What Do Age Spots Look Like on Your Face?

Age spots on the face are flat, oval patches of darkened skin that range from light tan to dark brown. They have clearly defined edges, sometimes with a slightly scalloped or irregular outline, and they feel smooth to the touch, not raised or bumpy. Most are a few millimeters to a centimeter or so across, roughly the size of a pencil eraser, though they can be larger. By age 60, up to 90% of white adults have at least one.

Color, Shape, and Texture

The color of an age spot falls somewhere on a spectrum from light tan to deep brown, depending on your skin tone and how much sun exposure caused it. The pigment is generally uniform across the spot, without streaks or multiple colors blending together. Under magnification, dermatologists describe the pattern as “homogeneous structureless pigmentation,” which in plain terms means the color looks evenly distributed rather than mottled or patchy.

The shape is usually oval or round, though some spots develop a slightly irregular, scalloped border that gives them a more organic look. They’re completely flat. If you close your eyes and run a finger over one, you won’t feel any bump or roughness. That flatness is one of the most reliable visual clues that what you’re looking at is a standard age spot rather than something else.

Over time, existing spots can darken and grow slightly larger, especially with continued sun exposure. They tend to persist year-round and don’t fade significantly in winter the way freckles do.

Where They Show Up on the Face

Age spots cluster on the parts of your face that get the most cumulative sun exposure: the forehead, cheeks, temples, nose bridge, and the area above your upper lip. They’re strongly linked to other visible signs of long-term sun damage. A study of facial age spots found they were 2.4 times more likely to appear alongside sun-damaged, leathery skin (what dermatologists call elastosis) and 1.8 times more likely to show up near precancerous rough patches. Both chronic daily exposure and intermittent intense exposure, like sunburns, contribute to their development.

You might notice a single spot at first, then gradually see more appear in the same general zone over months or years. They can also show up on other sun-exposed areas like the backs of your hands, forearms, and shoulders, but the face is the most common location people notice first.

Why They Form

Your skin contains pigment-producing cells that respond to ultraviolet light by making more melanin, the brown pigment that gives skin its color. Normally this process is temporary. But after years of sun exposure, the signaling system in certain patches of skin gets stuck in overdrive. UV light triggers a chain reaction: it switches on the gene for the key enzyme in melanin production while also ramping up chemical signals from surrounding skin cells. These signals push pigment cells to multiply, produce more melanin, and resist the normal cell death that would clear them out.

The result is a small cluster of overactive pigment cells permanently producing extra melanin, creating a visible dark patch. Unlike a tan, which fades when you stop getting sun, age spots reflect structural changes in the skin that don’t reverse on their own.

Age Spots vs. Freckles

The two are easy to confuse, but they behave differently. Freckles are smaller, lighter, and have softer, less defined borders. The biggest difference is seasonal: freckles darken in summer and fade considerably or even disappear in winter. Age spots stay visible year-round. They may lighten slightly during darker months, but they don’t go away.

Age spots are also larger and more sharply defined than freckles. Where a freckle blends gently into surrounding skin, an age spot has a distinct edge you can trace with your eye. Freckles tend to show up in childhood or adolescence, while age spots rarely appear before your 40s or 50s unless you’ve had significant sun exposure earlier in life.

Signs a Spot Needs a Closer Look

A typical age spot is one consistent shade of brown, flat, and roughly symmetrical. Certain features suggest something other than a benign age spot, including a type of early melanoma called lentigo maligna that can look deceptively similar at first glance.

  • Asymmetry: One half of the spot doesn’t match the other in shape or color.
  • Multiple colors: A mix of brown, black, gray, red, or white within the same spot. Gray tones in particular are a red flag.
  • Irregular borders: Not just gently scalloped, but jagged, notched, or blurred in a way that looks disorganized.
  • Growth or change: A spot that’s rapidly getting larger, darker, or developing new features over weeks to months.
  • Diameter: A spot wider than about 6 millimeters (roughly the size of a pencil eraser) deserves extra attention, though smaller spots can also be concerning if they have other unusual features.

Under a dermatoscope, the magnifying tool dermatologists use, a harmless age spot shows smooth, even pigment. Lentigo maligna, by contrast, shows asymmetric dark coloring around hair follicle openings and diamond-shaped pigment structures that a benign spot lacks. These patterns are invisible to the naked eye, which is why a spot that looks “mostly normal” but has any of the features listed above is worth getting checked with proper magnification.

What You Can Expect Over Time

Age spots are harmless and painless. They don’t itch, bleed, or develop into cancer on their own. Once formed, they tend to stick around permanently, though they can be treated cosmetically with options ranging from topical lightening agents to professional procedures like laser therapy or cryotherapy. New spots will continue to appear with ongoing sun exposure, and existing ones can slowly darken and expand.

Daily sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is the most effective way to slow the appearance of new spots and keep existing ones from darkening further. Broad-brimmed hats that shade the forehead, cheeks, and nose make a measurable difference for facial spots specifically, since those areas get the most direct and reflected UV light throughout the day.
