What Do Most Labradoodles Die From? Top Causes

Cancer is the leading cause of death in Labradoodles, as it is for most medium-to-large dog breeds. Studies of elderly dog populations show that malignant tumors account for roughly 46% of deaths, followed by cardiovascular failure at about 17% and age-related decline at around 18%. Labradoodles typically live 12 to 15 years, with miniature Labradoodles often reaching the higher end of that range.

Cancer Is the Top Cause

Nearly half of deaths in aging dogs are linked to malignant tumors. Labradoodles inherit cancer risk from both parent breeds. Labrador Retrievers are prone to lymphoma and mast cell tumors, while Standard Poodles carry elevated rates of several cancer types. Because Labradoodles aren’t a standardized breed with a closed gene pool, their cancer rates vary widely depending on the individual dog’s genetics, but the overall pattern mirrors what veterinarians see across medium and large breeds.

The signs you’d notice depend on where the cancer develops. Lumps under the skin, unexplained weight loss, persistent lethargy, loss of appetite, or difficulty breathing can all point to an underlying tumor. Many cancers in dogs are treatable if caught early, particularly skin-based tumors that can be surgically removed. Others, like hemangiosarcoma (a blood vessel cancer common in larger breeds), can progress quickly and cause internal bleeding before symptoms become obvious.

Heart Disease

Cardiovascular failure is the second most common killer, responsible for about 17% of deaths in elderly dog populations. The most relevant heart conditions for Labradoodles are dilated cardiomyopathy and degenerative mitral valve disease.

Dilated cardiomyopathy causes the heart muscle to weaken and stretch, making it unable to pump blood effectively. It’s the second most common heart disease in dogs overall. Once a dog develops heart failure from this condition, survival is typically 2 to 12 months with medication. Some dogs die suddenly without any prior symptoms. Labradoodles may carry genetic susceptibility from their parent breeds, particularly if they have Standard Poodle lineage.

Mitral valve disease, the most common heart disease in dogs, causes one of the heart’s valves to deteriorate over time. It progresses gradually, and many dogs live for years after diagnosis with medication. Eventually, though, some dogs stop responding to treatment, and kidney failure can develop as a secondary complication.

Kidney Disease and Urinary Problems

Chronic kidney disease is the most frequent urinary condition found in aging dogs, making up over 72% of kidney-related findings in necropsy studies. The kidneys gradually lose their ability to filter waste from the blood, and the damage is irreversible. By the time symptoms appear, often increased thirst, weight loss, vomiting, and decreased appetite, significant kidney function has already been lost.

Urinary tract infections and inflammation also contribute to mortality in older dogs, accounting for nearly 58% of the inflammatory conditions linked to death. These infections can become serious when they spread to the kidneys or when a dog’s immune system is already compromised by age.

Age-Related Decline

About 18% of elderly dog deaths are attributed simply to old age, and in most of those cases, the dog was euthanized at the owner’s request due to declining quality of life. The symptoms that lead to this decision are familiar to anyone who has lived with a senior dog: blindness, deafness, incontinence, disorientation, loss of interest in socializing, and difficulty walking. Neurological and musculoskeletal deterioration are the primary drivers, and they tend to compound each other. A dog that can no longer see or hear well becomes disoriented, and a dog with arthritis or spinal degeneration loses the ability to move comfortably.

For Labradoodles, hip and elbow dysplasia inherited from the Labrador side can accelerate mobility problems in old age. Joint supplements, weight management, and moderate exercise throughout life can delay these issues, but they rarely prevent them entirely in predisposed dogs.

Addison’s Disease

One condition worth knowing about for Labradoodle owners is Addison’s disease, an adrenal gland disorder where the body stops producing enough of certain hormones. Standard Poodles are one of the breeds with the highest risk, with occurrence rates reported as high as 10% in some study populations. That genetic predisposition can pass to Labradoodle offspring.

Dogs with Addison’s disease have a risk of death roughly 1.9 times higher than the general dog population if the condition goes undiagnosed. The symptoms, which include vomiting, lethargy, weakness, and collapse, can mimic many other illnesses, making it tricky to identify. The good news is that once diagnosed and treated with hormone replacement, the prognosis is generally excellent. The danger lies primarily in the initial crisis before anyone knows what’s wrong.

How Size Affects Risk

Standard Labradoodles weigh 50 to 75 pounds and stand about 25 inches tall. Miniature Labradoodles, bred from Miniature Poodles, weigh around 30 pounds and stand 16 to 20 inches. This size difference matters for lifespan and disease risk. Smaller dogs tend to live longer and are less prone to certain cancers and joint problems. They’re more likely to develop mitral valve disease, while larger dogs face higher rates of dilated cardiomyopathy and bone cancers.

If your Labradoodle is on the larger side, paying attention to joint health, maintaining a lean body weight, and staying alert to any new lumps or behavioral changes becomes especially important as they move past age 8 or 9. For miniature Labradoodles, heart murmurs detected during routine vet visits deserve follow-up, as they can be an early sign of valve disease.
