What Do Dog Bladder Stones Look Like? Sizes and Types

Dog bladder stones are solid mineral formations that range from tiny grains of sand to smooth, round masses the size of a golf ball or larger. Their appearance varies widely depending on what they’re made of, but most look like small pebbles or irregularly shaped rocks in shades of white, yellow, green, or brown. If your vet has mentioned stones or you’ve spotted something unusual in your dog’s urine, here’s what to expect.

How Different Stone Types Look

Not all bladder stones look the same. The mineral composition determines the color, shape, and surface texture, and researchers at the Minnesota Urolith Center have cataloged these differences across hundreds of stones. They classify surface textures into four categories: smooth, plated, bosselated (a bumpy, grape-cluster shape), and spiked.

Struvite stones are the most common type in dogs. They tend to be smooth, white to light yellow, and can grow quite large because they form relatively quickly. Of all smooth stones analyzed, 70% turned out to be struvite. They often look like polished pebbles or small, pale rocks and may appear alone or in clusters of multiple stones.

Calcium oxalate stones come in two forms that look noticeably different from each other. The monohydrate form is typically smooth or bumpy, tan to brown, and dense. The dihydrate form tends to have a rougher, sometimes spiky surface and a lighter color. Among bumpy, grape-cluster-shaped stones, 45% were calcium oxalate monohydrate. These stones are harder than struvite and feel almost like small pieces of rock or coral.

Urate stones, the third most common type, are usually smooth and oval with a yellow-brown to greenish tint. A classic example is the smooth, egg-shaped stone often seen in Dalmatians. About 10% of smooth stones analyzed were urate.

Cystine stones are less common and tend to be yellow to light brown. They can be either smooth or bosselated. Among bumpy stones, 35% were cystine, making that grape-cluster texture a strong visual clue for this type.

Size Range: Sand Grains to Golf Balls

Bladder stones in dogs can be as small as fine grit, barely visible to the naked eye, or as large as a walnut or golf ball. Some dogs pass tiny stones (sometimes called “crystals” at their smallest) in their urine without anyone noticing. Others develop a single massive stone that fills much of the bladder. It’s also common for dogs to have dozens of small stones at once, looking like a handful of gravel when removed surgically.

Size matters for diagnosis. Larger stones of any mineral type show up on standard X-rays. But smaller stones, particularly urate and cystine types, can be difficult to spot on X-rays because their mineral composition doesn’t block the beam as effectively. This doesn’t mean they’re invisible. It just means your vet may need an ultrasound to find them. As the Minnesota Urolith Center notes, even these “radiolucent” stone types become more obvious on X-rays as they grow larger.

You Can’t Always Tell the Type by Looking

While certain textures and colors lean toward specific mineral types, appearance alone isn’t reliable enough to determine composition. A smooth stone is most likely struvite, but it could also be urate, cystine, or calcium oxalate monohydrate. A rough, bumpy stone is probably calcium oxalate, but cystine stones can look similar. Many stones also contain a mix of minerals, with a core of one type and an outer shell of another.

This is why vets send removed stones to a lab for analysis. Knowing the exact composition changes the treatment and prevention plan entirely. Struvite stones can often be dissolved with a special diet, while calcium oxalate stones cannot and require physical removal. Getting the type wrong means the wrong prevention strategy, and stones that come back.

Signs Your Dog May Have Stones

You’re unlikely to see a bladder stone yourself unless your dog passes a small one in their urine (which can look like a tiny pebble or grain of sand on the ground). More often, the signs are behavioral. Dogs with bladder stones strain to urinate, urinate more frequently in small amounts, or produce urine tinged pink or red with blood. The stones irritate the bladder lining and can partially or fully block the flow of urine.

If a stone gets lodged in the urethra (the tube leading out of the bladder), symptoms escalate quickly. Your dog may vomit, become lethargic, or show signs of pain. A complete blockage is a veterinary emergency because the bladder can rupture if urine has no way out. Male dogs are more prone to blockages because their urethra is narrower and longer.

Breeds With Higher Risk

Some breeds are genetically predisposed to forming specific stone types. Dalmatians are famously prone to urate stones because of how their bodies process certain proteins. English Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and Rottweilers carry a higher risk for calcium oxalate stones due to an inherited genetic condition. Yorkshire Terriers, Cairn Terriers, and Jack Russell Terriers also show breed-level predisposition to calcium oxalate formation. Researchers at the University of Minnesota recommend genetic testing for Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Staffordshires, and Rottweilers if calcium oxalate stones are a concern.

Miniature Schnauzers, Shih Tzus, and Bichon Frises tend toward struvite stones, often linked to urinary tract infections that change the chemistry of the urine.

Treatment and Prevention

Struvite stones are the only common type that can be dissolved without surgery. A prescription diet that acidifies the urine and limits certain minerals can shrink these stones over several weeks, though progress needs to be monitored with regular imaging. If there’s an underlying urinary tract infection (which is common with struvite), that needs to be treated simultaneously with antibiotics.

Calcium oxalate, urate, and cystine stones generally require physical removal. This can mean traditional surgery, or in some cases, a less invasive procedure where stones are flushed out through a catheter or broken up with a laser. The approach depends on the stone size, number, and location.

Prevention after removal focuses on diet and urine chemistry. For calcium oxalate, cystine, and urate stones, the goal is keeping urine neutral to slightly alkaline. A fasting urine pH below 6.5 is considered too acidic, and your vet may recommend alkalinizing supplements to bring it up. Increased water intake is universally recommended because dilute urine makes it harder for minerals to clump together. Feeding wet food instead of dry kibble is one of the simplest ways to boost your dog’s daily water consumption.

Recurrence rates for bladder stones are high, particularly for calcium oxalate. Regular check-ups with urine testing and periodic imaging help catch new stones while they’re still small enough to manage easily.
