What Do Kangaroos Eat and How Do They Digest It?

The kangaroo, an iconic Australian marsupial, is a herbivore whose survival in harsh, low-resource environments relies on specialized eating habits and digestive adaptations. Their overwhelmingly plant-based diet presents a challenge due to the high fiber and low nutrient content of available vegetation. The macropod family, which includes kangaroos, wallabies, and wallaroos, is a diverse group, and their dietary preferences vary significantly based on species and habitat.

What Makes Up the Kangaroo’s Primary Diet

The diets of the largest and most common macropods, such as the Red Kangaroo and the Eastern Grey Kangaroo, are heavily dominated by grasses and herbaceous plants. These animals are classified primarily as grazers, meaning they subsist mainly on lower vegetation. The Eastern Grey Kangaroo, for example, shows a preference for young, green grasses, which are relatively more nutritious than older, drier growth.

The kangaroo’s dental structure is specifically adapted for this fibrous diet, featuring sharp incisors to crop grass close to the ground and large, flat molars for grinding. The silica content in grass is abrasive, which causes the molars to wear down over time, but kangaroos have a unique mechanism called polyphyodonty where new teeth continually grow in the back and move forward to replace the worn-out ones. When grasses are scarce, particularly during dry seasons or drought, the grazing kangaroos will supplement their diet by foraging for leaves from shrubs, forbs, and even fungi.

Unique Digestive System and Processing Food

Kangaroos possess a multi-chambered stomach that allows them to thrive on a high-fiber, low-nutrient diet through a process called foregut fermentation. Unlike true ruminants such as cows, the kangaroo stomach is divided into distinct sections, including the sacciform and tubiform forestomachs. The sacciform chamber acts as the main fermentation vat, housing specialized bacteria, fungi, and protozoa that break down the cellulose in plant cell walls.

This microbial digestion releases the cell contents and produces short-chain fatty acids, which the kangaroo absorbs as its main energy source. The efficiency of this process is enhanced by the ability to recycle nitrogenous waste, such as urea, from the bloodstream back into the forestomach, where the microbes use it to synthesize their own protein. The overall design of the digestive tract, which is more tubular than the large vat-like structure of ruminants, contributes to a highly efficient use of water, allowing kangaroos to extract moisture from the plants they eat and conserve water by producing concentrated urine.

Dietary Differences Across Species

While the large Red and Grey Kangaroos are predominantly grazers, the broader macropod family exhibits a spectrum of feeding behaviors based on their environment and specific adaptations. Macropods are generally categorized as grazers, browsers, or mixed feeders. Grazers, like the Eastern Grey Kangaroo, consume diets consisting mainly of grasses.

In contrast, browsers feed mainly on the leaves, soft shoots, and fruits of higher-growing, woody plants. Tree Kangaroos, for example, are distinct browsers, living in rainforest environments where their diet consists of leaves, fruit, and bark. Intermediate feeders, which include some wallabies and Rock Wallabies, possess a more flexible diet, consuming a mix of grasses, herbs, and roots depending on seasonal availability.
