They exhibit a strong preference for ripe fruit, which provides a high-energy source of carbohydrates and calories necessary for their active, arboreal lifestyle. During peak seasons, fruit can constitute over 90% of their daily consumption.
The remainder of their plant diet includes various vegetative components. This includes young leaves, flowers, seeds, bark, and the soft, fibrous pith found inside plant stems. Leaves, especially those from species like fig (Ficus), are rich sources of fiber, protein, and essential minerals. Consuming this varied plant matter ensures they maintain a balanced intake when preferred fruit is scarce.
Crucial Protein Sources: Insects and Hunting Small Mammals
Animal matter is a concentrated source of protein, fat, and micronutrients. Invertebrates, primarily social insects like termites and ants, are consistently consumed as a protein supplement. The consumption of certain termite species can supply comparable amounts of protein to vertebrate prey and may fulfill daily requirements for Vitamin B12.
Chimpanzees also supplement their diet by opportunistically hunting small to medium-sized mammals. The most frequently targeted prey are other primates, particularly red colobus monkeys, which are often hunted cooperatively by groups of males. Though meat constitutes less than 2% of the annual diet, it is often distributed and shared after a successful hunt. This sharing serves a social function, aiding in alliance formation or attracting females.

Chimpanzees demonstrate intelligence by manipulating objects to access food resources. This cognitive feeding behavior involves the manufacture and use of diverse tools, which vary culturally among different communities. One example is “termite fishing,” where a chimpanzee modifies a twig into a probe to insert into a termite mound and extract insects.
The use of stone tools represents a higher level of sophistication in food processing. In West Africa, chimpanzees utilize hard objects like stones or wood as hammers and large rocks as anvils to crack open tough-shelled nuts. This nut-cracking requires organizing a precise sequence of actions, including selecting the correct tools and striking with controlled force. Other tools, such as leaf sponges, are used to soak up water, or sharpened sticks are fashioned into spears for hunting.
Adjusting the Menu: Seasonal and Regional Dietary Shifts
The chimpanzee diet adapts to seasonal availability and the specific ecology of their region. During periods of fruit abundance, chimpanzees spend less time traveling and consume their preferred high-calorie foods. When the dry season arrives and ripe fruits become scarce, their diet shifts to incorporate fallback foods.
These fallback resources include lower-quality, fibrous items like tree bark, pith, and certain types of leaves. This shift requires increased foraging effort, sometimes forcing chimpanzees to form smaller feeding parties to maximize resource discovery. Regional differences are also pronounced, with communities in savanna woodlands relying more heavily on underground tubers and herbaceous plants.
