What CGM Works With Omnipod 5: Supported Sensors

The Omnipod 5 system currently works with three CGM sensors: the Dexcom G6, the Dexcom G7, and the Abbott FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus. These are the only sensors that can communicate directly with the Omnipod 5 Pod to automatically adjust insulin delivery. The older Omnipod DASH system does not integrate with any CGM at all.

Compatible CGM Sensors for Omnipod 5

Omnipod 5 is the only tubeless hybrid closed-loop system that integrates with three different CGM sensors. Each one sends glucose readings directly to the Pod via Bluetooth, and the Pod’s built-in algorithm (called SmartAdjust) uses those readings to increase or decrease basal insulin delivery automatically. Here’s how the three options break down:

  • Dexcom G7: The newest Dexcom sensor. The Omnipod 5 Android app has supported it since July 2024, and iPhone compatibility launched in June 2025. You’ll need the Dexcom G7 app running on a compatible smartphone for Automated Mode to work.
  • Dexcom G6: The original CGM that Omnipod 5 launched with. Still fully supported. Like the G7, it requires the Dexcom G6 mobile app on a phone. The standalone Dexcom receiver cannot be used with Omnipod 5.
  • FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus: Abbott’s sensor option. This one works a bit differently: it communicates with the Pod and with the Omnipod 5 App on an Insulet-provided controller, rather than requiring a separate manufacturer app on your phone.

One important distinction: only the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus is compatible, not the standard FreeStyle Libre 2, the Libre 3, or the Libre 3 Plus. If you’re currently using any of those, you’d need a new prescription specifically for the Libre 2 Plus sensor.

How the CGM Talks to the Pod

The Omnipod 5 system uses Bluetooth to create a direct link between your CGM sensor and the Pod on your body. The sensor sends glucose values straight to the Pod, and the Pod’s onboard software adjusts basal insulin based on those readings and trends. This happens independently of your phone. Your phone app receives data from the Pod and lets you send bolus commands, but the automated basal adjustments happen at the Pod level even if your phone is out of range.

The Dexcom sensors and the Libre 2 Plus handle this communication slightly differently. With Dexcom (G6 or G7), the sensor sends glucose data both to the Pod and to the Dexcom app on your smartphone. The Omnipod 5 App and the Dexcom App don’t talk to each other directly. With the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus, the sensor sends data to the Pod and to the Omnipod 5 App on the Insulet controller.

Omnipod DASH Does Not Integrate With Any CGM

If you’re using the older Omnipod DASH system, it does not connect to a CGM. The DASH can receive blood glucose readings from a compatible fingerstick meter, but it has no automated insulin adjustment feature. The SmartAdjust algorithm that responds to CGM data exists only in the Omnipod 5. So if CGM integration matters to you, the upgrade from DASH to Omnipod 5 is where that functionality lives.

Switching Between CGM Sensors

If you’re already on Omnipod 5 with one CGM and want to switch to another, the process is straightforward. You can change CGMs at your next Pod change by using a new Omnipod 5 Pod that’s compatible with your chosen sensor. No new Pod prescription is needed if you stay with your current pharmacy, though you will need a prescription for the new CGM sensor itself.

Check the packaging when you receive new Pods. For FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus compatibility, the box and tray lid will indicate this in the upper right corner. For Dexcom G7, newer Pods are compatible with both the G7 and G6, so you have flexibility to use either.

Phone and App Requirements

Your smartphone needs to meet certain requirements for the whole system to work in Automated Mode. The Omnipod 5 App runs on Android 12 through 16 and iOS 17.2 or later (including iOS 18 and iOS 26.1+), though not every phone model is supported even if it runs the right operating system. Insulet maintains a specific list of compatible devices on their website.

If you’re using a Dexcom sensor, you also need the corresponding Dexcom app (G6 or G7) installed on a compatible phone. Automated Mode requires the Dexcom sensor to be controlled through the mobile app, not a standalone Dexcom receiver. This means you effectively need a phone that supports both the Omnipod 5 App and the Dexcom app. With the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus, the setup is different since Insulet provides a dedicated controller device, which may simplify things if your phone isn’t on the compatibility list.

Availability by Region

All three CGM options are available in both the United States and the United Kingdom. Insulet is also developing a caregiver sharing feature for users on the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus integration, which would let parents or caregivers see real-time glucose data remotely. This is particularly relevant for families managing a child’s diabetes, where the Libre 2 Plus option currently lacks the same remote monitoring that Dexcom users get through the Dexcom Follow app.
