A typical tube of toothpaste contains between 10 and 20 ingredients, each serving a specific purpose: fighting cavities, scrubbing stains, creating foam, or simply keeping the paste moist in the tube. Some of these chemicals are active ingredients designed to protect your teeth, while others are structural, giving toothpaste its texture, flavor, and shelf life. Here’s what’s actually in there and what each ingredient does.
Fluoride: The Core Active Ingredient
Fluoride is the single most important chemical in most toothpastes. It works by strengthening tooth enamel and reversing the earliest stages of decay before a cavity fully forms. The World Health Organization recommends toothpaste contain between 1,000 and 1,500 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride for all age groups, and notes that formulations below 1,000 ppm haven’t shown a meaningful cavity-prevention effect.
Fluoride shows up in three main forms on ingredient labels. Sodium fluoride is the most common and has been a standard for decades. Sodium monofluorophosphate (sometimes listed as MFP) is another widely used version, often found in budget-friendly brands. Stannous fluoride, the third type, pulls double duty: it fights cavities like the others but also has antibacterial properties and can help reduce tooth sensitivity and gum inflammation. If you’ve seen toothpaste marketed for “gum health,” stannous fluoride is often the reason.
Abrasives That Scrub Your Teeth Clean
Toothpaste wouldn’t do much without something slightly gritty to physically remove plaque, food particles, and surface stains. These abrasives are fine, insoluble particles mixed throughout the paste. The two most common are hydrated silica and calcium carbonate. Hydrated silica, a derivative of silicon dioxide, is the more popular choice in modern formulations because manufacturers can precisely control its particle size and abrasiveness. Calcium carbonate is cheaper and shows up frequently in economy brands.
Other abrasives you might spot on a label include dicalcium phosphate, alumina, and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). Baking soda is sometimes described as the most “multifunctional” abrasive because it cleans, mildly whitens, and helps neutralize acids in the mouth. The key with all abrasives is balance: enough grit to clean effectively, but not so much that it wears down enamel over time. Toothpastes marketed for sensitive teeth generally use finer, gentler abrasive systems.
Surfactants: Why Toothpaste Foams
The foaming action you feel when you brush comes from a surfactant, most commonly sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). SLS has been used in toothpaste for over 50 years because it’s cheap, produces satisfying foam, and has mild antibacterial properties. The foam itself isn’t just for show. It lowers surface tension in your mouth, helping the toothpaste spread evenly and reach between teeth. Surfactants also help dissolve oily or hydrophobic compounds like flavoring agents so they mix into the water-based paste.
SLS can irritate soft tissue in some people, particularly those prone to canker sores or who have sensitive gums. Several brands now offer SLS-free formulas that use gentler alternatives like stearyl ethoxylate or cocamidopropyl betaine. These produce less foam but are otherwise just as effective at distributing the paste around your mouth.
Humectants: Keeping the Paste Moist
Without humectants, toothpaste would dry out and harden in the tube. Most toothpastes contain either sorbitol or glycerin, or both. These ingredients trap moisture and give toothpaste its smooth, squeezable texture. Sorbitol also contributes mild sweetness, which is why it serves a dual role as both humectant and flavor enhancer. Propylene glycol is another humectant that shows up in some formulations, helping ingredients stay evenly blended.
Sweeteners and Flavoring
Toothpaste obviously can’t contain sugar, so manufacturers rely on non-sugar sweeteners to make the experience palatable. Saccharin is the most traditional choice, though it can leave a faint metallic aftertaste. Xylitol is increasingly popular because, beyond sweetness, it actively discourages the growth of cavity-causing bacteria. Sugar alcohols like sorbitol and xylitol don’t promote tooth decay or spike blood sugar, which is why they’re preferred over conventional sweeteners. Some natural brands use stevia instead.
The minty flavor itself typically comes from essential oils, most often spearmint or peppermint oil. These are combined with menthol to create that cool, clean sensation. Flavoring agents are a small percentage of the formula but have an outsized effect on whether people actually enjoy brushing long enough to be effective.
Whitening Agents
Whitening toothpastes use a few different strategies. Some rely on stronger or more specialized abrasives to polish away surface stains mechanically. Others include chemical agents that break down stain molecules. Hydrogen peroxide and its precursor carbamide peroxide are the gold standard for chemical whitening, but regulations limit their concentration in over-the-counter products. In the European Union, for instance, anything above 0.1% peroxide can only be used under a dentist’s supervision.
Because of these restrictions, many whitening toothpastes use alternative chemicals like phthalimidoperoxycaproic acid (often listed as PAP on labels), sodium chlorite, or sodium bicarbonate. Some newer formulas include plant-derived enzymes like bromelain (from pineapple) or papain (from papaya) that break down protein-based stain films on enamel. These enzyme-based approaches are gentler but generally produce more modest results than peroxide-based treatments.
Desensitizing Chemicals
If you use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth, it likely contains potassium nitrate at a concentration of about 5%. Potassium ions work by calming the nerve fibers inside your teeth. Tiny channels called tubules run through the layer beneath your enamel, and when enamel thins or gums recede, stimuli like cold water or sweet food travel through these channels to trigger pain. Potassium nitrate blocks the electrical signals those nerves generate, essentially turning down the volume on pain. It typically takes a couple of weeks of regular use to notice a difference.
Stannous fluoride also reduces sensitivity through a different mechanism: it physically plugs those exposed tubules, creating a barrier. Some sensitivity toothpastes combine both approaches.
Binders, Thickeners, and Preservatives
Several behind-the-scenes ingredients hold toothpaste together and keep it stable on the shelf. Cellulose gum and xanthan gum are common thickeners that give toothpaste its body and prevent the solid and liquid ingredients from separating. Titanium dioxide is added purely for appearance, giving white toothpaste its opaque color. Preservatives like sodium benzoate or methylparaben prevent bacterial growth inside the tube. These ingredients are present in small amounts and don’t interact with your teeth in any meaningful way.
Hydroxyapatite: The Fluoride Alternative
A growing number of toothpastes, particularly in Japan and parts of Europe, replace fluoride with nano-hydroxyapatite. This is a synthetic version of the mineral that makes up about 97% of your tooth enamel. Rather than strengthening existing enamel the way fluoride does, hydroxyapatite particles physically fill in tiny defects and scratches on the enamel surface, essentially patching damaged areas. Research indicates that a concentration of 10% nano-hydroxyapatite is the threshold for effective remineralization, with a significant jump in performance between 5% and 10%. Toothpastes containing 10% to 15% have also shown effectiveness for reducing sensitivity, comparable to other desensitizing ingredients.
Ingredients That Have Been Phased Out
Not every chemical that was once common in toothpaste is still around. Triclosan, an antibacterial agent, was used in Colgate Total for years after receiving FDA approval in 1997 for its effectiveness against gingivitis. However, subsequent research raised concerns about endocrine disruption and the potential to contribute to antibiotic resistance. The EPA’s Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program found evidence supporting these concerns, and major manufacturers have since reformulated their products to remove it. Microbeads, tiny plastic particles once added for scrubbing action, were banned in the U.S. in 2015 under the Microbead-Free Waters Act due to environmental pollution concerns.
