Female ejaculate is typically a small amount of milky white fluid released at orgasm. But “cum” can refer to several different fluids the body produces during sex, and each one looks different. Understanding what’s normal helps you tell the difference between healthy variation and something worth paying attention to.
Female Ejaculate vs. Squirting vs. Arousal Fluid
There are three distinct fluids involved in female sexual response, and they differ in color, volume, and source. People often lump them together, but they’re not the same thing.
Female ejaculate is a thick, whitish fluid produced by small glands near the urethra (sometimes called Skene’s glands or the female prostate). It comes out in very small quantities at orgasm. The fluid contains proteins similar to those found in male semen, which is why it has that milky appearance. A 2015 study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine described it as “very scanty, thick, and whitish.”
Squirting is a separate phenomenon. It involves a much larger volume of fluid, enough to soak through sheets. This fluid is clear and watery, closer to very dilute urine. Chemically, researchers have confirmed it comes from the bladder and contains diluted levels of urea and creatinine. It sometimes contains trace amounts of the proteins found in true female ejaculate, suggesting both sources can contribute at once.
Arousal fluid is the lubrication your body produces during sexual excitement. Glands on either side of the vaginal opening secrete a clear, slippery fluid that reduces friction. This is not ejaculate. It’s colorless and thin, similar in consistency to water or a light gel.
What’s Normal During the Menstrual Cycle
Outside of sexual activity, vaginal discharge changes in color and texture throughout the month thanks to shifting hormones. These changes are completely normal and don’t signal a problem on their own.
After a period ends, discharge tends to be dry or sticky, white or slightly yellow-tinged. Over the next several days it becomes creamy, smooth, and white, similar to yogurt. Around ovulation (roughly days 10 to 14 of a 28-day cycle), it shifts to clear, stretchy, and slippery, resembling raw egg whites. This wet, slippery phase lasts about three or four days. After ovulation, discharge dries up again until the next period.
So if you notice that the color or texture of vaginal fluid varies from week to week, that’s the menstrual cycle at work, not something wrong.
Colors That May Signal a Problem
Healthy discharge ranges from clear to white to light yellow. Certain color changes, especially when paired with odor, itching, or irritation, can point to an infection.
- Thick, clumpy white (cottage cheese texture): Often a yeast infection, especially if it comes with itching.
- Gray or white with a fishy smell: Common with bacterial vaginosis, an overgrowth of bacteria that disrupts the vagina’s natural balance.
- Yellow, green, or gray and bubbly: Can indicate trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection.
- Cloudy yellow or green: Sometimes associated with gonorrhea or chlamydia, though many people with these infections have no visible symptoms at all.
Color alone isn’t enough for a diagnosis. A fishy or foul smell, burning, itching, or pain during sex alongside a color change is a stronger signal that something needs attention. Testing is the only reliable way to identify the cause, since many of these conditions overlap in how they look.
Why It Varies From Person to Person
There’s no single “correct” appearance for any of these fluids. Hydration levels, diet, where you are in your cycle, how aroused you are, and individual anatomy all play a role. Some people produce noticeable ejaculate at orgasm; many don’t. Some people experience squirting; most don’t. The volume and appearance of arousal fluid varies widely too.
The key pattern to watch for isn’t a specific color on a specific day. It’s a change from your own baseline, particularly one that shows up with other symptoms like smell, discomfort, or irritation. That’s when the color of discharge becomes diagnostically useful rather than just a normal fluctuation.
