. When something irritates or inflames your nasal lining, these vessels fill with blood and expand. The swollen tissue pushes inward, reducing the space air has to flow through. That’s the “stuffed up” feeling.

Mucus does play a role, but it’s secondary. Your nose produces a thin mucus layer all the time to trap particles and keep tissue moist. During inflammation, glands in the lining ramp up mucus production and the blood vessels leak fluid into surrounding tissue (called plasma exudation). So you get a combination of swelling and extra fluid, but the swelling is what makes it hard to breathe. That’s why blowing your nose often doesn’t fully relieve congestion.

Allergies: The Most Common Trigger

When you inhale something you’re allergic to, like pollen, dust mites, or pet dander, your immune system treats it as a threat. Specialized cells in your nasal lining release a flood of chemicals within minutes. Histamine is the biggest player, triggering almost all of the immediate symptoms: sneezing, itching, runny nose, and swelling. Other inflammatory compounds called leukotrienes and prostaglandins pile on alongside it.

Allergic congestion often comes in two waves. The first hits within minutes as histamine dilates blood vessels and triggers mucus production. The second wave, usually a few hours later, brings a deeper, more stubborn congestion. During this phase, inflammatory cells like eosinophils and basophils infiltrate the nasal tissue, sustaining the swelling long after the initial allergen exposure. This is why allergy-related stuffiness can linger all day or worsen at night even if you were only outside briefly.

Colds and Sinus Infections

Viral infections are the other major cause of nasal congestion. When a cold virus infects cells in your nasal lining, your immune system responds with inflammation to fight it off. The same blood vessel dilation and tissue swelling that happen with allergies occur here, just triggered by a virus instead of pollen. A typical cold causes congestion that peaks around days two through four and clears within seven to ten days.

If congestion lasts longer than ten days, worsens after initially improving, or comes with thick discolored discharge and facial pain, a bacterial sinus infection may have developed. The swollen tissue blocks the openings to your sinuses, trapping mucus and creating an environment where bacteria can grow. Sinus infections can also become chronic, lasting 12 weeks or more, and involve persistent inflammation rather than active infection.

Non-Allergic Triggers

Many people get a stuffy nose without allergies or infection. This is called non-allergic rhinitis, and it affects the same blood vessels through different pathways. Common triggers include:

  • Temperature and humidity changes: Moving from cold air to a warm room, or encountering dry air, can cause the nasal lining to swell reflexively.
  • Strong odors and irritants: Perfume, cigarette smoke, cleaning products, and pollution can all irritate nasal tissue enough to trigger congestion.
  • Spicy food: Capsaicin and other compounds in spicy dishes stimulate nerve endings in the nose, causing a temporary rush of mucus and swelling.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol dilates blood vessels throughout the body, including those in the nose.
  • Hormonal changes: Your nose has receptors that detect hormones like estrogen. When levels rise, as they do during pregnancy, these receptors can trigger blood vessel dilation and increased mucus production. Pregnancy rhinitis affects a significant number of pregnant people and typically resolves after delivery.

If you notice your nose stops up in patterns unrelated to illness or allergy season, environmental or hormonal triggers are worth considering.

Structural Problems That Block Airflow

Sometimes the issue isn’t swelling at all, but the physical shape of your nasal passages. A deviated septum, where the wall between your two nasal passages is off-center, narrows one side and makes it harder for air to pass through. Some people are born with it, while others develop it after a nose injury. A deviated septum can also worsen with age as nasal structures change over time. You might not notice it most of the time, but during a cold or allergy flare, even mild swelling on the already-narrow side can completely block airflow.

Nasal polyps are another structural cause. These are soft, painless growths that develop on the lining of the sinuses or nasal passages, usually from chronic inflammation. They can partially or fully obstruct airflow and reduce your sense of smell. Enlarged adenoids, particularly in children, can produce similar blockage from the back of the nasal cavity.

Congestion From Overusing Decongestant Sprays

This one catches a lot of people off guard. Over-the-counter decongestant sprays work by constricting those swollen blood vessels in your nose, shrinking the tissue and opening the airway almost instantly. They’re effective, but after about three days of use, your nose starts to depend on them. When the spray wears off, the blood vessels rebound and swell even more than they did before. You spray again to get relief, and the cycle deepens.

This rebound congestion is called rhinitis medicamentosa. It can make your original congestion significantly worse and becomes harder to break the longer you continue using the spray. If you’ve been using a decongestant spray for more than three days and feel like your congestion is getting worse instead of better, the spray itself may be the problem.

One-Sided Congestion That Doesn’t Improve

Congestion that affects both sides of your nose and comes and goes is almost always benign. But persistent, one-sided congestion deserves attention, especially when paired with other specific symptoms. New-onset blockage on one side that doesn’t clear, combined with bloody discharge from that same side, one-sided facial pain or swelling, or changes in vision, can in rare cases point to a growth in the nasal cavity or sinuses. Loosening of upper teeth without an obvious dental cause is another uncommon but notable signal. These situations are rare, but they’re worth knowing about because early evaluation makes a significant difference.

What Relieves a Stuffy Nose

Since congestion is primarily about swollen tissue rather than mucus, the most effective remedies target the swelling. Saline rinses and sprays work by flushing irritants out of the nasal passages and thinning whatever mucus is present. They don’t reduce swelling directly, but they remove the triggers that cause it. Breathing in steam or using a humidifier adds moisture that can soothe irritated tissue and help mucus drain more easily.

For allergy-driven congestion, antihistamine pills block the chemical cascade that triggers swelling in the first place, and steroid nasal sprays reduce the deeper inflammation that causes the stubborn, late-phase congestion. Steroid sprays work differently from decongestant sprays. They’re safe for long-term use and typically take a few days of consistent use before reaching full effect, because they work by gradually calming the inflammatory response rather than forcing blood vessels to constrict.

Oral decongestants reduce swelling from the inside without the rebound risk of nasal sprays, though they can raise blood pressure and aren’t suitable for everyone. Elevating your head while sleeping helps prevent blood from pooling in nasal vessels, which is why congestion often feels worst when you lie flat.
