What Deficiency Causes Sunken Eyes and How to Fix It

Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional cause of sunken eyes, but low levels of vitamin C, vitamin K, and other nutrients can also contribute. Vitamin C and Collagen Loss

Vitamin C plays a direct role in building collagen, the structural protein that keeps skin firm and plump. It acts as a required helper molecule for the enzymes that assemble collagen fibers into their signature triple-helix shape. Without enough vitamin C, your body produces less type I and type III collagen (the main types in skin) and simultaneously breaks down existing collagen faster. Because the skin there is nearly translucent, even slight pooling of blood or weakened vessel walls creates dark, bruise-like discoloration that deepens the appearance of sunken eyes.

True vitamin K deficiency is less common than iron or vitamin C shortfalls because gut bacteria produce some on their own and leafy greens are a rich source. But people taking long courses of antibiotics, those with fat absorption disorders, or anyone eating very few green vegetables can develop low levels over time.

Dehydration: Not a Deficiency, but a Common Cause

Dehydration isn’t a nutrient deficiency in the traditional sense, but it’s worth mentioning because it’s the single most common reason eyes look suddenly sunken. When your body is low on fluids, the fat pad beneath the eye loses volume quickly, and the skin loses its elasticity. The effect can appear overnight after a night of heavy drinking, illness with vomiting or diarrhea, or simply not drinking enough water on a hot day. Unlike nutritional causes, dehydration-related sunken eyes typically reverse within 24 to 48 hours once fluid intake returns to normal.

How to Tell Which Deficiency You Have

The appearance alone won’t pinpoint a single deficiency because the end result, hollowed and darkened under-eyes, looks similar regardless of the underlying cause. What helps narrow it down are the other symptoms that come along with each one.

  • Iron deficiency typically comes with persistent fatigue, pale nail beds, cold hands and feet, and sometimes brittle nails or cravings for ice or dirt.
  • Vitamin C deficiency tends to show up as easy bruising, slow wound healing, bleeding gums, and dry or rough skin across the body.
  • Vitamin K deficiency often appears as unusual bruising or bleeding that takes longer than normal to stop, even from minor cuts.

A standard blood panel can check for anemia and iron stores, while vitamin C and vitamin K levels can be tested separately if your symptoms point in that direction. If you’ve noticed sunken eyes developing over weeks or months alongside any of the patterns above, a targeted blood test is the fastest way to get a clear answer and start correcting it.

Correcting the Deficiency

The good news is that nutritional sunken eyes are largely reversible once the missing nutrient is restored. Iron-rich foods like red meat, lentils, and spinach paired with a vitamin C source (which boosts iron absorption) can raise levels over several weeks, though some people need a supplement to catch up faster. Vitamin C levels respond quickly to dietary changes since the body doesn’t store large amounts. Most people notice skin improvements within a few weeks of consistent intake. Vitamin K levels recover once dietary sources like kale, broccoli, or fermented foods are reintroduced regularly.
