What Do Ticks Do to Humans: Bites, Diseases & Risks

Ticks feed on human blood, and in the process they can transmit bacteria, viruses, and parasites that cause serious illness. But even before disease enters the picture, a tick bite sets off a sophisticated biological interaction between the tick’s saliva and your body. Here’s what actually happens, from the moment a tick latches on to the long-term effects some people experience.

How Ticks Feed Without You Noticing

Ticks don’t just bite and start drinking. They insert their mouthparts into your skin and secrete a complex cocktail of saliva that effectively numbs the surrounding area, which is why most people never feel a tick attach. That saliva also prevents your blood from clotting at the bite site, dilates nearby blood vessels to increase blood flow, and suppresses your local immune response so your body doesn’t mount a defense that would dislodge the tick.

This mixture contains dozens of protein families, including enzymes that break down tissue, molecules that block wound healing, and compounds that disarm immune cells arriving at the scene. A tick can feed for days, slowly engorging itself, all while you remain completely unaware. That’s what makes ticks more dangerous than most biting insects: the longer they stay attached, the greater the chance they transmit something harmful.

The Bite Site Itself

Right after a tick attaches (or is removed), you’ll typically see a small red bump similar to a mosquito bite. This is a normal skin irritation that usually fades within one to two days and doesn’t indicate disease.

What you should watch for is a rash that appears three to 30 days later, with an average onset around seven days. This expanding rash, called erythema migrans, is the hallmark early sign of Lyme disease. It grows gradually over several days and can reach 12 inches or more across. It may feel warm but is rarely itchy or painful. Sometimes the center clears as it expands, creating the well-known “bull’s-eye” pattern, though not every Lyme rash looks like that. Over 70% of people who develop Lyme disease get this rash, meaning roughly a quarter to a third never see it at all.

Diseases Ticks Transmit

Ticks are vectors for more than a dozen pathogens in the United States alone. The most common is Lyme disease, caused by a type of bacteria carried primarily by blacklegged ticks. Other infections include anaplasmosis, babesiosis (a parasitic infection of red blood cells), ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and Powassan virus disease. All of these are rising. In New York State alone, Lyme disease incidence jumped from 37.2 to 164.8 cases per 100,000 residents between 2020 and 2024. Anaplasmosis nearly doubled over that same period.

Not every tick carries a pathogen, and not every bite from an infected tick leads to illness. Timing matters enormously. For Lyme disease, the tick generally needs to be attached for more than 24 hours before the bacteria can transfer into your bloodstream. Removing a tick within that first day dramatically reduces your risk. Some pathogens transmit faster, though. Powassan virus can potentially transfer in under an hour, which is one reason it’s especially concerning despite being rare.

Coinfections From a Single Bite

A single tick can carry more than one pathogen at the same time, which means one bite can potentially give you two infections at once. In a study of 52 patients with early Lyme disease, about 8% also showed evidence of babesiosis. That said, nearly 90% of Lyme patients in the study had no coinfection, so this is the exception rather than the rule. Coinfections can complicate diagnosis because symptoms overlap and may be more severe than either infection alone.

What Untreated Lyme Disease Does to Your Body

If Lyme disease isn’t caught early, the bacteria can spread beyond the bite site and affect multiple organ systems. Early symptoms often include fever, chills, fatigue, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes. Left untreated, the infection can progress to cause severe headaches and neck stiffness, heart palpitations or irregular heartbeat (a condition called Lyme carditis), episodes of dizziness or shortness of breath, and inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.

Even after successful antibiotic treatment, some people experience lingering symptoms. Fatigue, body aches, and difficulty thinking can persist for months. Studies have found that six months after treatment, these symptoms are 5 to 10% more common in people who’ve had Lyme disease compared to those who haven’t. This condition, called Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome, has no known cause and no established cure beyond time.

Tick Paralysis

Some tick species produce a neurotoxin in their saliva that can cause a condition called tick paralysis. This isn’t an infection. It’s a direct toxic effect. The toxin doesn’t appear early in feeding, so paralysis only develops after a tick has been attached for several days. Symptoms start with weakness and poor coordination, then progress to ascending paralysis that moves upward through the body. In severe cases, it can affect breathing. The good news: once the tick is found and removed, most people recover completely. The bad news: because the tick has often been feeding unnoticed in hair or skin folds, it can be difficult to identify as the cause.

Red Meat Allergy From Tick Bites

One of the more unusual things ticks do to humans is trigger alpha-gal syndrome, an allergic reaction to red meat and other mammal-derived products. Here’s how it works: most mammals naturally produce a sugar molecule called alpha-gal, but humans don’t. Some ticks carry alpha-gal in their saliva, and when they bite you, they inject it into your bloodstream. Your immune system recognizes this foreign molecule and builds antibodies against it. The next time you eat beef, pork, lamb, or other mammal meat containing alpha-gal, your immune system reacts, sometimes severely.

Alpha-gal syndrome is unusual among food allergies because the reaction is often delayed, occurring three to six hours after eating, which makes it harder to connect to the meal that caused it. Symptoms range from hives and stomach problems to full anaphylaxis. The allergy can fade over time if you avoid further tick bites, but additional bites can reinforce or worsen it.

How to Remove a Tick Safely

If you find a tick on your body, speed matters more than technique perfection. Use clean, fine-tipped tweezers and grasp the tick as close to your skin’s surface as possible. Pull straight upward with steady, even pressure. Don’t twist or jerk, which can snap the mouthparts off in your skin. If that does happen, your body will naturally push the remnants out as the skin heals, or you can try to remove them with tweezers. If they don’t come out easily, leave them alone.

After removal, clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water, rubbing alcohol, or hand sanitizer. Do not use petroleum jelly, nail polish, heat, or other home remedies to try to make a tick “back out.” These methods can agitate the tick and cause it to regurgitate infected fluid into your skin, increasing your risk of infection rather than reducing it. Don’t crush the tick with your fingers either. Flush it down the toilet, seal it in tape, or place it in alcohol if you want to save it for identification.
