A medium pink to dark pink reading, corresponding to roughly 15 to 40 mg/dL of ketones, is the color range most associated with nutritional ketosis and active fat burning. Many people assume the darkest purple means the most weight loss, but that’s not how it works. Darker readings often reflect dehydration more than deeper fat burning, and the strips themselves have significant accuracy limitations.
What Each Color Means
Ketone urine strips use a reactive pad that shifts from beige to increasingly deep purple as ketone concentration rises. The standard breakdown looks like this:

What Actually Drives Weight Loss in Ketosis
The color on the strip is a rough indicator that you’re in ketosis, not a speedometer for fat loss. Weight loss on a ketogenic diet comes from maintaining a calorie deficit while your body uses fat as its primary fuel source. Being “more purple” doesn’t accelerate that process. Someone with a consistent light-to-medium pink reading who is eating at a moderate calorie deficit will lose more fat than someone showing dark purple who is simply dehydrated or fasting unsustainably.
Think of the strip as a yes-or-no confirmation tool, especially in the first few weeks of a ketogenic diet when you’re establishing your carb threshold. Any consistent pink reading tells you that your carbohydrate intake is low enough to shift your metabolism. Once you’ve confirmed that, your scale, measurements, energy levels, and how your clothes fit are all more meaningful indicators of progress than strip color.
If you want precise, ongoing tracking, a blood ketone meter that measures beta-hydroxybutyrate directly gives far more accurate results than urine strips. The test strips cost more per use, but the readings reflect what’s actually circulating in your blood rather than what your kidneys happened to excrete hours earlier.
