Squirting fluid is typically clear and transparent, similar in appearance to water. This distinguishes it from female ejaculate, which is a separate fluid that appears milky white and has a thicker consistency. The two are often confused, but they differ in color, volume, source, and composition.
Squirting Fluid vs. Female Ejaculate
Research now recognizes that women can expel two distinct types of fluid during sexual arousal and orgasm, and they look noticeably different from each other.
Squirting produces approximately 10 milliliters or more of transparent, watery fluid. Some women report volumes comparable to a glass of water. The fluid is thin, clear, and largely odorless or mildly scented, which is why it can be mistaken for urine at first glance.
Female ejaculate, by contrast, is a small amount of thick, milky white fluid. It comes from the Skene’s glands (sometimes called the female prostate), two tiny glands located near the opening of the urethra. This fluid contains proteins similar to those found in male semen, including prostate-specific antigen. The volume is typically just a few milliliters.

A frequently cited 2015 ultrasound study led by gynecologist Samuel Salama tracked what happens inside the body during squirting. Seven women had their bladders scanned at three points: before arousal, just before squirting, and immediately after. Before arousal, their bladders were completely empty. During sexual stimulation, the bladders filled noticeably. After squirting, the bladders were empty again.
Biochemical testing confirmed that the squirted fluid contained urea, creatinine, and uric acid at concentrations comparable to urine. The researchers concluded that squirting is primarily an involuntary release of dilute fluid from the bladder during sexual activity. However, in five of the seven women, the fluid also contained prostate-specific antigen, a marker of Skene’s gland secretions. This means squirting fluid is mostly bladder-derived but often has a small contribution from the same glands that produce female ejaculate.
This mix helps explain why squirting fluid looks and smells different from typical urine. The dilution and the added glandular secretions give it a clearer, more neutral character.
Why the Color Can Vary
While “clear and transparent” is the most common description in clinical literature, real-world variation exists. Hydration level plays a significant role. If you’re well hydrated, the fluid will be more dilute and closer to colorless. If you’re less hydrated, it may take on a faint yellow tint, since the bladder-derived component becomes more concentrated.
The proportion of Skene’s gland secretion mixed in can also shift the appearance slightly. A higher concentration of that milky white prostatic fluid can give the overall fluid a slightly cloudy or off-white quality rather than perfectly clear. This is more likely when both squirting and female ejaculation happen simultaneously.
Volume and Consistency
Squirting fluid is thin and watery, with a consistency very close to water itself. This is the main physical difference between squirting and female ejaculation: the ejaculate is viscous and thick, while squirting fluid flows easily and can soak through sheets or towels quickly.
Volume varies widely between individuals and even between experiences for the same person. Some women produce a small gush, while others report amounts large enough to visibly wet bedding. The study by Salama’s team noted volumes comparable to a glass of water in some participants, though smaller amounts are more typical. Arousal duration, hydration, and individual anatomy all influence how much fluid is released.
Common Misconceptions About Appearance
The most persistent misconception is that squirting fluid is simply urine. While it originates primarily from the bladder and shares some chemical markers with urine, it’s more accurately described as a very dilute, modified fluid that often contains prostatic secretions. Its clear, largely odorless quality reflects this dilution.
Another common misunderstanding is that all fluid released during orgasm is the same thing. Before 2011, researchers grouped all orgasmic fluid expulsion under the single label “female ejaculation.” Current evidence treats squirting and female ejaculation as two entirely different phenomena that happen to occur through the same opening. Recognizing the distinction matters because it explains why the fluid can look so different from one experience to the next: sometimes clear and abundant, sometimes white and minimal, sometimes a combination of both.
