A widely observed technique is the creation of a “bait ball,” where a group of dolphins works together to tightly encircle and herd a school of fish. Bottlenose dolphins in shallow coastal areas have developed specialized, regional hunting traditions. One technique is “mud ringing,” where a dolphin swims in a tight circle near the seafloor, rapidly beating its tail to create a circular plume of mud that acts as a temporary net. Disoriented fish attempting to escape the mud ring often leap out of the water, where waiting dolphins catch them on the surface.

In some coastal regions, dolphins practice “strand feeding,” a high-risk behavior where they drive schools of fish onto a mud bank or beach. The dolphins temporarily and intentionally beach themselves to snatch the stranded fish before quickly sliding back into the water. This behavior is often passed down from mother to calf, indicating social learning and cultural transmission.

This wide-ranging diet for river species is an adaptation to the murky, low-visibility conditions of their freshwater environment.
