What Do Toothpaste Colors Mean? The Myth, Debunked

The colored squares on toothpaste tubes have nothing to do with the ingredients inside. They’re manufacturing marks, not secret codes. This is one of the most persistent myths in consumer health, and it’s completely false. Here’s what’s actually going on, and how to genuinely evaluate your toothpaste.

What the Colored Squares Actually Are

The small colored rectangles printed on the sealed end of toothpaste tubes are called “eye marks” or “color marks.” Light beam sensors on the manufacturing line read these marks to tell machines exactly where to cut, fold, and seal the packaging. That’s it. The color of the mark depends on the packaging design and the type of sensor being used, not on what’s inside the tube.

A green square doesn’t mean “all natural.” A black square doesn’t mean “all chemicals.” A red or blue square doesn’t indicate some mix of the two. Different colors are used on different types of packaging or with different machines. You’ll find the same marks on tubes of hand cream, ointment, and other products that come in squeezable tubes. All the colors mean exactly the same thing: “cut here.”

Where the Myth Came From

The rumor spread widely on social media, typically claiming a simple color code: green means the toothpaste is “all natural,” blue means “natural plus medicine,” red means “natural plus chemicals,” and black means “all chemicals.” It sounds tidy enough to be believable, and it plays on real concerns people have about synthetic ingredients. But no regulatory agency, dental organization, or manufacturer has ever used this system. It was invented online and repeated until it felt true.

One reason the myth stuck is that it offers a shortcut. Reading an ingredient list takes effort. Glancing at a colored square takes a second. But that shortcut doesn’t exist, and relying on it could lead you to dismiss a perfectly good toothpaste or trust one that doesn’t meet your needs.

How to Actually Read a Toothpaste Label

In the United States, toothpaste with fluoride is regulated as an over-the-counter drug. That means every tube is required to carry a Drug Facts panel, just like cold medicine or pain relievers. This panel lists the active ingredient (the type and concentration of fluoride), the product’s purpose, directions for use, and warnings. It’s the most reliable information on the package.

Behind the active ingredient, you’ll find a longer list of inactive ingredients. These do the behind-the-scenes work of making the paste feel, taste, and behave the way you expect:

  • Abrasives like calcium carbonate and silica act as gentle scrubbers that help remove plaque and food particles from teeth.
  • Thickening agents like cellulose gum and xanthan gum give toothpaste its consistency and help it stay on the brush.
  • Surfactants like sodium lauryl sulfate create the foaming action that spreads toothpaste around your mouth. If you have sensitive gums or get frequent canker sores, look for a formula with low or no sodium lauryl sulfate.
  • Humectants like glycerol retain moisture so the paste doesn’t dry out in the tube.

None of these categories are indicated by the color of a square on the packaging. They’re spelled out in plain text on the box or tube.

What the ADA Seal Tells You

If you want a genuine shortcut for evaluating toothpaste, look for the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance. To earn the seal, a toothpaste must pass testing for total fluoride content, heavy metals, pH, abrasivity, microbial safety, and stability. At least 90% of the labeled fluoride must remain available in both fresh and aged samples, and at least 80% of that fluoride must be released within one minute of contact. Products with new ingredients not on established safety lists require additional clinical trials, including soft tissue exams and toxicological studies.

The seal isn’t mandatory. Plenty of safe toothpastes don’t carry it because manufacturers choose not to go through the review process. But when you see it, you know the product has met an independent standard beyond the FDA’s baseline requirements.

Abrasivity: The Number That Actually Matters

One thing no colored square will ever tell you is how abrasive your toothpaste is. The Relative Dentin Abrasivity (RDA) scale, developed by the ADA and governmental agencies, assigns each toothpaste a numerical score based on how much it wears down tooth material. Any toothpaste with an RDA of 250 or below is considered safe and effective. Clinical evidence shows that lifelong use at or below that threshold produces virtually no wear to enamel.

Most everyday toothpastes fall well under 250. Whitening toothpastes tend to score higher because they use more aggressive abrasives to remove surface stains. If you have sensitive teeth, receding gums, or exposed root surfaces, choosing a lower-abrasivity formula is more meaningful than anything a colored rectangle could tell you. RDA values aren’t always printed on the package, but many manufacturers publish them on their websites or will share them if you call.

Fluoride Concentration by Age

Standard toothpaste contains between 850 and 1,150 parts per million of fluoride and is labeled for adults and children two and older. Higher-strength formulas at 1,500 ppm are available but are not recommended for children under six unless directed by a dentist. For children under two, the guidance is to consult a dentist before using any fluoride toothpaste at all.

For young kids who do use fluoride toothpaste, the key concern is swallowing. Packaging is required to carry a warning to keep fluoride toothpaste out of reach of children under six and to seek medical help if more than the amount used for brushing is accidentally swallowed. Supervising brushing and using a rice-grain-sized smear for toddlers reduces that risk significantly.
