What Do Stink Bugs Do to Humans: Bites, Spray & Skin

Stink bugs are not dangerous to humans. They don’t transmit diseases, they don’t infest your body, and they rarely bite. What they can do is spray a foul-smelling defensive chemical that irritates skin and eyes on contact. For most people, stink bugs are a household nuisance, not a health threat.

Can Stink Bugs Bite?

Stink bugs have piercing mouthparts designed to feed on plant tissue, and they can technically bite if startled or handled roughly. In practice, this almost never happens. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states plainly that brown marmorated stink bugs “do not bite people or pets and are not known to transmit disease or cause physical harm.” If a stink bug does pierce your skin, it feels like a minor pinprick and doesn’t inject venom or transmit pathogens.

The Defensive Spray and What It Does to Skin

The real issue with stink bugs is their chemical defense. When threatened, a stink bug releases a liquid from glands on its abdomen. This secretion contains two reactive aldehyde compounds that are responsible for both the notorious smell and any skin irritation you might experience.

If the fluid lands on your skin, it can cause irritant contact dermatitis. Symptoms include redness, swelling, a burning sensation, and occasionally small blisters. One documented case involved a red-orange discoloration on a person’s arm and armpit area after contact with a brown marmorated stink bug. These reactions are localized to the spot where the chemical touched your skin and typically resolve on their own.

The chemicals in the spray are reactive enough to bond with proteins in your outer skin cells. This is why stepping on a stink bug barefoot (or crushing one against your skin) can leave an orange or brownish stain that won’t wipe off with alcohol or water alone. Testing has shown these pigmented spots appear within five minutes of contact and disappear completely within about two weeks as your skin naturally sheds those outer cells.

Eye and Respiratory Irritation

Getting stink bug secretion in your eyes is more concerning than skin contact. The same aldehyde compounds that irritate skin can cause irritant contact keratitis, a painful inflammation of the cornea. This has been documented in medical literature, with at least one published case involving direct exposure from a startled stink bug. If the spray reaches your eyes, flush them immediately with clean water for several minutes.

People who deal with large indoor infestations sometimes report mild respiratory irritation from the accumulated odor compounds in enclosed spaces. This is more common in fall and winter, when stink bugs seek warmth inside homes and can gather in large numbers in attics, wall voids, and living areas.

Allergic Reactions

Some people are more sensitive to stink bug secretions than others. An allergic response can include more pronounced skin inflammation, nasal congestion, or irritated airways beyond what the chemical irritation alone would cause. If you notice symptoms like a runny nose, sneezing, or worsening skin reactions after handling stink bugs or being in a heavily infested room, you may have a sensitivity to their defensive compounds.

How to Clean the Smell and Irritation Off Skin

If stink bug fluid gets on your skin, wash the area thoroughly with soap and water as soon as possible. This removes residual chemical before it has time to bond more deeply with your skin cells. For the lingering smell on skin, surfaces, or clothing, a diluted vinegar-and-water solution works well as a neutralizer. Baking soda and commercial odor-neutralizing products can also help.

The orange or brown staining from crushed stink bugs is harder to deal with because the aldehydes chemically bond to your skin’s outer layer. No solvent will remove it instantly. The stain fades as your skin naturally turns over, which takes one to two weeks. On fabrics and hard surfaces, prompt cleaning with an enzymatic cleaner or vinegar solution gives the best results.

Why They End Up in Your Home

Stink bugs don’t enter homes to feed on you, your food, or your furniture. They’re agricultural pests that feed on fruit, vegetables, and ornamental plants. When temperatures drop in fall, they seek sheltered spots to overwinter, and your warm house fits the bill perfectly. They squeeze through cracks around windows, doors, siding, and utility pipes. Once inside, they’re sluggish and largely inactive until warmer weather returns.

The brown marmorated stink bug, the species most commonly found indoors in the United States, can congregate in groups of hundreds or even thousands in a single structure. While this is deeply unpleasant, it poses no structural risk. They don’t chew wood, damage wiring, or contaminate food supplies. The main consequences are the smell (especially if you vacuum or crush them, triggering their defensive release) and the general discomfort of sharing your living space with a large number of insects.

Sealing entry points before fall, particularly gaps around window frames, door sweeps, and exterior vents, is the most effective way to keep them out. If they’re already inside, gentle removal with a tissue or a dedicated vacuum (the smell will linger in your vacuum) is preferable to crushing them, which releases the full dose of their defensive chemicals into your home.
