If you have diabetes, abnormal urine ketones are a signal to check your blood sugar, review whether you’ve missed any insulin doses, and test again. People with type 1 diabetes should test for ketones during any illness, when blood sugar runs above 250 mg/dL, or whenever they feel symptoms of DKA. Keeping ketone test strips at home and knowing your sick-day management plan can prevent a manageable situation from escalating.
If you don’t have diabetes and keep getting abnormal ketone results without an obvious dietary or lifestyle explanation, it’s worth investigating.
