Breast milk can be yellow, white, bluish-white, green, pink, red, brown, and even orange depending on the stage of lactation, what you eat, and whether small amounts of blood are present. Most color changes are completely normal and don’t affect the safety of your milk.
Yellow: Colostrum and Early Milk
The first milk your body produces is colostrum, often called “liquid gold” for its deep yellow color. Colostrum is thick, concentrated, and packed with antibodies. You produce it in small amounts during the first few days after birth before your milk supply fully comes in.
Yellow tones can also show up later. Frozen breast milk often takes on a yellowish hue, which is harmless. If you’re eating a lot of carrots, sweet potatoes, or other foods rich in beta-carotene, your milk may lean yellow or slightly orange as well.
White and Bluish-White: Mature Milk
As colostrum transitions into mature milk over the first week or two, it gradually becomes creamier and whiter. You may notice your breasts feeling fuller and warmer during this shift, and the milk itself taking on a bluish-white color. This is called transitional milk, and it’s a normal part of the process.
Once your milk is fully mature, the color can actually change during a single pumping or feeding session. Foremilk, the milk that comes out first, is lower in fat and higher in sugar. It often has a thin, watery look with a bluish tint. As the feeding continues, fattier hindmilk follows. This thicker, calorie-rich milk appears creamier and whiter. Both are important for your baby: the foremilk quenches thirst while the hindmilk provides the fat babies need to grow.
Green Milk
Green breast milk is almost always a food or supplement issue. Eating large amounts of green vegetables like spinach or kale, drinking green-colored beverages, or taking certain vitamins and minerals can all tint your milk green. Iron-containing multivitamins are a well-documented cause. In one published case, a mother’s milk turned green after she took blue-green algae supplements around the time of delivery. The green color doesn’t make the milk unsafe, and it returns to normal once you stop eating whatever caused the change.
Pink, Red, or Brown Milk
These colors usually mean a small amount of blood has mixed into the milk. Even a tiny bit of blood will turn milk noticeably pink. The most common cause is nipple trauma: the repeated friction of breastfeeding can crack the skin, and a little bleeding is enough to change the color. Breast engorgement after birth can also stretch and break delicate blood vessels inside the breast, allowing blood to enter the milk ducts.
Less common causes include mastitis (a breast infection that can cause blood to leak from the nipples), intraductal papillomas (small noncancerous growths in the milk ducts), and, rarely, breast cancer. A bacterium called Serratia marcescens can also cause bright pink milk. This organism typically enters through cracked skin on the nipple and produces a vivid pink pigment. If you notice bright pink milk without an obvious cause like cracked nipples, or if the color persists, it’s worth having it checked.
Brown or rust-colored milk follows the same logic. It’s usually older blood that has oxidized, similar to how a scab darkens over time. Small amounts of blood in breast milk are generally safe for babies to consume, though the underlying cause may need attention if it doesn’t resolve on its own within a few days.
How Medications Can Change Color
Certain medications can alter the color of breast milk as a side effect. Tetracycline antibiotics, for example, are known to cause discoloration of bodily secretions, including breast milk. One leprosy medication (clofazimine) can turn milk pink. These cases are uncommon, but if you start a new medication and notice a sudden color change, the drug is a likely explanation.
What Changes Are Worth Watching
The vast majority of breast milk color changes are harmless. Yellow, white, bluish, and green are almost never a concern. Pink or red milk from a cracked nipple typically resolves as the nipple heals. The situations that warrant a closer look are persistent pink or red milk without an obvious cause, bright pink milk that could indicate a bacterial issue, or any color change accompanied by pain, fever, or other signs of infection. In those cases, a lactation consultant or healthcare provider can help sort out what’s going on.
