What Color Should Your Urine Be? All Shades Explained

Healthy urine ranges from pale yellow to amber, with a light straw color being the sweet spot for most people. That yellow tint comes from urochrome, a pigment your body produces when it breaks down hemoglobin in red blood cells. How dark or light your urine appears on any given day depends mainly on how much water you’re drinking, but color changes outside the yellow spectrum can signal everything from a harmless dietary quirk to a condition worth investigating.

What Each Shade of Yellow Means

Think of urine color on a spectrum from nearly clear to deep honey. Where you fall on that spectrum is a reliable, real-time snapshot of your hydration.

  • Pale straw to light yellow (well hydrated): This is the target. Your kidneys are filtering waste efficiently, and you’re taking in enough fluid.
  • Slightly darker yellow (mildly dehydrated): You need more water soon, but nothing is wrong. This is common first thing in the morning after hours without drinking.
  • Medium to dark amber (dehydrated): Your kidneys are concentrating waste into less fluid. The urine may also smell stronger. Time to drink water steadily over the next hour or two.
  • Dark amber or brown-tinged (very dehydrated): Small volumes of dark, strong-smelling urine mean your body is short on water. Rehydrate and watch for improvement within a few bathroom trips.

Morning urine is almost always darker than afternoon urine, so judge your hydration by the color you see after you’ve been drinking normally for a few hours, not by your first trip to the bathroom.

When Clear Urine Isn’t Ideal

Completely colorless urine once in a while is fine, especially after drinking a large glass of water. But if your urine is consistently clear throughout the day, you may actually be overhydrating. Drinking too much water dilutes sodium in your blood, a condition called hyponatremia, which can cause headaches, nausea, confusion, and in severe cases, seizures.

How much is too much? For most people, drinking more than about a liter (32 ounces) of water per hour exceeds what the kidneys can process efficiently. In some cases, consuming roughly a gallon over just an hour or two has led to water intoxication. A pale yellow color means your kidneys are working properly and you’re drinking enough. You don’t need to chase perfectly clear urine.

Bright Neon Yellow From Supplements

If your urine looks almost fluorescent yellow, the most likely explanation is riboflavin, also known as vitamin B2. It’s a water-soluble vitamin found in multivitamins and B-complex supplements. Your body absorbs what it needs and flushes the rest through your kidneys, turning the urine a vivid, sometimes startling, bright yellow. This is completely harmless and stops once the excess vitamin clears your system.

Orange Urine

Dehydration can push urine from dark yellow into orange territory, but certain medications are more common culprits. Phenazopyridine, a bladder pain reliever available over the counter, is well known for turning urine bright orange. Some constipation medications, chemotherapy drugs, and the tuberculosis drug rifampin can do the same. If you recently started a new medication and notice orange urine, check the drug’s side effects before worrying.

Red or Pink Urine

Red urine gets your attention fast, but the cause is often as simple as dinner. Beets are the classic offender. A phenomenon called beeturia produces urine that ranges from pink to deep red after eating beets or foods made with beetroot extract. Eating beets alongside spinach or rhubarb can intensify the effect because compounds in those foods increase absorption of the red pigment. Blackberries and rhubarb on their own can also tint urine pink.

If you haven’t eaten any of these foods, red or pink urine may contain blood. Possible causes include urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and less commonly, kidney disease or bladder issues. Blood in the urine isn’t always visible to the naked eye, so even a faint pink tinge that persists after a second or third bathroom visit is worth mentioning to a doctor, especially if it comes with pain, fever, or difficulty urinating.

Brown or Cola-Colored Urine

Dark brown urine that looks like tea or cola can point to liver problems. When the liver is inflamed or bile flow is reduced, a waste product called bilirubin builds up in the blood and gets filtered through the kidneys instead, darkening the urine. Hepatitis is one common cause of this pattern. Brown urine can also result from severe dehydration or from muscle breakdown (which releases proteins that the kidneys filter out), particularly after extreme exercise or a crush injury.

If your urine turns brown and stays that way for more than a day, especially alongside yellowing skin or eyes, pale stools, or abdominal pain, those are signs that your liver or kidneys need evaluation.

Blue or Green Urine

Green or blue urine is rare, which is exactly why it’s alarming when it happens. The most common cause is medication. Certain antidepressants, acid reflux treatments, pain relievers like indomethacin, some diuretics, and the anesthetic propofol can all shift urine into the green or blue-green range.

Less commonly, a urinary tract infection caused by Pseudomonas bacteria can turn urine green. These bacteria produce pigments as they grow, tinting the urine. If green urine shows up alongside burning, urgency, or fever, an infection is a likely explanation.

Certain food dyes, particularly in brightly colored drinks or candies, can also temporarily give urine a green tint. If you can trace it back to something you ate or drank and it resolves within a day, it’s nothing to worry about.

Cloudy or Foamy Urine

Color isn’t the only thing worth noticing. Cloudiness often signals a urinary tract infection, where bacteria and white blood cells make the urine look milky or turbid. Dehydration can have a similar effect, since concentrated urine is more likely to appear cloudy.

Foam is a separate issue. Urine can foam temporarily if you urinate with force or speed, and that’s normal. But persistent, noticeable foam that seems to be getting worse over time can indicate protein leaking into the urine, a condition called proteinuria. Healthy kidneys keep protein in the blood; when they’re damaged, protein slips through into the urine and creates a frothy, soapy layer. A simple urine dipstick test can confirm whether protein levels are elevated.

Color Changes That Deserve Attention

Most one-off color changes trace back to food, supplements, medications, or hydration. The changes worth investigating are the ones that persist for more than a day or two without an obvious explanation. Red or pink urine with no dietary cause, brown or cola-colored urine, and persistent cloudiness or foam are the top signals that something beyond hydration is going on. Pair any of these with symptoms like pain, fever, fatigue, or changes in how often you urinate, and it becomes more important to get checked promptly rather than waiting it out.
